Truck Guy,
What is the measurment from the ground to the top of your truck bed BEFORE you hitch up your trailer?

I am getting ready to buy a new trailer and I really want a 5th wheel but I'm worried I won't be able to tow it because of the height of my truck and the weight of the trailer.
I've got a 2004 Duramax 2500HD , chipped, with a 12" lift and 38" Toyo tires. The truck is a Long Bed so I was told that helps. dunno though. What's your trailer weigh dry?

ok its not on the flattest of ground but its like 5-8 or 5-10

Ok, I just checked mine and the tires are rated at - Load Range "D" for 3965 Lbs per tire. and the bed height is right about 5' 8-3/4". So all you did is flip your axles on your trailer? What's your trailer weigh dry and about what's it weigh loaded with ?? I'm guessing a sandrail from your aviator.
Thanks!!!

Well Robert I don't know how much taller you want me to lift it... That was how our conversation started after he told me he "flipped" the axles....LOL So we went another 5". Now your riding level and the running gear isn't getting "beat" any more. Talk about Attitude... Still only 13'8" to the top of the A/C. Had to go to a "low pro" unite on the front! Enjoy!!! P.S. "Oldman" told me to post the pics... what he says goes! LOL

I dont want to burst any bubbles but I was told by the trailer sales people when I bought my toy box that they will not sell you a 5er if you come in with bigger tires than 35" So buy the trailer then lift truck. Its a liability thing im sure

I have a hard time dealing and rationalizing with dealerships ( sales ppl )...LOL When is the last time a sales person said "here is my cell # call me if you have any problems 24/7 and I will do all I can to help you out. Or better yet come out and help you fix it or fix it for ya?" I'm sure ther are a few out there.... at the same time I think you would hear something more like "well I would have to talk to the manufacture about that" 10 months later ... after you have already taken care of the issue yourself, they may call you back and offer to help pay for a small fraction of the issue... Lets be real about this.... as a matter of fact this could be a whole nother post!!! Sales vs Service. The never ending drama. For example they put HD shakel bolts on Roberts trailer an stock shakels. Bolts are to long and bottom out before they tighten down on the shackle. Problem??? YUP and a safty issue!!! I tryied to contact the dealer , the manufacture, frame company, and got nothing but the "run around" about it. Here is a pic to show what I'm talking about. Attitude is not the only one. They all have ther own issues. To belive a sales men?? Sorry, sour subject for me. I used to work for a dealership.. I don't now for a reason. OK I'm done now.... LOL

dam all these nice trucks!!! didnt think it was possible to tow with those kinds of lifts!
saychz316
here is my truck and trailer. f-350 srw 4" donahoe lift in front with a donahoe 4 link. no lift in the rear. 35" toyo at tires, stock ford wheels powder coated black. 10" clearance on the overhang, trailer axles "flipped". trailer is right at legal height. no issues. i will be getting a larger truck though in the future. this single rear wheel thing is not all its cracked up to be. definitely need to get an f-450 or larger truck. thinking of picking up a used semi thats been converted at this point...f-350 dually is what i should have bought at minimum, not an f-350 srw. only saving grace is i have e rated tires, with a 4080lb load capacity on them. tires are very stout, and hold up very well.

sorry, truck and trailer dirty for this shot....

8" lift, 37's on 22's Towing the CL40. You dont want to go more than 8".

If you lift it, you will spend a few thousand bucks bringing the power band back to stock.

* Flip Axles on trailer
* regear axle(front and back)
* traction bars
* Add bigger brakes(pre 2007 trucks)

I added triple disk converter, oversized pan to trans
Get some good gauges(pre 2007)

If you have the cash, and want a better look, it can be done with the right price.
You really dont need it if you have a newer truck, this way when something breaks its under warranty, Mines a 2003.

this is pretty much what i run,but i added airbags,never any issues,not to highjack this thread but since we are on this subject,how high can you go with a cab over camper? 10inch?

did you guys get another 5er? i thought you were still using bobs moho?

14'1" to the top of the ac. 8" lift-37" tires-20" rims.....TOWS VERY STABLE !!!! no matter want anyone says...drives like a locomotive-straight and steady. Ask anyone who has driven in it. It has 195 gallons of fresh water (3 x 65) also on the bottom of it.
AXLES flipped = 7 1/4" lift on the 5th wheel.

Now....the reason for this topic.........I was wondering how many trucks with lifts out there, 10 and 12" lifts and what combos they are running (37-40" tires).

Just some info for ya cause I'm a Rigger by trade.....

Cali legal height laws......

13'6" PERMANENT

14' TEMPORARY

ANYTHING over 14' is a PERMIT load

Just sayin cause it sounds BAD to me dunno.gif

Carry on.....back to topic.

hey OB you hooked me up with my second deck on my trailer and i think im around 12' or 13' what are the odds on finding an overpass or bridge under 14'

someone had flipped the axles on my sand piper- THat and used 5.5 inch tall perches with the wrong shackle or the wrong perch. THe brackets were pinched in and eventually failed and completely layed over. Fortunately i got it home without any problems. I ordered the correct brackets then boxed them as well as tied them together side to side.

there was a pic earlier of using tubing to lift the perches- Be carefull with that- I did a quick repair just for the weekend once i noticed i had a problem- I couldnt locate the correct perch bracket so i used a 4.5 inch perch with a 1/8th inch thick piece of rectangle tubing. No offroad just a quick hour tow and back to sacramento on the highway collapsed the 1x2 retangle tubing!

My trucks lifted 4 inches and on 37's tows fine and feels stable with these toyos- THe pro comps i had before were garbage.
I found a matching set of weld wheels at a garage sale but i havent looked into 17 inch trailer tires. That and i would have to have the rims narrowed as they are 10 wide now.

before

after

trailer stayed the same height but now its level without having the 5th wheel hitch maxed out hieght wise

urethane liner- we just started spraying it at the shop and I used my truck to practice and get a hang of the machine- If you like that check out this hummer we just did- we were able to create a ghost flame efect that you only see at certain angles

ok thread jack over

I run an 8" on a TT without any issues. One thing I see on a lot of these lifted trucks is that they seem to lack air bags and squat a bunch out back.
