Hi,
Almost a year to the day, nearly the identical spot, somebody drove off the top of a bowl near the Buttercup keyhole area. Same result - broken neck, body bag ride to the morgue.
I saw this guy riding that day, out of control, randomly zipping around a fairly treacherous area. The pain of losing someone...we could hear a woman weeping uncontrollably after the chopper left. Just breaks my heart...
BP agent told us he didn't make it, dead at the scene, the chopper went out empty....

PLEASE, if you are new to the dunes, get hooked up with experienced riders!

you can see in the background where the accident was -- where all the bikes & trucks are. Just a few yards from his camp!

Oh man! My whole group was near the top of Test Hill on the other side of the freeway and first saw the Ambulance get off the freeway, them the Chopper come in. That's when that eerie feeling hits, and you say a little something for the victim and their family. I will forward this to my friends. So sad.......BE CAREFUL AND TEACH OTHERS TOO!

That sucks, my heart goes out to the family. That is very near where I waded up my rail earlier this season. Lots of tall, steep slopes and witches eyes in that area. I never leave the ground in my rail in a spot that I haven't pre-driven now. Look before you leap... Let this man's costly mistake be a leason for the rest of us.

If that is the spot I think it is I've seen two people get hurt real bad in that witches eye there.
RIP fellow duner.

Witches eyes everywhere in Buttercup.

Wow! How sad, but to hear that there are alot of witches eyes there suprises me. We were there in October and the dunes were great, they justed rolled and rolled and rolled. Maybe cause we were at Gordons? Other side of the highway? Can the dunes be that different?
RIP to my fellow duner and God bless his family.

IMO not much different than anywhere else. Just that this spot is particularly tricky because it looks like the "sand highway" continues but it's an illusion ... there is a dropoff of about 50 feet into a bowl and then a slow rise back to about the same height so from the top side, especially to a rookie it looks like it just continues. Whoops, nothing but air....
Main lesson is go with someone who is experienced at reading the dunes, even that doesn't guarantee much but at least they hit it first...

So things never change. Saw the aftermath and my first fatality at that exact same spot(if its the one I am thinking of just next to the cul d sac) almost 15 years ago. guy on a dirt bike went off the top of a big drop off and then he was gone. Very sad and my heart goes out to the family.

Not allot of witches eyes by the drags (sand highway) at Gordons. I don't think there are any. The big danger over there is the sand highway ends at a VERY steep and tall dune that goes straight into the canal!

Sad stuff. This is why I tell everyone I go with, that is new, that they need to treat every hill like it has a 100' drop on the other side. RIP fellow duner.

err...uhhh.....what used to be a canal. well i guess it's still a canal just no water in it. we were riding in it last weekend. came accross a buggy that was upside down and burried in what used to be the muck in the bottom. someone found out the hard way where sand hiway ends. hope they survived that one.
RIP to the fellow duner at Buttercup.

This case was just south of the cul-de-sac at Buttercup..... Maybe 150' from some of the camps sites.... Two steep drop offs along that rigde...
