Hey all,
My Husband and I are from Norther Alberta in Canada. We are traveling down to ride the dunes during the Thanksgiving Long Weekend this month.
Any helpful hints as to where to set up camp and where the best places to ride are would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks In advance
Jess

Welcome to GlamisDunes.com!

My husband and I got married at the dunes! icon_biggrin.gif But thanks to many of the folks here @ GD.com we got to honeymoon in St. Thomas USVI! oto.gif I would suggest that you send a message to "Robbie" here as he is the SandLord (aka Landlord) of the place that many of us camp that is called the Compound! It is a private membership campground and is exclusive to GD.com peeps. So basically everyone there is here on the Board! We have all kinds of rides, hanging out, potlucks for dinner etc going on, especially for Thanksgiving. icon_biggrin.gif

I think it is AWESOME that you are planning to spend your Honeymoon so far from home! I am curious what made you choose to come to Mother Glamis instead of the Bahamas or wherever! icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome once again, we look forward to welcoming new friends!!!!

If you want a close nit party scene then you wanna go to gecko, cement flats, garbage flats, the store area etc. . But be there at least 2 days before T-Day These areas are close to the larger tracked up dunes and easy to get in and out to the hwy. However during this holiday these areas will be super packed.

If you want more of a secluded area go down the the washes. The farther down you go the less people there will be. But plan on going 3 to 5 miles in order to escape the crouds. The good thing is that the dunes are much tamer and less tracked. And you can get to the bigger stuff from the back of the washes with a fun 10 to 15 min ride through the smaller dunes. You will have to deal with a little dust if there is no breeze and the train. I particualerly like the train noise at night. Makes me sleep like a baby. But the first time you hear it at 3 am you may think someone moved your rig over the tracks while you were sleeping. Just stay in bed and relax.

If you have never ridden here before beware. Many people come out here and are so stoked to be here that they let thier safety gaurd down and end up in tragedy. Try and remember these basic rules.

1). Consider that every peak is a razor and has a drop off on the other side.

2). Always assume a buggy is coming over the razor that you are climbing.

3).When you are approaching the top make a gradual 90 and run along the ridge with your flag on the high side of the hill.

4) When you are shooting bowls use your altitude to look across into the next bowl to clear possible traffic.

5). If you ride through camp areas always assume some little kid on a 40 will be pulling right out in front of you as you drive by all the rigs.

6). If you are gassing it across any flat camping areas assume that you will hit a 5 foot berm left there by the quad track that some one built.

7). Don't try to cross the tracks with your bike or car.

8). Lock up everything you want to keep when you go to sleep.

9). At sundown grab a chair (and maybe a camera) and sit down facing west. Specially if there are low clouds.

10). Prepare to have your jaw drop as you venture back into the dunes and witness the place's awesomeness.

11). When you leave. Pick up all yours, and whomever's trash left in your area by careless others. We all will thank you for it.

Peace, Have a great time.

WOW!

See.... I've told people for years to have their honeymoon out at the dunes...

If I get married... I want a 14 day stay at the dunes for my honeymoon... It'll be just like my normal stays... just 7 times longer laughing.gif

QG,
We are both avid riders and for as long as we have been together, we talked about riding the mother load at Glamis. So once we decided to get married, we both said, Honeymoon in GD!!! We have been looking forward to this trip for over a year now. Neither one of us are really into the resort get away either. Heat, sand, camping and quadding is our definition of a good time!
Thats awesome that you two were married in the dunes, what cool pics you guys must have!!
I will look up "Robbie" and see what we can do to get a spot in the Compound. Thanks so much for the helpful hints. One thing we really want to do is hook up with people that ride out there regularly. Safer and a whole lot more fun!
Again, thanks QG, Look forward to meeting up one day!

DA,
Thanks for the helpful advise, words to live by!
I think we would like to camp in an area where the party scene isnt as wild as what a person would see on say the movie"Glamis Gone Wild". Little tamer, but still fun. Any recommendations?
