Know the ISDRA Rules & Regulations -- Law enforcement is cracking down!

ISDRA RULES AND REGULATIONS
Rules are designed to promote public safety in the Imperial Sand Dunes and have been in effect since 1983. It is your responsibility to know the law. These rules apply to public lands within the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area.

DUMPING. Dumping of sewage (black) and/or gray water is prohibited.

Following are some example photos of some of the illegal dumping calls ICSO deputies cited during the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend in Glamis.

Doesn't seem like too far fetched that just about anyone would do it.

Not that I do it anymore, (I've dumped grey once 4 or 5 seasons ago) but think about it..... If a trailer has a 100 water tank and 50 gallons grey storage....do the math...

For the most part I wizz in the sand...which is more fun/comfortable but shower water adds up real fast.

so have i.

but dumping fresh water is not illegal. it does make a muddy mess in camp though, if you dont dig a hole for it to go into.

Rusty
I agree - it's illegal and it stinks.

However....

If you take a shower outside, or wash your hands outside, or do your dishes outside, is it not the same thing? Granted, it's not the "all at once quantity", but it's the same water. I think it stinks because it starts to decompose or ferment in the tank.....

WHAT? you can't dump fresh water? Really? now that I didnt know. I always dump out my extra before I leave to save weight. WOW...

ONE-A-DAY
I have heard that of your grey fills up you can open your grey and your black and leave the cap on, the larger volume of grey will flow up into the black and even them out getting you some more room in grey. Sounds like it would work, the only drawback being when you have to remove the cap to dump later on.

Does this idea work? My grey was very close to filling over turkey day but I had lots or room left in the black.

You can dump fresh water, just don't do it through camp..

As for dumping Grey water VS washing/showering/etc. outside, once it goes into a tank, it must be dumped in a sewer system only... Nasty little bugs in there, don't ya know!!

Yes, it is legal to dump fresh water in Glamis. I had read on here that dumping fresh water is illegal, but that is not true...

It is legal to dump fresh water as you're going down the fwy.

I would rather take a bucket and do it the manual way.. Or get a end cap that has a garden hose end on it and run a hose to your toilet..

We do everything we can to put grey into black when dry camping. Use a tub in the sink when doing dishes, it can then be dumped in the toilet or outside. Putting same type of tube in the shower at your feet so you catch as much of the run off as possible and dump in the toilet or outside. remains of the coffee, in the toilet! Makes for a wonderful brew of stuf in the Black tank!

guinea pig it for us, and let us know how it works out for you. tongue.gif i dont think i would be willing to give it a try. i have heard of people dumping grey water into buckets, and then dumping it into their toilet though. sounds like a better option to me, than what you posted up. that would be one nasty mess when you pull the cap off to dump.

i agree with rusty, its no different from being an outside camper like most of us used to be. but once it hits a tank, the law considers it wast water, and must be dumped into a sewer. the reason it stinks, is because people dump all kinds of stuff into their sinks, and dont clean tanks out, and they get that stinky smell in them.

Yes, it is illegal to dump fresh water in Glamis. I'm not sure why, maybe just ot make it easier t oenforce no dumping rules.

It is legal to dump fresh water as you're going down the fwy. Go figure.

How is it any different than pouring out a bottle of water on the ground? I think that would be a pretty easy ticket to win in court.

hmmmmm. i have been told otherwise from blm officers. i was stopped for grey dumping on my way out, headed for wash road once, but once they realized it was fresh water, they sent me on my way.

law changed, or was he mis-informed?
O Soto Gari
Fuzion toyhaulers are actually a little smarter about this.. Mine has 150 gallons of fresh and 2 45 gallon grey tanks..One for the kitchen and one for the bathroom.. would be easy to leave the cap on and open both valves to even them out.. Can't see using that much water in the kitchen.

It has something to do with the storage of the water... There was a thread about this a while back... I've tried looking for it but cant find it! It spells it out perfectly! You can not dump your fresh water on BLM land but you CAN dump it on the highway! coocoo.gif for sure!!!

I added a 3rd valve near the cap. It was only about $6 or so. I just open the grey valve, open the black valve and let them equalize. The 3rd valve keeps any liquid from going near the cap. Then I close both valves. When it's time to dump, I open the cap, and there's nothing there. I hook up the hose, open the black, then open the 3rd valve and it flushes right out.

Ive done that. When you get home you gotta get a 50# trash bag and put it over the tube and cap, then unscrew the cap from the outside of the bag. Than all you do is dump the bag down at a station or your house if you have a dump there. Its a hassel but it works if that what you gotta do.

On extended trips I take a couple of blue water barrels. when i have used enough water from the fresh tank, i pump water from the barrel into the fresh tank. Since the grey water tank is full and the black tank is usually about 1/3, the pressure is higher in the grey tank and the water flows from grey to black. Once they equalize, just shut the valves.

We were just at Ocotillo Wells from the 21st to the 30th of November... along about the 24th, I pulled the trailer over near the outhouses, and took a 5 gallon bucket and drained some of both tanks - and poured it into the outhouse. Chitty job, but it got us through.

sounds sensible.........but if you mis judge you black tank volume.............it's the bushes for you.

On extended trips I take a couple of blue water barrels. when i have used enough water from the fresh tank, i pump water from the barrel into the fresh tank. I then hook up the hose to the cap i have with a hose fitting on it and pump the grey water into the barrel . you can get e cheap 12 volt water pump at harbor Freight.

So are you saying you pump grey water into a tank you also use for fresh water???!!!

I hope its early and I read that wrong. That sounds wrong on many levels!

Sure, were talking grey water here, not poop water with corn in it. When I get home, I pump the grey into my drain, hose out the barrel , and disinfect real good with about 1/2 gallon of bleach

OK, about dumping into the sewer when you get home. My neighbor has a dump at teh base of his driveway that he and I have been using for a couple of years now. He was just recently told by someone on the POA, or city council, I can't remember which, that is illegal???? A $1500.00 fine. Has anyone ever heard of this??? Should I call the local water company and find out before he/I get hammered? I can't imagine that it's not OK. What's the difference in taking a dump in the toilet? Unless it has something to do w/the black chemicals?
