Need some help here. I am buying an 86 250R ATC, current owner has no title. We ran the vin, and found nothing as far as being stolen or anything, he has had it for 2 years, never registered. How do I get a title, am I required to for an 86?
I live in AZ, think he bought it in cali a few years ago.
Anyone have info they could share. I know there are allot of old camp bikes, do they all have titles??
Thanks

Yes, you need to have a title to register the thing. It's a pain out here in Ca. You have to get the paperwork from the DMV, get a letter from the guy you bought it off of saying he sold it to you without a title, have CHP run the vin, have it inspected by DMV, take it back to CHP to have it inspected again, and then pay your $$$ to the DMV. You might have it alot easier in Arizona. Hope so anyway. Ca. can be a pain.
You do need a green sticker or arizona registration to run it at Glamis.

Do you know when he bought it? My friend had a 86 250R with no title stolen from his grandmothers house 2 or 3 years ago. Is there any way you could possibly get me a pic or describe the bike to me? His 86 had a high flight seat with "ATC" on it, blue hand grips, a Paul Turner pipe and an extended swingarm. If the bike resembles this could you let me know?
I know theres a huge possibilty this isn't the bike... I'm just hoping... one day...maybe... we'll find it. Thanks.

In CA there are now companies that do the running around for you, they specialize in weird stuff. Sorry I don't have any names, but you might find them on the net or in the yellow pages. They charge like $50.

Be careful - a buddy of mine bought a quad on ebay. Everything seemed alright until he tried to sell it (he never registered it in his name). Come to find out, The VIN had been altered on the frame. The CHP or DMV caught it. The bike had been stolen from Michigan. Needless to say, My buddy is out like 4 grand.

Wow, were they able to track down the seller? Did Ebay get involved? Did he use Paypal?

They actually did track down the seller, but I don't think E-bay was much help. Also, I think he did use Paypal. He buys stuff on E-bay a lot.
The way I understand it, the CHP and/or DMV have a book that shows what a VIN is supposed to look like on any given vehicle/model year. This particular one was a totally different font than what the book showed. I guess there is another location on ATV's where you can find the VIN, and that's what led them to the rightful owner.
One thing they let him do was pull off all parts and accessories that he had receipts for.

I also live in AZ what you need to do is contact the DMV and apply for a lost tittle they will tell you what to do.
Had a friend who found a seezed Banshee at sycamore put it in the back of his truck and tried to find the owner who never reported it stolen. Did a tittle search found the last registered owner in Vegas or something who said he sold it years ago ,so /w/ no police report saying it was stolen the DMV sent him a tittle /w/ his name on it.
So you should not have any trouble getting a tittle , might take some time but you will get it.
