Robbie,

I know a reputable contractor who does this type of work. He has handled all of my security system designs and installs for many million dollar plus homes I've built.

He's not on the board but worth talking to at the very least.

PM me if interested and I'll forward his contact info.

I sell and install these types of security systems. I can not travel to Cali to do the work, but would be willing try and save you some dough by selling you the equipment at my cost, and believe the markup on this stuff is stupid.

Just for grins I had a vendor quote a 4 color cam system, DVR, with Internet, and monitor, the installation was about 6-7hrs of work, and the hard cost on the equipment was $1350.00, the bidded $3800.00, so they were really marking up the stuff heavily, and probably charging me me $150.00/hr for the labor.

If you want me to let you know what the equipment should cost, let me know...and I will give you some honest real numbers...

When I sell a complete system to client, I typically charge a 15-20% margin, and $75/hr labor, plus travel costs if more than 20 miles from my office.

One of our dune group does this stuff for a living...not sure if he'll come out that far but may be worth calling him and mentioning that I told you about him:

http://jordanalarm.com/

He just bought a bunch of gently used DVR's from one of the local casinos, got 4 pallets of them for about what 1 unit sells for new from what I understand. He gave one to me to play with...nice high end Sanyo with IP and everything...but it's $600 for the software to connect to it icon_sad.gif Works fine stand alone but being a computer guy it's bugging the snot out of me that I can't get into the IP interface icon_biggrin.gif

We have been in Southern California for over 24 years. I am getting great pricing on top quality equipment and would be more than happy to share those discounts with everyone on GD.com. Just let me know what you need and I can send you pricing. We have systems all over including some areas of Arizona.

We can take over any security system. We monitor our own alarm signals and you will NEVER reach a voicemail or answering machine. We are a different kind of company and actually care about our customers.

There is a huge difference in different equipment. For example my cost on a good LCD flat panel with BNC inputs and less than 10ms response rate is $600. A computer monitor is different than a security monitor (about 20,000 run time hours). Is the monitor quoted a CRT? Are the cameras 380 lines or 520 lines because that makes a difference too (box cameras, bullets, IR)? Is the DVR MPEG4 with DDNS or does it require a static IP? When comparing camera systems I highly recommend comparing apples to apples... I could install cheap stuff to undercut everyone else but you won't be happy.

The biggest difference is do you want a HACK install? Do you want wires hanging on the outside of your house like the phone, cable, satellite, and Hack alarm companies install?

Personally, I can't stand the sight of wire. But that may be just me. I have lost a few jobs only to see the world's worst installation. Sure I could have had my techs drape wire across the ceiling but I wouldn't be able to sleep at night...

I would be more than proud to show anyone any one of my company's 6,000 custom installations over the last 24 years... Just a thought.

Trust me - apples to apples in equipment and reputation for installation. That combination = All Protection Alarm every time.

I agree with the above statements. Your are going to pay more for good equiptment, but it is worth it in the long run. Sounds like desertguy and I have the same feelings about installations (don't you just love the DirecTv/ Dish monkeys work?).

What do you charge for the conversion??? Whats you monthly rate.

No one has beat my monthly price for monitoring and we to monitor our own accounts.

Just curious......

Glad to see there are other people in our industry that are on the board to help, not take advantage people.
My main business in Audio/Video. I do Theater rooms, whole house music, home automation.

Where are you based out of?

The conversion really depends on what we are taking over. If the panel is locked out we'll charge for a new board and keypad(s). If the panel is not locked out then we'll just reprogram the control for free. We'll explain the difference of the 4ah battery that everyone else uses and why they should change it to a 7 ah battery ($20 since we are already there). My company has never purchased a 4 ah battery. In our experience sealed lead acid batteries have a 4 to 5 year life.

Monthly monitoring is $25 or you can get one month free if you pay 1 year in advance ($275). All of our systems test on a DAILY basis and we check to make sure we received that test signal. I can't tell you how many people have FC on their keypad and don't know they are not being monitored with the National Companies (ADT, Brinks, and so on)... Once they are burglarized I guess they will figure it out.

You have your own central station? Do your systems self-test every 24 hours? That gets expensive if you are paying a monitoring company to monitor your accounts...
