Nightmare
My wife and I purchased two new Suzuki Quads in January 2007.
My bike - 2006 LTR450
Wife bike - 2007 Z400
Right after we got the bikes she found out that she was pregnant. Long story short, we haven't ridden much in the last 2 years.

My bike has about 2-3 tanks of gas run through it and her bike has less than 2 tanks. The dealership wanted to perform an oil change and some other service after about 2 tanks.

We want to go riding somewhere close by in the next couple days.

What should I do? What important service needs to be performed on the bikes?

- take out the bikes for the day and service them after
- take the bikes in for a full service
- change the oil and filter myself and complete the full service later

I'm surprised how well the batteries are doing on the bikes, they both start up fine every 3-4 months when I've had a chance to ride near my house.

We don't have the sand tires yet, so I think we might run over to Ocotillo Wells (150 miles) or up Calico Ghost Town area (102 miles). Is there somewhere else near Riverside to run for the day?

Thanks

Very important to change the oil and oil filter. Any debris left from machining and assembly will be caught in the oil filter or suspensded in the oil. Clean the air filters. You should do this almost every weekend out anyway. Cleaning the air filter will go the longest as far as reliability.

The dealership will also inspect the spark plug for the proper color and torque all major nuts and bolts, especially the head nuts. You will be fine with just the oil and oil filter change and cleaning the air filter.

Change the oil and filter, clean and oil the air filter, oil the chain and ride those quads. You are fine. I wouldn't take them to the dealer until your ready for a valve adjustment.
Nightmare
I changed the oil and filter on the 450 (I followed SandJunkie's guide on ltr450hq)
I aired up all the tires to 7 psi (Calico was mostly hard packed desert)
I cleaned and lubed both chains
I'll need to search on how to clean the foam filters.

It was a short day yesterday. We got a late start and the wind kicked up at about 5:00pm. I'd guess we rode for about 3.5 hours.

I'm in Riverside (92503).

I thought that the dealer wanted to check something specific on the 450 after the first two tanks. Might have been the valves.

I use no-toil foam filter oil and cleaner, it is biodegradable, so you can clean them right in the sink, and it is made of vegetable oil. You'll have to use normal filter cleaner or gas(carefully) to get the factory oil off first though. Another good thing to do on a new bike of any kind is to grease all the bearings in the a-arms,and swingarm, including the shock mounts. This is some work, but the factory just dabs a tiny bit of grease in there, not nearly enough to protect the bearings.

I'd get the valves adjusted.
