the 250r quad? ok.... few questions..... how old are you? how tall/ what do you weigh? do you plan on tearing through the dunes? is it for you wife/girl friend? because if you are an average size guy older than 12 your not gonna have the power u need to climb any dunes..... im in the market for a quad also but for my girl and after a trip or 2 she wouldnt enjoy the power of a 250...... im getting a deal on a raptor but like most will say here... and i rode one and my girl rode it also.... the 400ex is a very very nice bike. buy it once and be happy other than buying something and getting bored with it 2 trips down the road. good luck.

I am 6'2 and about 215 pounds and I used to ride a stock 87 LT250 through the dunes. It made it up any dune I wanted to go up and I had a blast on that thing, although it does lack power compared to other bikes. The suspension is pretty good for how old they are and power upgrades are pretty easy to do. Best of all, they are pretty cheap to get. I would suggest a 90', 91', or 92'.

I HAD AN 89 THAT GOT STOLEN A YEAR AGO AND LET ME TELL YOU PEOPLE COULD NOT BELEIVE HOW FAST IT WAS THEY THOUGHT IT HAD A 500 IN A
250 FRAME. THEY ARE VERY CHEAP BUT STAY AWAY FROM THE 86 TO 88 YEARS
BECAUSE THEY DID NOT HAVE THE POWERVALVE WHICH MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE. AS FAR AS MOTOR WORK I TOOK MINE TO CT AND HAD THEM PORT
AND POLISH IT ALSO SWITCHED THE PISTON TO A FLAT TOP FOR HIGHER COMPRESSION AND PUT A 38 FLAT SLIDE CARB WITH OPEN K&N AND RAN 110 RACE GAS AND BELEIVE ME THAT THING PUT A LOT OF 250R HONDA AND EVEN PIPED BANSHEES TO SHAME. I ALSO ADDED A BILLS PIPE WITH NEW SILENCER.
I REALLY MISS THAT BIKE AND ALL TOGETHER COST ME LESS THAN 3500 TO BUILD IT AND SHE LOOKED GOOD TO.
I used to ride one when I first started going out to Glamis. It belonged to my Fiance's parents. It was a good quad. I don't remember them ever doing anything to their Suzuki's. I'm not even sure if they ever cleaned the air filters or changed the oil on those things. But those two Lt's that they had just kept running, never left any of us stranded. I weighed about 210 at the time and I am 6'1. I always made it up all the hills.

I was just about to comment on your post until I saw this one.

The LT250 I had was just a tiny bit faster than my buddies 250trx. Both stock. It would smoke the 400EX's with no problem. If you get a good deal on the LT I'd get it if I were you. They're not bad bikes. Just alot of die hard honda and yamaha fans around this board. Get whatever you want. Thats why I still ride Suzuki and Kawasaki regardless of what people say.

that would be a great *project* bike! if you get a good deal...snag it!! the only weak point is the frame (suprise!)

As far a power goes...it should/could have all that youll need.

I really dislike LT250's... I rode an 87 LT 250 before and all i can say is that thing vibrates too much and just isn't fun.. not enough power for me. IMO get the newer 91's or whichever so you can pipe them and get stuff done to them.. or move to a trx

i bought a 85' lt250r and rebuilt the motor from the ground up. the bike was a buddies of mine so i got it for $300 cuz the motor was crap. it cost me an additional $1k to get the motor completely redone including the tranny. the bad part is that alot of the tranny parts are not being made anymore along with aftermarket parts. i had no real 5th gear when i was done with it cuz i think the fit up a dirtbike gear and it seemed like a really long 5th gear. as far as the power is concerned i was happy with it. yeah its not the fastest thing out there but it got my butt up and hill i wanted it to.
now i bought and built the bike for a total of $1600 and rode it for a year and sold it for $2100. so they are farely cheap but always think about this the older they are the harder it will be to get parts for. so id stay away from the 85' cuz this was the first year they came out. go with something in the early 90's.
good luck and enjoy.

p.s. when i built the bike it was so dialed in that i never had a problem working on it. the damn thing didnt need anything done and i rode the crap out of it.

I had an 86 and 87. I'm almost positive the 87 had a power valve but the 86 or older didnt. Stay away from 86 or 85 they just cant keep up with the 87 or newer. I had a stage 4 motor and all the goodies and I would beat just about anybody in the same class and it was reliable as hell. I tryed to kill it before I sold it and could'nt.

87 or later. The 85-86 was a different bike in a number of ways. Speed wise it was the second fastest 250 in the sand behind the Tecate 4.
I'm 220 pounds and I fly up any hill.
You see a lot of them in Glamis.
