We haven't been to the dunes in quite a few years and are now being told the besides the permit we now need a OHV sticker ($30) for each quad that we plan on riding. After making numerous calls to BLM, and other agencies we got different answers from everybody. Now that we are totally confused can somebody PLEASE set us straight on what we need to be LEGAL at the dunes................Thanks

You need a non-resident OHV permit if you come from a State that does not register OHVs. If you have your OHV registered in your home state, then you just need to follow those requirements: License plate, etc....

http://www.ohv.parks.ca.gov/

"All vehicles operated off-highway on Public Lands in California are required to be street-licensed or registered as an off-highway vehicle (OHV). If you are visiting California from another state and your vehicle does not have current registration from your home state, you must purchase a California Nonresident OHV Use Permit before you go off-roading. The 2009 Nonresident OHV Permits are now available for purchase. To locate a vendor, please download the Nonresident Permit Vendor List PDF listed below. "

I would recommend purchasing the sticker before you go to the dunes. We tried all weekend to get a sticker for an unregistered rail and all of the vendors were sold out.

I have AZ off road plates on all my quads but the BLM say's that these are just title plates and I will need the sticker, and someone in the Ca. parks service told me I wouldn't need the sticker with those plates. Sounds to me like they just want$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If I am correct your off road RV plate is fine until Jan 1 2009 when the new Az copper sticker goes into effect. At that time you will need to have the Az copper sticker or you will need the out of state Cal. sticker...either one but you must have one or the other. Hope that helps.

Buy the sticker, you'll be ok. tongue.gif

Do you have to have a non-resident sticker to use an OHV in Calif. if you are from Ariz.? Does the Ariz off-road “RV Plate” or an Ariz street legal “MC Plate” satisfy the Calif OHV sticker requirements.

Not at this time. AZ is working on an OHV registration program for the 2008/2009 season, BLM will honor the AZ RV and MC plates, if properly mounted on the vehicle.

However, in the 2009/2010 Dunes season, you will need to purchase a CA non-resident if you do not have a valid AZ OHV registration. An RV or MC plate will not be recognized at that time.

CVC 38020 states that except as otherwise provided in this division, no person shall operate, transport, or leave standing any off-highway motor vehicle subject to identification under this code which is not registered under the provisions of Division 3 (commencing with Section 4000), unless it is identified under the provisions of this chapter. A violation of this section is an infraction. Riding in violation of seasons established by Section 2412(f) and 2415 of Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations constitutes a violation of this section. This section shall not apply to the operation, transportation, or leaving standing of an off-highway vehicle pursuant to a valid special permit.

A current and properly displayed Arizona “MC” plate satisfies the registration requirements in California, however it does not mean the vehicle is street legal. There are other equipment requirements that need to be met such as lights, windshields, street legal tires to name a few (CVC Div 12).

CVC 22651(j) When a vehicle is found illegally parked and there are no license plates or other evidence of registration displayed, the vehicle may be impounded until the owner or person in control of the vehicle furnishes the impounding law enforcement agency evidence of his or her identity and an address within this state at which he or she can be located.

so the BLM says no, and the state of CA says yes!!! id spend the $30 and get yourself a sticker. better to be safe than impounded!!!

Just got off the phone with Deputy Masad from the Sheriffs Department at the Sand Dunes. They will accept the MC or RV lic plated, no sticker is needed! As far as the Safety Certification as long as the kids under 18 are riding with an adult no certification is needed.

Yes you can spend $30 for the state of Ca. to waste on whatever they seem fit bor just wait and give your own state $25 that they are going to want in Jan.
Have your RV plates on your bikes and have fun and if they try to impound tell them to get a stupidvisor out there NOW!!!!!!!!

A word of advice here.

The law is the law and what one LEO might say does not negate what the law provides. Another LEO might look at things differently, but that is not the job of the LEO. Only a Judge can rule on the law, not the LEO.

The state of AZ has been dragging their (_|_) on this registration for many, many years. Finally - as of the first of the year, they have a program that allows you, as a AZ resident, to operate your OHV on California public lands without purchasing the Non-Resident permit.

I'm from out of state (Kansas) We're coming out over Christmas and I don't want to waste any time once I get there buying permits etc. Where can I get my offroad sticker, or whatever we need and have it mailed
