I'd like to add...

There are a lot of "good" people who prefer to spend their time at the drags or the hill... but don't care to ride the dunes...

The choice to ride or watch where you please should not determine whether you are a "good guy" or a "bad guy"...

Statistically you have greater chance of dying on the way to or from the dunes

Not sure if I agree with this one. Seems like most accidents are at the drags or the hill. Personally I would rather dune. I could go the whole season without being at the hill or drags.

QUOTE (your basic sandrail @ Oct 6 2008, 10:27 PM) *
If the number of dune users dwindles... there will be less force to be reckoned with when people are working to close the dunes... granted, there are many more un-educated dune users than the educated. Though most are very good people, there is the small percent that no amount of education will "fix"

Harsh enforcement in the same haphazard fashion that is occurring today and has occurred in the past will only work to reduce the number of good people going to the dunes... Closing the drags or the hills will stop the bad people from going to the dunes, but it will also deter the good...

The laws that are needed for people's safety and for the beauty of Mother G are already in effect... we don't need any further laws... we need the competent enforcement of those in existence. How many times have you seen officers speeding off to catch someone with a broken whip at the base of Olds, only to ignore the guys burning a couch?

During the season, almost every weekend since they changed their tactics, which was around Nov. 01.

Least us not forget the young man who is still in a wheelchair, because of, now Special Agent Ray Leloup (aka Lt.) and his partner beat into the sand becasue he didnt have a pass. You know, the one that was regonized in the ASA news letter, full page with photo. It was printed after his incedent, and it was an article full of praise and how happy the ASA was that the BLM put him in charge of Glamis, go figure. Its a real gem, dig it up. He also can be seen in full glory posing with some sand tramps on a cheesy Glamis video, (will post the title later), but its one of those that all the do-gooders hate, irony, sure is. This all took place the same season this hero put a child in a wheelchair, was honored by the ASA and was in a crappy sand video in full uniform.

Yea some of us see alot.

www.newsroom-I.net/blog/archives/2003_11.html

And as far as actaul fatalities, most, almost all happen on or near sand hwy, not the hill or the drags, (in Glamis proper anyways) FYI

If this year is anything like the past few years, more people will die in the small dunes than at the drags.

As a matter of fact, I don't recall a single death at the drags in glamis. I do remember quite a few incidents where people were drunk, at night, unbelted, 6 people in a 4 seat rail, or careless, or driving too fast or hit a witches eye...

As far as whether or not one goes to the drags, it's irrelevant. The fact is some people like to run the drags, and others like to go and watch. Other people dune, and still others stay home on the couch.

If you asked the people on the couch about duning...

would you consider their answers relevant? Why not?

I could not disagree more.
"Burning Trucks" "Stolen Crap" and "trash" are all illegal now.
You say you put your faith in the local law enforcement and yet they are completely incompetent and incapable of enforcing those laws.
So you seem to be suggesting that the best way to deal with the incompetent and incapable cops is to just close "those" areas down.

But what will you do when another guy like you posts...
"I support the local cops. I hope they crackdown on the "rebel" rednecks who do nothing but party and drink all night, driving in their loud trucks at all hours"... and it's YOUR weekend at glamis which gets "shut down"?

Glamis is not yours, nor is it mine. It is all of ours. It is there to be enjoyed in any legal manor by anyone and I refuse to support anyone or anything that does not accept that.

Because the moment I do is the moment it becomes illegal for me to enjoy glamis in the manor that I find enjoyable, which is my choice and has nothing to do, whatsoever in whether YOU find it "acceptable".

don't take it out of content.I never said close it, i said LET THEM ALL IN....then ENFORCE THE LAW....your opinion is trying to overwrite my comment. Your taking the liberty to imply words I did not speak, and you go as far as to say what will i do? Yes, I support the police, absolutely..as a guy who pays his registration, his permit fees, his insurance on his vehicles, I could go on....I got NO ISSUE with cops running my vin, checking my spark arrestor, and so on...
I don't think it is accurate for you to be so biased and opinionated with your whole post..the rebel statement? is that implying that it is me? That is funny....
Anyways, i don't see the need to go on and on about the cops in Glamis...I've been going for over 30 years and have never had an issue with them, unless I was doing something wrong, not listening to the forewarnings, or not applying common sense when i could see a situation was brewing.
I've been to the hills when they say get out, and I have watched from a far off dune as they launch pepper grenades, and shoot the people who stay.
just as I have seen the people throw bottles, cans, etc at them first.
Too many people take comments and turn them into other words and statements which were never stated, dream of conspiracies, and feel some sort of entitled philosophy. Well, i don't agree with that, which is our fundamental difference at times. let em all in, and crack the whip, only those outside the law should take heed....
big had
I dont support closing it, just as I wouldn't support awarding anyone damages if they get hit by an out of control buggy....and there lies the issue for me....cops hang out at the drags..so expect a heavy presence and a possible pull over...whips are required..so if you dont have one ad get a ticket, shut up and pay it..bottom line....were all adults, nobody deserves special circumstances.....nobody is special.....it is what it is..and we all know it.

I always take the Newbie/Visitor folks in our Camp to the drags.

These are the first timers to Glamis.

They ALWAYS love it.
Big $$$ Cars doing fast runs....the party atmosphere....the adrenaline.

We go, look, take some pictures.....and then go for a ride.

It's simply a part of the experiance.

I hope they figure out the safety issues and keep it safe and open.

I already pointed out that more people have died in the dunes than at the drags. So by THAT measure of safety, (you know, numbers of dead people) the dunes are more dangerous than the drags.

True, the drags LOOK more dangerous because of the speeds involved and the number of people assembled, but then driving in the streets of TJ looks even more dangerous than that. The fact remains, I am not aware of a single fatality at the Glamis drags since Jan of 2003. That's over 5-1/2 yrs.

So, if the dunes are more dangerous, using your logic, then the dues are in much greater danger of being closed. For safety reasons, of course.

I'm not debating one area vs another.
I'm stating how I enjoy the Drags and my hopes they do not close them.

What is your point?

I sure hope they don't get closed. I, personally, have only been to Glamis once. (Going again in a couple weeks because I loved it so much) When I was there the drags were a blast. Yes, they are dangerous, but so is duning in general. The drags are part of Glamis. yay.gif

All you can do is try to be as safe as possible and take extra caution when out there. Those that have kids or are more concerned about their lives will just park farther back rather than hang out like the asshats right on the edge of where they go speeding by. Kinda common sense isn't it? Oh wait thats right, not everyone comes stock with that. icon_biggrin.gif

If the only reason you other guys go to G is to run the drags, put slicks on your rides and go to a track... Better yet, sell it and make G less crowded for the rest of us. Sorry but IMO that's just the wrong attitude to have when it comes to something that could potentially save a life.

they will not do this .

1. as soon as they posted it , it would mean they assume liability for the drags and that will not happen they do not want the liability .
2. I personally spoke with Chief LEO BOXX he said no way because of the liability .

Sounds stupid to me, but I thought I would post it to just confirm that it was false. Anybody have a BLM connection they can call?

I think the drags are great. I stand back behind a car or truck and just peek at them. One gets out of control and I'm a runnin! It reminds me of my old street racing days. No lights or someone organizing everyone to wait in lines etc...

I have a friend who drag races and he is always complaining about the lines. Wait all day and go down the strip twice! And if a few guys blow up their motors, the track is shot. thumb.gif for the glamis drags!

I personally like to watch the drags - but it's also nice to dune when so many others are at the drags...

Early Sat afternoon, not much of a crowd, but there were some real azz hats there. One guy doing wheelies was pretty out of control and several times we thought he was gonna take out the crowd - lucky he didn't - IMHO!

Other azz hats crossing in trucks, quads etc - would not want to be flying over the first jump at 100+ and have some idiot a quarter mile away crossing in their effing truck!

I hope I am not repeating an answer here but last weekend ASA and SDORC Sponsored an event at Toyota of El Cajon ("The First Annual Sand Dirt Spectacular"). They had all the top guys and gals from BLM, California State Parks, Border Patrol, Imperial County Sheriff and of course ASA and SDORC. This question was asked, The BLM's position was things would remain unchanged, the head manager of BLM Glamis said the drags are an important part of Glamis and was not ging to change that. The Head BLM ranger said they would be looking at obvious reckless driving next to crowds and Imperial County Sheriff agreed.

They also spoke of many other issues affecting Glamis the ASA will be posting info from the meeting. I have the Q&A notes and will post them on our website next week.

On a side note rumros from Orange County CHP They will be stepping up enforcement and checking State Wide of GVWR on those big haulers this season, also correct license classes.

Thanks guys, I firgured it was a bunch of BS. I knew we would get the truth from someone on this board. I can't wait for the drags on Halloween!

Maybe we should test out are newly rebuilt cars with a little, catch me if you can for pink slips. OR we can just chill and enjoy the show this time!!! HA. you bring the margs bitch........ happydrunks.gif thefinger.gif

Anytime someone gets hurt, or killed, a new rule or law always results.

The cars that are built nowadays are extremely fast and have alot of horsepower. A number of these cars are purchased by inexperienced drivers, driving WAY over there ability. As much as I like the drags, over the years I have seen a number of close calls. I used to watch from the front row and over the years have worked my way back. The spectators have slowly moved in closer creating less room to recover from a mistake. It's not like it was 10-15 years ago. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing on big weekends, I know I probably get heat for saying that. But it really is only a matter of time before a car goes cartwheeling into the crowd, and injuring or killing a number of people.

Everyone has seen the asshat that has to drive right along the edge of the crowd, in a car that is obviously on the border of out of control, as though no one would see him if he moved in 50'. These are the guys that insist they own the dunes and have no respect for others safety.

Well said!!!! It is so true and its going to happen, a drive thinks he can do anything next thing you know he is side ways into the crowd. I have been staying away from the drags for this very same reason, not to mention that is where all the Rangers looking to write tickets.

during big weekends It can get pretty crazy, I would like a little organization though maybe a set of drag lights set up on a timer, red, yellow, green 60 sec pause, red, yellow, green etc..
totaly that would be great! two or three at a time. with a tree. not hitting the start at 60+ while the outher guy is sitting still. I would love to see somthing like that happen

^^^ I was thinkin the same thing...

If the only reason you other guys go to G is to run the drags, put slicks on your rides and go to a track... Better yet, sell it and make G less crowded for the rest of us. Sorry but IMO that's just the wrong attitude to have when it comes to something that could potentially save a life.

I agree drags are really gay !!! wow I just drove in a straigt line oh my god did you see that!

wtf.gif These gotta be the dumbest posts on this thread yet 25bangin.gif The drags are cool even if you stop by for a little while igor.gif
