So....what's the exact date that the dumpsters will be gone? I saw the sign as I was heading out but didn't have time to read it.

I don't think it's so bad. If you can pack it in you can pack it out. Besides I think all those dumpsters are an eyesore. Us off-roaders should be able to use the dunes, but I don't think we should burden the local (county) area with all our trash. And if it saves a gob of money that can be used for other things then I'm all for it.

no doubt if they are saving gobs of money, they are rolling it into environmental studies to shut us down.

Actually it was a LACK of studies that gave the CBD the opening they needed to close us down thanks to the way the ESA is written.

More studies are a GOOD thing for the most part.

Personally, I have no problem taking my trash all the way back to phoenix. The problem I see is that many people will not. Bags of trash will be left where people camped and where the dumpsters once stood. Local shops (ie fast food resturants, gas stations) in the nearest locations such as El Centro and Yuma will have packed full dumpters every Sunday afternoon. And trash will be blown out of the back of pick up trucks and flatbed trailers littering the highways. Trust me, it's going to be a nightmare. I can't think of any other place in this world that charges a usage fee but doesn't provide a place to put your trash.

^^^ Amen brother. There's just too many people who don't really care. It's one big landfill for them if it's not at their house.

Even with dumpsters, the group I camp with has cleaned up a lot of garbage from the garbage that leaves it there.

Great points Chance! I'm not sure how the budget is setup for maintaining the dunes but I would think a percentage should be allocated for trash removal. If they want to charge $100 a season then I'd pay it if I knew the extra $10 went toward dumpsters. It's a lot less an eye sore than the trash that we will see from not having them! And what are they doing with all the extra money they get from the people that buy their pass at the dunes? I'm sure managing the finances is tough but trash maintenance should not be the first to go.

Removing the dumpsters is a crock of shit... excuse my language. For one our camp left this morning and we had gone on a ride yesterday when everyone left. Let me tell you, People do not know how to use a trash bag. There was crap in the dunes and all over the flats. What's going to happen when those dumpsters aren't going to be there. The dunes and the flats are going to be WORSE. I'm thinking alot of people will dump there trash at 4th street mobile station, and it will be all piled up there, then they are going to complain. If we are getting rid of the dumpsters where is our permit money going to, you know the extra money they got for increasing the prices.

Tell you what guy’s. We’re EFFED! Remember the big 40 yard dumpsters we used to have. The tree huggers got legislation passed to force the BLM to use the tiny Raven proof dumpsters with lids. The cost was greatly increased. Why Raven proof? To protest the Desert Tortes which I have never seen in 25 Yrs! What Tortes? Now, because of all the rowdiness, which goes hand-n-hand with increased visitation, the cost of LEO’s and medical staff is greatly increased. I have been going to the south dunes since ‘84. The first time I ever saw any LEO’s out there was in ‘88, and we were like, "WTF are they doing out here"!?! I don’t know if anyone remembers what T-day looked like at Gordon’s flats is ‘85. There might have been 100 camps. We were saying “holy #$%^”, look at all the people out here. Seeing all those people out there now just depresses me. It used to be my special place. Anyway, my point is, I think this was the tree hugger’s plan all the while. Now the place will be absolutely littered like never before, and it’s back to the Liberal courts is EFFING San Francisco! WTF! Why there?!?! We don’t stand a chance up there. I think our dunes are about to come under attack like never before.
Also, what if they were shut down? Would it be street legal vehicles only like some other desert areas? All the high $$$ equipment would be going for cheap in So Cal.

Good points. I hear 'ya. If too much trash is left around then the greenies or even the local government can just close access to the area, so campers at Gordon's better watch it. Also, I've never camped up at Glamis on a big weekend. Do they have dumpsters up there and are they going away, or are we just talking Gordon's. And what about Buttercup?

It's the entire dune area. All the trouble (in this case trash) starts at Glamis and works it's way down.
