OK IM LOOKIN TO UPGRADE MY SUSPENSION COME TAX RETURN TIME. NOW I HAVE READ ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT I WANT LONG TRAVEL OVER STANDARD TRAVEL. MY QUESTION IS TO YOU SUSPENSION GURU'S.

DOES THAT SAME COMPANIES THAT MAKE STANDARD TRAVEL SUSPENSION MAKE LONG TRAVEL OR DOES ONLY A FEW DO THAT?

FROM EVERYONES EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE WHICH COMPANY IS THE BEST FAR AS QUALITY FOR THE PRICE?

HOW MUCH MORE AM I LOOKIN AT FOR LONG TRAVEL OVER STANDARD?

OK THIS IS WHAT I HAVE NOW THAT I HAVE ASKED THESE QUESTIONS. IVE GOT AN 02' YAMAHA BANSHEE. STOCK SUSPENSION AND MOSTLY STOCK MOTOR(PIPES, AIR FILTER, BOOST BOTTLE THATS IT FOR NOW) IM BUILDING IT FOR RUNNING ACROSS THE DESERT MORE THAN SAND RIDING. I RIDE SAND ABOUT 4 TO 5 TRIPS OUT OF THE YEAR AND THE REST IS DESERT. SO I WANT SOMETHING THATS GONNA HOLD UP TO THE POUNDING OF THE DESERT.

NOW THAT I HAVE ASKED THIS QUESTION I HAVE ANOTHER.

SHOCKS.... WHICH ONES ARE THE BEST FOR MY SET-UP AND WHAT I WANT TO DO WITHT HE BIKE?

I KNOW THAT THE TRIPLE RATE ARE BETTER THAN THE DUAL RATE BUT WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM AND WHAT DOES THE RATES MEAN?

I KNOW REZZIES ARE GREAT BUT ARE THEY WORTH WHAT YOU PAY EXTRA FOR THEM?

MY GOAL IS TO TRY AND GET THE BEST LONG TRAVEL SET UP FOR MY LIKING AND TO SPEND CLOSE TO $1500 FOR EVERYTHING. NO MORE THAN $2K FOR IT THOUGH.

THANKS FOR ANY INFO GIVIN.

For desert riding long travel is the way to go.
Triple rates with rezis if you can afford it.

Dual vs triple? 3 is better than 2.
The triple rates mean they have 3 springs. Each spring works at different rate or size of bumps. The fist coil or spring will soak the small bumps, the second spring and the fisrt spring will soak bigger bumps, and the third spring wth the first and thid spring will soak the mega bumps.

For sand, dual rates are ok since most of the terrain is the same, and when it varies, you get big woops, therefore a dual shock will do.

The rezi takes additional oil, and it helps the oil travel from the shock body to the rezi which means better cooling.

I think Duncan makes the best set up, but they are very pricy.
I would find any one that makes long travel arms, and ask them what shocks they recommend. I like Axis and Elkas for hard riding. They last forever and can be set up and adjusted in a heart beat.

after reading mikes article i decided i wanted long travel but i have these questions first. that way i can research and get what i want not what everyone else likes.

i know the shocks w/ "piggy backs" are ones with rezzies but are they better than the ones that have seperate rezzies? or does it matter?

As far as performance is concerned, NO. There is no difference.

As far as maintenance and repair, you may find that socks with remote reservoirs may cost less to repair in certain situations.

For example, people who ride in the woods, obstacles or tree branches may hit the shock, the shock and the piggybag may get damaged. The piggybag and th shock body is a one piece structure. External resis are separate and usually mounted on the frame of the bike so the potential for damage is less.

My 2 cents.

alot of shock companies don't even offer piggbacks.....

most of the shock companies make both...only the *better* a-arm companies make both

FROM EVERYONES EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE WHICH COMPANY IS THE BEST FAR AS QUALITY FOR THE PRICE?

from my personal experience i prefer TSC shocks, i stilll have stock a-arms...but ive heard Burgard is good bang for the bucks

HOW MUCH MORE AM I LOOKIN AT FOR LONG TRAVEL OVER STANDARD?

at least 1k alltogether (shocks, a-arms, brakes lines, etc...)

TCS for your situation IMHO

I KNOW THAT THE TRIPLE RATE ARE BETTER THAN THE DUAL RATE BUT WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM AND WHAT DOES THE RATES MEAN?

rates = total different springs on each shock more springs = better ride quality

I KNOW REZZIES ARE GREAT BUT ARE THEY WORTH WHAT YOU PAY EXTRA FOR THEM?

yes

not gonna happen...hehehe tongue.gif

TCS did shocks all around for a good friend of mine Banshee...i havent personally rode on it yet...but he says the difference is night and day!!! Long travel is schweet...but is it worth the expence for a non professionl rider? strickly money wise....i would have to say no! I have TCS tripple rate remote rezzies on my Z...and im very very happy with what i have now!!!! icon_cool.gif

p.s. like u...i mostly ride desert icon_wink.gif

Well you have seen my setup, and it works really well for me, I did get some more travel that what I had but I am not sure if it is as much as you are looking for, I also just finished putting on my +4 swingarm today, so I will be testing it out this weekend.

Are you looking for just the front or front and rear? If you just want the front, make sure you have a new axel in your budget for the rear, I put my new a arms on the front and the quad looked so stupid with the stock axel so I had to widen it 4" with a durablue axel, balanced out the bike really well, if you want more details on exactly what I have and how much it cost me, let me know, remember all my stuff is chrome, so paint will lower the price quite a bit.

When are you heading out again, would like to hook up with you guys, we all had a good time, we are going to gordons again this weekend, same spot, just my bro and I, so it would be nice to hook up with some more people.

Later,

Ian

ian i wish i was heading out this weekend but its superbowl weekend for us but the weekend after that we plan on heading to gordons.

far as a rear axle i was gonna go with a durablue or something in that neighborhood. but i was focusing on the front end frist. then a new or revalved shock will be in line with a wider axle. i was gonna go with a longer swing arm but i like to ride wheelies and my bike doesnt have alot of power to need a swingarm yet. if i was i would go only 1 or 2 inches over stock nothing crazy cuz i want to jump with no worries.

i am hoping i have a budget of $1500 to $2000 when i go to buy so something in that range should be close to good for me. ive drooled over duncans suspension but i know i wont be able to afford it or if so it wont be for a few months or longer when i get my tax return.

on a rear shocl for thos ewho know can you get your stock one revalved and get new springs on it to make it into a dual rate shock or would it be easier/ cheapier to get a new dual rate shock?

BaNsHeE350
for right around $2000 you could have a Gibson or Houser LT front end with Elkas

yes...most companies rebuild stock rear shocks. TCS did mine.

as far as goin for dual rate rear shocks...thats a tricky situation!!

the linkage on the rear adds the same effect as dual or tripple rate springs. it (the linkage) varries the effect the spring has on the swing arm! so when you add variable rate springs...to variable a variable rate linkage...your gettin into a very sophisticated situation!!!

When I was looking at getting my new swingarm to revalve stock shock was about three bills, and new shocks range from high 5's on up, my wife actually bought me my swingarm, shock and chain for Xmas so she just got the whole new package, the shock is a works quadsport made to my weight, it is a really stout shock, the rod is really thick, and it is actually an edlbach (sp) spring, cant wait to try it, I figured +4 would still be ok, for the riding I do, and I should still be able to get the front end up at will, its the accidental wheelies I hate, every time I get to the top of a dune I have to completely let off the gas or I am on my back, so it should help, I hope, it would suck to spend all that money and it not make a difference, but at least it looks cool, I may try and get out the weekend after next, we are going out for prez. day, so if I did that would make 3 weeks in a row, gotta work overtime to do the house chores before I pull that off, but i will try, I will keep in touch, later, Ian
