There has been some confusion on where the ASA stands in relation to trash service at the ISDRA.

To clarify this matter I have attached a position paper the ASA has sent to the BLM.

We welcome your views and comments.

I think that taking the trash containers away is the wrong way to go for the simple fact that there will lots of people out there just leave their trash where they are camped and drive off. I will be picking all my trash up and hauling it away but this is going to have effects on the dunes with more trash left behind. Just my .02 and I have been wanting to post this for about two months.

I'm on board with ASA... I pack in/pack out! I already pay for trash at home. Besides that I go through my trash once home and pull out all cans and glass for recycling!

I have always supported the ASA, but I have a couple of problems with removing the dumpsters. 25soapbox.gif

My main issue is we only visit Glamis once a year on Thanksgiving, and when we do we stay a minimum of 8 days straight, one trip was 10, this is because we have a 12+ hour drive from Northern California, so hauling that much trash back home is going to suck, not to mention the older trash.

Second issue I see is trash burning, people are going to light a nice big fire before they leave and throw it in. 25no_no_no.gif

Then you have the other people that are going to pile it up on the small little trash cans of business in Brawley.

It just doesn't sound like it has all been thought through. But I bet someone will see this as an opportunity and well see some one driving around and collecting trash bags for a price.
rivermobster
they never should have been put there in the first place. pack it in, pack it out.

im not worried about me or you , its those that wont pack it out that worry me.
ONE-A-DAY
How long have the dumpsters been there? Prior to them being placed how bad was the trash issue?

Hit the nail on the head right there!!!!!
your basic sandrail
Question...

Will that extra 400,000 dollars go towards stationing rangers at the former dumpster sites to inform those that want to drop their trash there?

Will that extra 400,000 dollars go towards rangers patrolling to ensure that people leaving haven't left their trash in camp?

Will that extra 400,000 dollars go towards ensuring duners don't dump their trash at the Brawley Rally's?

I support the ASA... I would love to see the dumpsters go away... but I'm VERY concerned about what the outcome of the dumpster removal and the subsequent budget excess of 400,000 dollars will bring us.

The people and I use that term loosly that would leave there trash right where it falls will do it weather there is a garbage can 10' from there lazy glutomus maximus or not thats the kind of pigs they are. Some will try and burn what they can to lighten the load and as long as they don't try and burn the stuff that doesn't burn so be it.....
The people who I see this affecting will be the ones in the surounding community's of Blythe, Brawley, ElCentro as well as Yuma. They will see a surge in the amount of trash they will collect on the busy weekends.
Many people who would never leave there trash in the dunes or on the side of the road however will not think twice about throwing a bag into the trash can at the gas station that they stopped at on there return trip. This allready happens I see it everytime I stop at Miller Park in Blythe as we wait in line to dump our tanks somebody allways walks over to the trash can and throws away a bag or two. With no trash cans as we leave the dunes I see more and more good natured well meaning people doing this.

Nope... even with the dumpsters there those same people you are worried about still just leave there chit in the dunes! Vets weekend I saw all kinds of crap, I mean A LOT of trash, at the big hills. I think the dumpsters help a little but not worth that kind of money... I think the people using the dumpsters are the same people that would pack it out... that is why it was in their truck on the way out to begin with.

I think this is one of the reasons I back the LEOs so much... I say write those tickets for the ones that don't pick up after themselves. It's really not that hard to keep our dunes clean if everyone did their part!!!

The trashers will still be trashers.

and those of us that clean up after them,
wont be able to clean it up anymore.

I disagree Robbie... I make it a point to walk around and pick up trash every trip. We always have room to pack out a bit more than we brought in... I feel it is every duners duty to do so. I realize not everyone is like this... but they should be!!!

It might make it a little more difficult... but good things are worth working for! I put Glamis in that 'good things' category!

You say that now wiat till there is a LEO waiting outside of your trailer one sat morning to give you a ticket...... Would never be you I know you don't litter. But you camped in a spot that has some trash spread out and have't got a chance to pick it up yet, And now it looks like it's yours.

Many of us do, Troy. I think Hogduner has it though. There are many who will take it to the dumpsters, but if it has to go all the way home, they figure screw it...

As for picking up other people's trash and taking it home... that works for normal trips, but what about cleanup weekends? The amount of trash collected on cleanup weekends is far greater than what people can take home and stick in their garbage cans.

It's been said that dumpsters will be arranged for cleanup weekends. Whether it's the BLM or the organizers who are arranging that I don't know. But that was brought up back when this was first announced.

You might have room in the back of your truck, but a lot of people don't.

Think about other people. The guy with the moho and enclosed trailer. Does he want a dripping leaking pile of trash bags in his enclosed trailer? Does he have room in his trailer at all?

I pull a 5th wheel, and because I have 3 dogs in the back seat of the truck, my aux tank, 5 gas cans, 5er hitch and large ice chest take up about 90% of my bed space. Currently, I take my trash over to the dumpsters on the back of my golf cart before we pack up, but now I'll have room for 1 or 2 bags in the back of the truck, tops. I don't have ANY room to pick up any more trash and haul it home.

Exactly. That's their favorite time to strike, first thing in the morning.

Next thing you know, you're getting a fat ticket for a water bottle that fell out of your kid's chair the night before.

I'd love to see them nail someone leaving big bags of trash.
TroyKrum
I think making room to pack it out is a responsibility of being a duner... I usually have firewood packed in somewhere... so once i burn that I have room for my trash to take home. I also burn any and all paper products, as well as crush any and all cans and plastic bottles. I leave the dunes from a 4 day trip with a 13 gallon trash bag of trash that I made and one or two 55 gallon trash bag of the stuff I picked up from everyone else!

Don't get me wrong here guys... I think the dumpster are a good thing to have... but we have to look at how much it is costing us. I think putting them out there in the first place and now pulling them is going to be the hard part... some people have gotten use to them.

Question... what kind of trash service does the beach store and vendors have? Same stuff... the price is just high for the dumpsters because of the amount of trips that are needed to empty them? I don't understand why we cant find a business or company to donate partial service so the cost wasn't so high. I am sure this has all been covered but it is hard for me to accept there is only one solution to these trash bins.

talk about good ol' fashioned Catholic guilt!

troy, i know your heart is in the right place, most people out there arent like us, if they were we wouldnt need dumpsters at all, but too many people are uninformed about the fight to keep the dunes open and will just say F it, its only a little trash, no big deal, but there will be thousands of idiots doing that, who suffers, us!!!

The same holds true if people keep picking up other people's trash.

They know you'll pick it up, so that's why they leave it. That's just how some people are wired up. They were born to use other people.
