I've never used a twist on my 3 wheeler but considering it on the new YFZ450.
Any thoughts

You'll probably like it more assuming you get used to it. My thumb would always get tired real quick with the thumb throttles. I probably wouldnt go back to thumb anymore. It feels a lot more controllable.

Ipersonally like the twist throttles...thare much better than the thumb, your thumb usually gets tired to quick, and you don't want to start cramping up when you are out on a long ride. I have Motion Pro on both of my quads.....I think you will like it too!!

id rode with one of my old bikes a while back and it does take some gettin use to but once you do it becomes second nature to ya. i personally like/dont mind thumb throttle. i priced it on my banshee and it wasnt worth tryin to swap it over when its not gonna give me a power gain. maybe if i go to bigger carbs or something ill think about it.

It kinda depends on your riding style. During a long ride, yes a thumb throttle will fatigue you. But, when riding a quad aggresively, you have to use alot of counter-active body english and are often not in the best postion behind the bars. Unlike a bike were you lean to make alot of the turning motion, a quad requires handlebar movement to turn it. (Ok, so a little english and ample amounts of throttle can be used when turning a quad too, but I'm trying to keep it simplistic.) Being out of position from the bars (leaning off the side of the quad) and trying to manipulate a twist throttle is not the best scenario alot of times. So to make a short story long, a thumb can be easier and safer at times than a twist.

"My thumb gets tired!"
What a bunch of girls...
You guys need to ride more if that's the case. My thumb hasn't been tired for 17 years. It used to get to the point where I'd have to use the other hand to hit the throttle, now I can ride all day. Only way that happened was cause I had an older brother who didn't want me to ruin his rides... make the thumb bulletproof or don't go riding anymore. Hmmm?
I personally think twist throttles are unsafe on big bikes. At some point in time, you may slip and the bike is going to go, "brrrrrrp" and out of your possession. Happens all the time on the 50 (well, it did) and it just makes me laugh. If that happened on the 250R... I'd be hurtin. When the thumb on the 250R gets out of control and I just let off and grab the bars.

Personally I can’t stand thumb throttles.

The original length of handlebars, weather stock or aftermarket, should just be a starting point. Find what length works for your own person arm length and trim the bars to suite.
If you can’t comfortably control the throttle in a hard turn, trim the bars or grow longer arms. . .whatever is easier for you.

You say that and then you say you don’t have the strength to control the twist throttle on a 50!

You can't grip a quad with your legs like you can on a bike. I found the twist made me hold on to the bars differently and I was less comfortable with that, than I was with having to use my thumb and being able to hold on to the quad.
Do what ever feels best for you and enjoy.

Its just me BUT!!!!!!!!
I am much too busy just trying to hang on to use a twist. I can manipulate the thumb no matter how tight I am hanging on whereas with the twist if you pull a massive wheely and are hanging off the back you are either hanging on with one hand or your twisting the throttle wide open.

It is a thumb for me!!

I am way more comfortable with thumb than twist, you just arent riding enough if your thumb is sore, strengthen it up, go ride...lol, my bro complained alot about the thumb throttle on his new YFZ, he got the answer with "do you want to go back to riding the warrior?" lol.. seriously it loosened up and he is fine now, I cant stand going over whoops with a twist, or that unexpected drop off... thumb is more controllable over rough terrain on a quad.. that is my 2 cents
I also have a streetbike, so of course that is twist so I am used to using one, I just plain dont like twist in the desert...
hope it helped.

a thumb is alot easier to control. I would suggest it for aggressive riding. Twists can be dangerous especially when getting a little air. Personally I would stick with the stock thumber. Cascade makes a different throttle lever that is longer and smoother. On a banshee I would say twist because the throttle is stiff as hell. On the YZF your throttle is pretty smooth and the only fatigue you should get from that bike is on your a$$ because that seat is hard as a rock.

Feb 11 2004, 10:05 PM
Buy a nice cascade or moose racing thumb throttle, the levers are longer and are easier to push, twist throttle sucks when you are leaning back or going through the whoops

I have a banshee and put the twist on it. At first I had to get used to going through the woops but got used to it and love it now. I have not had any problems with it over jumps or whoops once you get used to it. I have riden dirt and street bikes so it is more comfortable to me. Good luck on your decision.

I've rode friends' quads with twist, and I just prefer the thumb on a quad, for reasons mentioned above (like how your body and arm position varies a lot more than on a cycle). And if you're getting throttle thumb, you're not riding enough. Learn to deal with it for a few weekends and it'll be gone. I have a metal piece that slides over my throttle that greatly enlarges the thumb area, giving you more angles to come at it with and more leverage. It came from Alba's and was really expensive (I think like $45). I would have never paid that much for a little hunk of aluminum, but the guy who owned the bike before me did and it makes a difference. JMHO.

The thumb fatigue things not a prob for me, i'm very used to it.....That's all i have ever used. The only other thing i hate when riding is when ARM PUMP sets in....thats gotta be the worst
All the posts add up to making alot of sense...gonna stick with thumb

you guys suck! Now I'm having second thoughts about using the twist throttle on my Raptor! I ordered it the first day I had the quad thinking that the thumb thing sucks. I still have not put it on though(been a year) I've never really had any "thumb issues" .
I've always had twisties (even on the Jet-ski) with everything I've owned.
hmmm maybe I can put the thumb throttle on my CBR.....

929.....No sh!t eh....just when you've made the decision and ya figure you'd get a few opinions from the G.Com folks before doing it......................DOH!!
I don't know about you but i for one take there advice seriously and have made 3 decisions based on the advice of these Moofers
1) buying a YFZ450
2) Staying with thumb
3) I don't drink light

.....I have raced two wheelers my entire life. So by nature I am a twist guy. However, with a quad I prefer the thumb. It allows me to hang on better with both hands. You use less of your upper body to control the throttle input so if I am on a rampage through the small dunes, or ripping up The Pumpkin Patch Trail at Ocotillo the extra mobility is devoted to manuvering the machine.
.....If your thumb get sore, that just means you're not riding enough.
