Well I kept hearing about catching the bug, and its finally happened to me, I am going out to get my second 70 this weekend. Although I do not post that much, I do read about every forum topic on here. You all have laid the ground work for someone who is not used to working on motors or atc's. Before I make the drive this weekend (100 miles each way), I wanted to get everyones thoughts, and make sure that I am not being taken to the cleaners. I will post the original add below, but wanted to let you know that I was able to talk him down from $250 to $175.

Original Add "I have a 1983 Honda 70,3 wheeler-4 speed automatic. This thing is in really good shape. All the plastic is good none broken. It does need a front tire and one of my grandkids broke the pull rope, but it will bump start. It runs great lots of power. This thing wasn"t rode must until this year, as you can see by the pics. I am asking $250.00 firm."

From reading the forums, I can easily tell that the frame is bent, and will need to be bent back in place, and will need a new front fender. The rear grab bar is missing, and the obivois from the listing that I will need a new front tire and to rebuild the pull start. I know that it tells you how to do this in the manual, so hopefully I will be able to follow some directions for once.

After I spoke with him on the phone, he told me that it hasn't been started in about a month, and he can no longer push start it b/c of the front tire. Does anyone think that it would be worth taking the pull start off my 85 and installing it on the 83 before I make the purchase? Or anouther idea is to bring along my small air compressor and try to put some air in the front tire to be able to push start it.......or am I just really paranoid???

Anyway, just thought I would share and would love some feed back.

Thanks from Kentucky!

I thought that I would show everyone what my second 70 has come to look like. After tearing it apart, sand blasting, painting, new head, piston & rings, plug wire, carb rebild kit, condensor, points, new tire, oh yeah and a completely new/used frame off ebay, she is done. I had 85' stickers laying around, so even though its truly an 83' i used them.

But, now isn't there always a but.....I am having a little trouble. I can go out to the garage after several days, and she will start right up without even using the choke, idles great, run good at first. When I say first, here is what I mean. She will run through all gears without a problem, but she does't have too much top end power. Its the same way with every gear, she starts out great, but it seems like there is something limiting her from reving up. I am not sure if this is a points problem, coil problem, or a stator problem or even a carb problem of not getting enough gas... I am hoping that you 70 GODS out there can help me out. Hopefuly I described my problem good enough, if not, please let me know.

Check your points setting.
Do you have fuel filters in place?
Check the screen behind the fuel valve on carb.

If those check out.
check compression ( 140-170psi)
adjust the valves

Can't get hurt for $175 take your other pull starter

I set the points using the top dead center method since they were brand new, so I will have to come up with a timing light, I do have the diagram off here on how to make one. I am using brand new fuel lines and filters, but will have to recheck the screen on the fuel valve. I will also have to recheck the valves, I did adjust them when we put the head on, but I will recheck them and let you know.

I am rather new, so what is the correct way to check the compression? I will check the manual for that too. Thanks a lot for responding!
