Full Version: Looking For A Great Guard Dog

Hey all I have always been a dog person I am stumped on this one. May be you AZ folks could chime in. In a few months we are opening a tow / impound yard in Blythe, ca and I am in need of a Guard dog that will be able to cope with the extreme heat. Of course there will be shade / water for the dog but even in the shade it gets hella hot in the middle of the day. I tend to like more intelligent dogs if you think this animal will be just a dump lump that hides in the corner it’s not for Me., then again large hyper dogs are no fun either.

Thats the first breed that came to mind when I read it. Way loyal, smart dogs. Most people dont know this but a Doberman was a cross between a Rott and a German Shorthair Pointer.

That MALINOIS looks like a really cool dog. I think the BP agent that lives next to us in Blythe and does drug enforcement has one of those.

i dont think u will find a more loyal dog then a German Shepard. they very quickly know what is theres. and also pick up very good other peoples vibs. my last one was deaf and she would always know how i felt with someone around. she had put people in the corner if she felt i was threatened and was at the time. other times was someone selling me something door to door and as soon as i would say know she would go off on them to the point of running from my door as fast as they could and her jumping so high she would about hit her head on the ceiling. well yea she was over 14 years old then even and had hip problems. icon_sad.gif

but i can see the same things in my puppy that i have now. both great with kids. and totally guard there family.

but also if u go some place and a big German Sheppard is barking at u are u going to go up and pet it?

oh and Orange R dont answer that lol.

I have seen acouple belgian malinois' in action. Dog training at work. They are very powerful, strong dogs. When trained properly, they kick ass.
UTV Mayhem
a malinois is a belgian shephard, very close to the german shephard, great dog too!

Yea thanks, The dog thing is a touchy subject with most insurance companies but there are a few that will allow them with professional training and certain safe guards in place.

Rotty's are of course my favorite, but they can be pretty hyper. Mine jumps to look over the top of our 6 ft fence to bark and growl at our neighbor. She only lets him get so close to our fence. She is still young, but at just under 100 pounds for a puppy, we don't worry about anything in our back yard. German Shepards are great, but there are a lot of health concerns. Belgian Malinois are great dogs. Very trainable and very docile when not alerted to something. I suggest going to a guard dog training facility and talk to a trainer and tell them the specifics of what you are looking for. Like where the dog will be housed during operating hours etc. Good luck!! tongue.gif
MadCow
For the most part I have ruled out rottys being as they seem to be a bit excitable and hyper. I love the breeds that are "thinkers" you can see them accessing the situation and acting accordingly. Here is a picture of Montrose he is full bred Akitta and is the most wonderful guard dog you could ever ask for. It seems his only mission in life is to follow around my 3 year old and watch her back. I would love nothing more than another akitta but they don’t fair well in the heat.

Fastlane has a awesome guard dog, cant remember what kind though, I will show her this topic
sha
Fastlane's guard dog was an Australian Shepard. He was expertly trained. Wonderful dogs, great disposition, quick learners. Not very heat tolerant though, and unlike most people think, shaving them is very harmful to them.
spencerbuggy
German Shepard all the way .
sndrashouch
My neighbor here in vegas is the sgt. on the Las Vegas Metro K-9 force. His dog is a full bred pit and works nights only. Dog is outside in pen (understand this is regulation) at his house during the day. He has shade and a mister system installed over the dogs pen. Dog is amazing. Two of the guys that work under him have german shepards and are handled at their homes the same way.
Hotter than hell here in Vegas in the summer.

MALINOIS... Quik, very smart, the heart of a lion in a 70lb package!!
When i helped my girl train, One could take me down at a half run... I'm 5'10" 300#!
They look like a runt german shepard.
Fastlane
German Sheppard or an Aussie. Aussie's are my favorite. They get the job done but are extremely loyal to they're masters.
Chiquita
my vote is for the german shephard....I'm partial to them...super loyal and extremely smart

My australian shepherds are great guard dogs...... I agree they dont like the heat... Very quick learners....
MadCow
Well lots of heat is the factor here , If it wasnt for that, imo Akitas are the best gaurd dog hands down.
OG Got_Sand
I like akita's too.. I know a few people with them..... I just think they have a loose string.... tempermental...Im sure its all about the owner/trainer... Kinda scary for a business but good to keep the thiefs away...

My good friend had an akita and i knew it since it was a pup... as the yrs went by he started getting temermental and last yr attacked one of her friends.... months later it attacked me and none of us have any clue what was going on in its head and why it would just turn like that especially towards people it knew from a pup. I hate to stereotype them but I wouldnt trust an akita again.
MadCow
Well here’s the deal with Akitas that all owners should know. They are Very loyal to the family and only the family. As far as any dog thinks you -the owner and family- are part of their pack, and every pack has a leader this is where the whole "one owner dog thing comes in" With Akitas when you come over and are greeted with kindness the packs non verbal English tells the dog you are accepted as a friend and they will leave you be. The difference with Akitas is the next time you come over you assume that you and the Akita are cool now but that’s not the case. They know you’re not part of the pack and need reassurance that you’re Ok once again. If not the dog will be on alert the whole time your there. This is how friends and family members that do not live at the house get bit.
Bansh88
Pit Bull strikes fear into a lot of people just from their looks. They make excellent compainions as well. Usually have a deep bark which is good for alerts. Very fast runners. Their short hair and available light colors would do good in the heat. Very few genetic problems to show up in the later years.

Whatever you get, make sure they get some love and attention and not just left out in the yard.

Amen to that.............
MadCow
As far as I am concerned my dogs are part of the family, and no one gets “just left out in the yard"
yamabogger
a pit would be a great dog. my friend has 2 and they are great.. good around his baby and everything. and he guards his house.. they will defend u till the death.. they are are beasts but loving beasts haha...
he is actually selling puppies... purebred pits $100 right now and they are 8 weeks old..

This was a fun thing - a dog breed selector - the very last question before "submit" was tolarance to heat. Put in your criteria and it gives percentage results and pictures. Link (Start your search) is middle of page on left center side next to white box.
