Full Version: Transmission Issue... Won't Go Into 2nd Gear
GlamisDunes.com > Sandrail Forums > Sandrail Tech
WHAT'S NEXT?
The car is a 4 seater S&S with a 2d transmission. I spent 6 days at Dumont over New Years. On our last day there I was having problems getting the car to get into 2nd gear. All the other gears work perfect. No noise from transmission, nothing. I have had the car for 2 years and never had one issue. I brought the car to Noma Fab to have the tranny taken out and brought to Jeff Fields. The tranny is there now. Does anybody want to take a guess as to what the issue is? I should know in 1-2 days. -Justin

I dont really want to say this but I think its because you drive to slow. HAHA just kidding. can you hold it in 2nd or does it not go in at all?
Ocotillo Boy
I'll take a guess. Your shifter went out of adjustment. Hopefully for you I'm correct.

Combination of worn (compressed) throwout bearing and shifter throw adjustment. Was clutch feeling heavy to depress? I'm waiting for my diagnosis on my own 2d. 2nd gear also.
JDMeister
The most common problem is, a power shift from 1st to 2nd, and that jams the shift forks.. No more second gear..

I'm just sayin'...

Clutch felt normal, just on a run went to shift into 2nd and it would not go.

Your tranny is no good you should just give it to me. I hope they dont find anything wrong and it is just the shifter out of ajustment. That would be the cheapest fix.
HDWRENCH
Sounds like you broke the shift fork , easy to check that.
wild1s
First off you took it to the wrong place, you should have taken it to the Wright Gear Box and got a deal on your fix. Just given you a hard time . Good luck and I hope it is not to bad.

I was thinking I bent a fork or something along those lines also. Maybe a bad syncro? It has been 2.5 years so I figure its time for a check up anyway. Plus the car is still for sale and I dont want the next owner to have any problems. Now the car will have a fresh tranny in it.

Jeff Fields is 7 miles from my house and 5 blocks from the shop where my car is at. It was way closer.

My car did this too, but it was just the slave cylinder for the clutch was out of adjustment. Did you check that?>

They checked that before they pulled the tranny out. It was good.
Fireman
any news yet on what broke?

I talked to the guys at Transaxle today and it didn't seem too bad...actually a problem with 3rd gear was worse than the problem with 2nd.

I'll let What's Next fill in the details once he gets them.

I got it....its not the tranny its the s&s car..... HAha... icon_biggrin.gif

drummer.gif Well here goes... The main problem from what I understand was with third gear. It appears that the weld on the shift rod in the tranny broke that holds third gear. Also the shift forks were bent which was why It didnt go into 2nd. He also noticed that it looked like the bolts that hold the bell housing in place and some point and time were loose and oblonged the holes in the bell housing. The clutch looked like it was starting to wear so i'm going to replace it with a dual disk Kennedy clutch and a new Fly wheel. I am also going to replace the reverse gear with a newer gear, complete service on the tranny, seals, fluid, the works.
So in the end new clutch, flywheel, bell housing, reverse gear, full tranny service, new 3rd gear, and new shift fork.

Not bad for no service for 2 years + 25cheers.gif
What disc does it have now?
Why will you be going to a dual disc?

Why will you be going to a dual disc?

I'm not sure what clutch and flywheel is in it now but it was some off brand. I'm going with the dual disc for the holding power. The car has a 550hp LS-1 in it. From what I understand it will suite my application better than the single disc.
ahipara 55
550 hp says it all.

I must not be understandin somethin. one shift fork controls the slider for first and second. the other shift fork does 3rd and 4th. (reverse is by itself) How did a bent shifter eff up third if second was the one that wouldn't go into gear??? No shift rods hold any gear........shift rods connect to the shift forks which connect to the sliders. Sounds like the hip bone is connected to the.....oh, never mind!!! laughing.gif

I'm with Mick, I don't see the correlation with 2nd and 3rd gear problems, but maybe it got lost in translation.

Why are you replacing the bellhousing? It can be repaired. Have him put some bushings or steel sleeves into the bolt holes.
woodster
Also be careful with the dual disc setup in a 2d. Might be a little to much clutch for that tranny.

I dont want to mickey mouse the housing he said it was pretty worn, for $400.00 bucks ill just replace it. As for as the 3rd gear issue i'm sure it did get lost in translation, I'm not all that mechanical. I trust Jeff Fields and Noma Fabrication and if this is what they recommend than that is what I will do. I dont want to have any problems with the transmission or the next person I sell the car to. This way I just replace it all and I can feel good about selling it to any board member on here knowing it was done right.

Besides all that I bet his wife makes alot of money. Good thing she doesnt want a new diamond or something.

Another update... yay.gif

I just got a call from Jeff. He contacted Weddle and told them my situation about 3rd gear and Weddle said no problem they will warranty the gear out for me. I did not ask for any warranty assistance Jeff took it upon him self to do this. I had already given him the ok to replace the gear. He could have still charged me for it and I would have never known. Kudos to Jeff Fields for being a honest person and business owner. He now has a customer for life!!
