Wll, I just took my top end apart on my wheeler. I seized it up the first ride last weekend

.
The good news is there is no damage to the bottom end or the crank, the cylinder is pretty scarred up in 2 places. The piston is whole, so no pieces went into the bottom. I just took the cylinder up to Allen Fox to bore it and fit it for a piston. Thank God for not too much $$$ I will be up and rolling for our next trip March 13

So I bet you rode Carries banshee around all weekend didn't you! The Yamaha saved you ass again!

Sorry man, I hadn't done that in a while. You'll understand.

You know when they built those three wheelers, they put the wheelie bar on the wrong end right?

I rode another banshee around last weekend and it was having problems before I even got on it Ben

. I also rode a 3000EX and had a blast. Thank God for good friends with extra bikes
Chum, he is just boring it for me. I am doing the top end myself this time

If I were you I would use an air compressor to blow any residues inside the cases.
My top end was damaged and never bother to check the bottom since it looked good. But some metal shavings made their way down under the crank, and the crank stop me like a brick wall.
I guess your piston looks like this......

Damn, that must've been one hell of quad!

So how much power does that 3 liter engine put out?

Sandpusher, my piston only had some high wear marks on 2 sides (no holes). Thanks for the tip, I was already planning on blowing it out and flushing it

You have an easy job then if you only do the top end.
I've done my top end several times myself, I just hate to wait weeks for someone else to do it.
My piston was puncture like that for 2 reasons:
I am supposed to use 108 octane or higher (according to LRD), and
My jets were too lean in my carb.
Good Luck Ride Red and on 3

Thanks SP, I got lucky. I was 5th gear pinned on a bowl, thought for sure it was a lot of damage

Update..
Well, I put her all back together this past weekend. She started right up and sounds nice. My builder said it got lean somehow, so I richened her up. I am hopefullly going to break it in next weekend, then it is on to G on March 12

Check your float level and change your inline filter if you have one. Any significant loss of gas in your bowl may cause a sudden lean condition, especially if you're hard on it for any length of time. When I'm on a good climb or fast run I make a practice of backing off the throttle momentarily to let the bowl fill...just in case!!

I checked the floats and they were within specs. No inline filter, but i checked and cleaned the filter in the tank. I don't want to take any chances. I usually run my stuff richer than I have to, so I am surprised it leaned out somehow.

That's the good thing about them trik's....easy to rebuild and parts by the millions....cheap too. I have 3 85 250R's, 2 complete bikes and one is now a parts bike.......gonna miss them when i buy the new yfz....
