My friend doesn't want to look like an idiot, but lucky for him I'm used to it so I'll ask the question.

How do you connect the battery charger to MoHo batteries that are wired in series?

(Y'know, that whole positive to negative, common sense says it should blow up thing.)

I predicted that you guys would have an answer in five minutes, so ready, set, GO!!

Thanks in advance.

Six minutes and counting, you guys are slacking!

Just two 6 volts or a whole bank?

I predicted five minutes, but given the fact that you provided visual aids, fifteen minutes is pretty flippin' good!

You guys are good!

Thanks.

Awesome, do you need a special charger, common sense told me to hook it up this way but it keeps turning my charger off when I do. I know the charger is good because I checked it by charging my daughters little 90 battery.

I'll bring the moho into work tomorrow and try it again, it sucks when you have no power at the storage lot. icon_cry.gif

Shouldn't need a special charger... are the batteries really low on power?

How long until it shuts off? Some chargers may shut down if it takes an extended amount of time to bring the batts up to capacity... which can happen on dual 6 volt since they have a high AH rating.

Another thing...

Are the batteries good on water? is your charger electronically controlled or no? does it have a deep-cycle setting?

What is the voltage across each individual battery?

It shuts off in a matter of seconds, the batteries are a year old but it has been sitting since June. The water level is good and the battery meter in the moho reads in the red below 10 volts. Im sure a good long weekend in the dunes with the gen running alot will charge them puppies right up.

You know what, thats the plan then im heading to the dunes this weekend.

Yes and yes, deep cycle, it says that it is good for RV and marine deep cycle batteries.

One thing that will cause a charger to shut off like that is a "short" condition, as in a shorted battery, or a short to ground.

BASTAGE!!!
Oldman
Can you set your charger for 6 volts? If you can remove the jump wire between the two batteries and charge one 6 volt at a time. This also should let you know if one of the batteries is bad as it will shut the charge down if one is shorted.
your basic sandrail
Should be able to tell if a cell is shorted by checking the voltage across each battery.

Whoodatt
I will get to the bottom of this tomorrow, might be a bad battery or bad cell. Thank you all for the things to look for, its obvious I don't no chit about batteries or RV charging systems.

If they're reading below 10 volts and they've been like that for more than a few hours, they're dead. You should NEVER let you batts get below 12.06 volts (which is 50%).
Print out this chart and keep it in your rig.

Alright. Just hooked up four 6 volts. How do I charge them? If I connect the 12v charger like it says to in the diagram above will it charge all 4 since they are all connected together or will it just charge the first two and then when they are done I move them to the second bank of two? Does that make sense?

I don't have all the drawing skills or the time to make it look better, but here you go.

SRMX
Thanks for taking the time to reply. To make sure I understand your drawing, I need to charge each set of 2 batteries separately?

You should be able to charge all the batteries at once.
SRMX
Thanks. I hope it charges both banks. Will check when I get home.
