What is the law on taking pieces from a plane wreck site. A buddy says that a BLM archeologist told him they are" protected as historical items" What say you.

Lets theoretically say you find an airplane wreck in the dunes and some parts are exposed after recent storms. What is the law on taking those. A buddy says that a BLM archeologist told him they are" protected as historical items" What say you.
It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.........I promise to send you a car package when you are in prison for taking the parts.

I say leave it as part of Glamis history if you are just looking for stuff to hang in your garage.

The reason I ask is we found a crash site last week and with GPS it is easy to go back to the site that is spread over several small dunes. (At least 4 small dunes and valleys) This site could get looted easily if found. Some parts showed repairs so we are thinking some sort of drone for target practice or??? My buddy says maybe even an F4. Dont know much about planes but if it is a jet that would be pretty cool. We found dates of 1962 and 1968 on some of the parts. I will post some pics from my daughters camera later when she gets home with it. You airplane junkies will probably be able to tell us what this is. If you know where this site is please do not post the location on the forum. I just talked to my buddy and BLM and/or the historical society will go out and inspect and catalog the site. Whats really cool is there are mostly small to medium pieces up to 6 feet across showing on the surface but there may be larger chunks under the sand buried.

My buddy was down the day before Christmas and we arrived Sunday the 27th. He told me about this cool crash site he found and it took until the day before we left to go check it out. (Jan 1st)
Lets go!! We had quite a posse

I smell a practical joke. If this "plane crash" was in Glamis a lot of us would have heard of it by now. There is a plane crash site but it is MUCH different than what you describe. If I'm wrong then cool, I will learn something new, but I smell a joke.

Ummmm ..................................
Well ...........................................
Its real !! The debris is strewn over 50 to 100 yards and basically in 4 flat areas. I would bet money there are larger pieces buried deep in the sand. This is the first wreckage we came to. Lots of wires and some going down into the sand.

This isn't a joke...we found it while riding one day. After we went back to study it more, we found some parts with McDonnell Aircraft on it (I used to work there, way back when).
My guess is a QF-4 target drone. They made them out of old worn-out F4 Phantoms by putting in remote-control so they could fly it from the ground. Probably lost control of it over the Proving Grounds or even from Goldwater Range in AZ. The only difference is that the paint scheme on the crash site is olive drab not the gray/red of the picture.

we found some parts with really hokey patches on them, just enough to get it airborne again is my guess. Fan discs, lots of fragments. It must have been really moving when it hit because most everything looks like accordion parts!
I'll post pix later, once the BLM historian has had time to visit and catalog the site. Mine have GPS tags on them from my phone.

the plane crash site was also not in the 60's either. it was about mid 90's if i can rermember right. and yes it is in the closed off section. also the plane was a personal plane not any kind of fighter plane.

Jan 5 2009, 07:58 PM
This is the largest piece and was in site 4. We think it may have been hydraulics for the landing gear. The close ups are showing a date of 1962 but you may not be able to see it. To me it looks like 1959 in the pics but in person it was 1962. Also a couple of pics showing wheels and cables to operate something.

Very very cool! Trash is trash and you would be doing a great service to get any of it out of the dunes. I don't know if that would be the official stance of the BLM but whomever owned the plane left its remains there so finders keepers I say.
Military aircraft are often coated olive drab on the inside of the fuselage. It keeps the aluminum, magnesium, and other iums from oxidizing. I hope you kept that counter wheel. That would be a great little momento and I think you have a few of the old timers here salivating on how to get the cordinates from you.

This was also very cool and from I think site 3. It is a very very thing metal in a honeycomb shape and we assumed maybe a heat shield around an engine.

The last pics show a part made from cast or forged aluminum. Looks to actuate the ailerons or flaps maybe. I don't know about all the screws. I'm not familiar enough with military aircraft to know if the fighters were riveted or screwed there.

A set of pedals with some nice hand tig welding work in it. The foot pad was blacker than the back side leading to the conclusion that maybe rubber was on the front side and burned off it the wreck.

Is that two sets of two pedals? If so, then it's likely not a military jet, at least not a fighter (there's only one I'm aware of that seats the crew side by side, that's the F-111). Maybe a helicopter (Mac, whattaya think)? The rest of the hardware looks too heavy-duty for general aviation.
Very very very cool. I'd love to get coordinates if you're willing to share.

a-6 sat side by side. there are ALOT of crash sites in that general area. i've found 3-4 in the vinegar wash/millpitas wash area. there was an f-18 that crashed out there a few years ago and they never found it. we did find an a-6 canopy on a trail in the chocolate mountains about 20 miles to the east/northeast of that crash site. odds are you do some research on the net you can find info on your crash site. there used to be a website with gps coordinates to thousands of crash sites in southern california.
we found a piper cub chassis burned up out in glamis one year. its way under the sand now.
