So I have a custom 2 1/2 receiver on my motor home and find it hard to find a hitch pin that easily goes through with enough room to put my clip on. Do you think a 5/8 grade 8 bolt is Stronger, weaker, wrong material or would it be just fine?

P.S. I thought this section would generate more hits/interest than the RV section

shear strength on a 5/8" grade 8 is probably pretty high.

Did you try camping world down the street from you, I picked one up there, look for the hitch lock with a bend on the end of it...
It was a couple of years ago....

Thanks Robbie, that's great info, I was planning on buying a 5" grade 8 bolt and cut the threads off, tapper the end and drill a small hole through it for a small lock, even if the bolt isn't "tightened" on the hitch it sounds like it's 3 times stronger than a standard hitch pin. By having a longer bolt/pin I can also weld some small 5/8" id. boss material on both sides of my receiver. I'm noticing a little deformation on these holes pulling a heavy stacker!

They're all borderline for the length, I've also seen a lot of the 1/2 with a 5/8" sleeve version too, that just sound way too weak

Been running grade 8 bolts for years on hitches and never had a problem. Some pretty heavy loads too- you'll be fine.

The one I got there was solid steel, with a hitch lock on the side, and fit perfectly....

I have one of those on my truck and my foreman always talks chit because their a little smaller and they tend to oval the hole once you have a trailer weight swaying on them wife.gif

I found the draw tight 5/8'ths pin has a sheer strength of 30,000 pounds
