Anyone found the ultimate filter set up for a stock clutch on a Rhino. We spend 90% of our time at Gordons or Glamis, so it spends alot of time in the dunes. 2 OEM belts and 1 aftermarket (Dayco).

most have ditched thier cvt filters by now, they suck!!!!!! the heat they cause is much much worse than dust and dirt in there.. trust me you dont need one..

Just say NO to cvt filters.

You can take an outerwear and slide it over the end and throw a zip ty on there to hold it on if you Have to have something there.

Right on... Nothing is CHEAP !!!

they were kinda an experiment i think, after people were literally melting belts we detirmined they suck!! if you clean your clutch assembly once or twice a season you are good to go in a dusty enviornment.

I just purchased my rhino, can you point me in the direction of this CVT filer? smile.gif

Also, CVT stands for.... constant velocity....

the cvt does not come with a filter from the factory, that should tell you all you need to know. dont go out and spend $20.00 on a filter just to ruin your belt.

on the 660 model the cvt air intake tube is directly behind the drivers seat, im sure its the same for the 700.

Gotcha, thanks.

Sorry about the thread hijack!

Factory left it open for a reason, I wouldn't 2nd guess Yamaha.. I ditched mine, never had problem.

IMHO you have a clutch problem. You should not go thru belts like that. There might be a burr or something on your clutch that is causing abnormal wear. I use the uni one and keep it clean an not oiled. I just opened and replaced my belt for the 1st time. 06 660 with 1400 miles on it, lots of dunes and desert dust with a heavy 4 seat cage. The oem belt was totally fine and probably had another 1000 miles on it. I replaced it anyway. Yamaha now has a heavy duty v belt that is "bomber" in addition to the regular oem belts. I put one of those in it cost me $175 at fodrills but my rhino was down to like 49-50 mph with old belt and now with the new belt im back to 54-55 mph. Nite time rhino nation UNITE!!!!!!!!

i think it has more to do with your driving habits. i have a friend who goes through belts like no other, before and after his sheave was replaced with a modified one. this guy is on the wood the moment he starts his rhino, all the exra heat created by being at WOT all the time eats belts alive, and adding a filter to the cvt makes it much worse. conversely the guy that cruises around w the family can make a belt last quite a while.

Hmmm.......this is the first I've heard of this "ditch the filter" talk. I got 2500 miles on my original belt that finally let go last season. It had a CVT filter for about 2400 miles. And I don't p***y foot it.

I've been running an aFe CVT filter for several hundred miles now with no overheating issues...even ran it pinned from gordon's to Glamis and back on the sand highway last weekend with no problems. The filter does have a lot of dust in it...but it's a dry filter and you just bang the dust off and re-install it. I've seen how much dust gets on it, I'll keep mine on.

I ran a CVT filter on my '06 Rhino and never had any problems with overheating the belt or trans, and i had the engine built. When I did clutch work on it I swapped out the belt to a heavy-duty belt that came with the EPI (Earlandson Performance inc.) clutch kit.

I've found that if you have not done any clutch work and have a lot of resistance on your SXS like weight or large tires (sand) and are constantly running your engine at high rpms with a CDI box that's where the belts start to fray and overheat. When we were on our ride in Mexico there were atleast 4-belts that tore to shreds because of being pinned on long stretches of open road and paved road.

Driving habits, too much pressure on the primary, primary and secondary not lining up correct, all of these could contribute to your belt failure.
