Glamis Chick
This weekend the kids and i went out into the smaller dunes for a little follow the leader. We came across a mound of sand about 3 feet high with a large bush in the middle. When we got close you could see fox tracks leading in a few different directions. The kids looked all around to see if they could see the den but the bush was to thick. That was the first time they had ever seen tracks out in the dunes. Now they can't wait to go out again and find some new tracks!

Right on, that's cool. Great to teach the kids about that stuff.

Go south by wash 15 or so and then inward a bit you'll see many tracks. Lot's of holes in the sand mounds also. We saw about 7 quail type birds that ran on the ground, never flew. Allways see some interesting stuff down that way.

looked like a quail type bird to me, was about same size as one and had the little head dress thing with a swirl sticking straight up on it's head. Was all dark grey in color.

We caught some quail out near gecko when we were kids. My folks made us take them back though. Haven't seen any since. Been about 18 years ago or so.

I searched the web for info about Quails in the desert and they do exist. Call Desert Quails or more commonly called Gambel's Quails for the guy who saw them first in the early 1800's. Here is a picture of the bird and a link to a web site with more info about them if anyones interested. Pretty cool there was around 7 or so in the group of them we saw.

Desert USA info about desert animals.

Looney Duner
St Patricks day weekend this year, we had a baby sidewinder cruisin thru camp, we picked up the little sucker and relocated him to other side of the tracks at wash 11, alot less traffic on the other side. icon_wink.gif
