I ordered an iPhone 3g the other day and it just arrived in the mail. I was curious as to what apps seemed to work well for users out there. I havent gotten to monkey with it yet because I didnt have a Vista 64 compatible iTunes (downloading now). Guess the phone gets it's first strike for that, I effin hate iTunes (has to be activated through iTunes).
I'll continue to update the 1st post as kick (_|_) applications are found. Here is a list of my favorites so far.
Pandora (thanks for the recommendation on this!)
Call a Cab (a freebie that works very well in my area)
iHandy Level (this thing works awesome; want to find the angle on your CVs...)

Best cell phone yet. I've tested a lot through work. I had to "modify" it a bit to work how I wanted it to but I'm really happy with it. I use it for work stuff mostly....oh and solitare.

I had the original, now I have the 3G. I didn't like the original to much as it always froze and didn't do what I wanted it to. I tried out a blackberry but didn't like it so I got the 3G. I like it so far. It doesn't freeze as much. I'm big into music and have the "shazam" app. You hold your iphone up th the speakers of you car or whatever and in about 20 seconds it will tell you what song your listening too. Also "uno" the card game is pretty cool. Word Search and of course the iHandy level. I've read a lot about people hacking them to change the appearance and what not. I haven't bothered with that but you can do a whole lot with it.

I'll have it cracked in the next week (going to Indiana next week so it might have to wait until I get back) or so. I bought it because it will replace my GPS, current phone, and my iPod. It will do just about anything else you can think of as well.

In many cases, yes. But many companies really don't care (seriously). Some companies have monthly cell bills above $50,000 and give their employees WHATEVER they ask for (no kidding).

And you're also limited to GSM providers; in America, this would be AT&T, T Mobile, and Alltel (and a couple small ones). Sprint and Verizon use CDMA architecture (ie no iPhone). Apple did this because GSM is a world service where CDMA is a North American architecture.

I have the original and hate the thing. Can you send and receive pic's via text with the 3G. Is the internet fast? The original is so slow it makes me long for the days of dial up. Did they improve the ringer on the 3G as the original at full volume can’t be heard from a shirt pocket?
madweazl
Mar 4 2009, 08:38 PM
The iPhone 3g uses, well, 3g. This is the fastest mobile internet solution available in the US. I believe the pics are still limited to email. The ringer is acceptable (and improved from the previous from what I've read).

Be sure if you do hack it, not to change the apple icon to the pineapple if you PWN it. If you change it and it crashes because you did something wrong or the 3rd party app wasn't stable, its BRICKED in the truest sense, and you can't return it to apple because the pineapple will display and they know you violated the user agreement BS.
I use mine for a lot of medical stuff. There are a ton of free apps that are priceless to me in my job. My favorite is a pH interpreter, while I know all that stuff off my head its hard to memorize the anion gap info.
Not being able to get picture txts is frustrating, but the apps I use daily make up for it too.
Oh, and if you use AIM, Yahoo, etc, BeeJive is awesome. It is a more expensive app out there, but its the only one that keeps you logged on if you switch between apps.

No, the pics and videos are still limited to the e-mail. You think Apple would have figured that out when they made the 3G, but they didn't. The ringer thing has been fixed but I find myself accidently turning it down a lot. The internet is a lot faster. I'm able to surf gd.com quite faster and with less safari shut downs. I wish you could download firefox on it though as I use that on my apple laptops and love it.

Ive had my 3g since october and I love it. it does have a couple downfalls as stated but overall I am very happy with it. The signal is hit or miss in the washes for some reason. Over Halloween '08, I got perfect signal from Wash 10 but I couldn't manage 1 bar when I stayed in the Compound over Thanksgiving. Well I think this topic started as an app suggestion so here is what I have and 99% of them are free because yes I am that cheap.
Bloomberg mobile
Pandora radio-beats the hell out of sirius and its free
Shazam-great for ID'ing music
iWant-great for finding bars, resturants and shopping in new areas
bigoven-great for recipes
Rowmote-if you have mac computers this allows your iphone to control everything from iTunes to front row, but it cost .99
Those are my favorites. Other than that I have had 0 problems with the phone and calling as well as reception. The pic text thing sucks but I know the upper end blackberrys have gone to the same system

on Pandora all you do is touch at the bottom where it says new station and then enter an artist or a song and it will play songs continuously for you that are like the artist or song you selected. awesome app imo
