i have been trying to think about it too robbie...all i can guess is he released the hitch with the trailer wheels not blocked? or didnt put the pins all the way thru the landing gear legs? ??? or maybe left the truck in nuetral to unhitch and it rolled forward and the legs werent down properly????

There is no substitution for... PAYING ATTENTION!!!

We had a team in Colorado that had to move the front box to the rear(doubles). Apparently they had no communication because he lost an ear among other things. I am very thankful my co-driver was very cautious. Be careful and slow down.

One thing people forget is that a trailers wheels are not locked like a parking brake of a TV.

The trailer probably slid backwards when the hitch released the pin.

I sometimes forget to block the trailer's wheels.

I parked on a slight hill out at Johnson Valley one year and did not block the travel trailer tires. The thing rolled backwards when I unhitched, right off the wood block the front jack was on. It rolled down the hill and did not stop until the front jack dug into the ground. Thankfully I did not have that little landing skid on the jack so it could dig in. It was scary, and made no noise. Just rolling death. Luckily no one was in the way. I never made that mistake again.

Man crushed to death between truck and RV

By The Canadian Press

Published: August 07, 2008 3:18 AM CAMROSE — A 62-year-old American man has died after he was crushed between a fifth-wheel trailer and his truck at a recreational vehicle centre in Alberta.

Richard McBee was delivering the trailer last Thursday to Tee Pee Trade & RV Centre for Rad Transport based out of Elkhart, Indiana.

As he disconnected the fifth wheel from his vehicle, either the truck or trailer shifted and he was crushed between them, say Camrose police.

“The fifth wheel came down and pinned him between the trailer and the box of the truck,” said Insp. Lee Foreman.

McBee, who police say was from Indiana, was transported to St. Mary’s hospital in Camrose, but was later taken to Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra hospital by STARS air ambulance with a skull fracture.

He died in hospital Sunday.

Employees at local RV outlets say it’s very rare to become pinned between a fifth wheel and truck because of the safety equipment in place.

“It’s pretty difficult,” said one worker, who didn’t want to be named.

“I’ve heard of people crushing fingers between the fifth wheel and the box ... The only thing I can think of is if he unhooked the jacks (that support the trailer.)”

I have heard of similair accidents.

In the instance, I reference the pin did not go in correctly and was sitting on the plate. While the unlucky person was underneath the front of the 5er the pin settled off the plate and in. Only moved a few inches, but that kind of weight moving swiftly coming down straight on your head was/is enough to break a neck.

Bottom line - be careful!

Good reminder.

Unfortunately, these stories keep me scared a little - which is a good thing - Keeps me sharp.

I need to block my tires - not in my regular habit as I usually park on level areas - still a good habit though.

I always check the teeth on my hitch to make sure they are closed before I pull away. I've been thinking about adding a light or something as I always have to get my flashlight out for checking things.

Bummer about Dude though.
