We went LS2 and S4 in our Gen 5. We just got back from St. Anthony's last night. While there we duned with the owner of the car built right after ours. A purple Gen 5 with LS1 and 2D. He was telling us he had already had to replace the reverse in his 2D. We picked up ours in January and his after that.
So we had the same Gen 5 chassis but the cars differed on the drive train, the 934's, 17" tires and the radios. We we duning with four seats filled and his with two. We figured we were a minimum of 600 lbs heavier than his car. We duned the same hills, following each other. The 100 hp difference between the cars was still evident. We were able to motor around in third gear almost everywhere and he was having to shift from second to third on some of the same spots. Not a big difference but still some.

I would do the bigger trans without question. Scrimp on another area to get the trans and 934's if ya have to. The engine choice is less important. I think it's a matter of time before you want more hp. Get into the car with what you can budget on the engine size and go from there.
I have had the LS2 for 8 months and it's just fine, although I'm secretly eyeing that CBM 415 with 600 hp. I don't need more hp but I would use it if I had it. tongue.gif

Trucker18 wheels, I would like to say that yes I want to keep the car forever, however I know that may not happen.. I would like to keep the car for quite some time, so that's why the wife and I are leaning more toward the LS2 with S4.. I have three boys: ages 10, 6, 2 I know they will only get bigger and I want a car that I don't have to sell to get more HP and torque from in two years.. I like the idae of a Fortin Tranny, however I am stretching to make it into a LS2 with S4, so the Fortin at a couple grand extra won't work.. Whew, I can't wait to be duning.. Thanks for the suggestions, I guess I had better call Grant again.. Poor Guy!! Thanks again!

Call Fortin and ask if they have any used ones. There was a thread in which geardoc posted a used one for $10,500 ( it had been freshened up I beleive) and they seem to have them from time to time.
In my opinion a used Fortin is better than a new S4.

Like everyone else is saying, don't get the 2d if you can afford it. I was gonna use the S4 when I built my car but I stepped up to the Albins after reading a bunch of horror stories with the S4. The idea of a $11,000.00 roll of the dice didn't appeal to me. That being said, my car is alot heavier than yours and I do alot of hardpack heavy whoop type stuff which is harder on them. The used $10.5k Fortins are H patterns. The new sequential Fortins are about $20k. My guess is the S4 will be plenty of trans for you.
