Why isn't there a service manual for a md4s-2d transaxle? I want to tear down my own tranny, but there isn't a service manual. Can I call and get specs? End plays, pinion depths ect.??? Are they the same as a type 1 gear set and type 2 for the ring and pinion? I want to do it myself

Mick, Go for it! YOU may call me and I will step by step tell you anything you would, and will need to know.
Warning!!!!!!!!! IF YOU HAVE NEVER BUILT AT LEAST (3) TYPE 1'S OR ANY BUS/PORSCHE STYLE GEAR BOX THEN YOU WILL HAVE A LEARNING CURVE.
call Weddle eng. 1-805-562-8600 ask them about the VW tools you will need and invest in those tools.
Buy a Chiltons manuel, an Idiots guide and any other source to rebuild a VW/Porsche Gearbox READ it front to back.
Then find a core type 1 VW to practice on.
Good luck.

I have already ordered both CD's from here
They also have the tools and jigs but I will call Weddle to get mendeola specific tools
I'll try and call you sometime today
Thanks

Those CD's look pretty detailed!

But is it worth it to do it yourself? After buying the CD's and special tools (what do the tools cost?) isn't labor on a trans rebuild in the 300-400 range to have an expert do it?

It's not about cost........I just want to be able to do it myself
Theres nothing wrong with my tranny now.....but when it's time to freshin it up, I want to be able to do it myself. If I freshen it up twice, I save money. If I was ever to break it, my turn around time would be awesome!!! laughing.gif

BTW......whats the inner shaft???
Mick
Thanks for all the info Ian!!! With all the info it looks like a walk in the park!!!
