We decided we weren't ready to put the toys away yet...so we decided to do something different and instead of our regular dry camping we reserved spot at the Blu-In RV Park. This is the way to play when it is getting hot in the desert!
Pulled into our spot and plugged in the TH then flipped on the A/C and it ran for the weekend, we took the toys out for early morning and afternoon / evening rides, then we spent the rest of the time with a cold refreshment by the Pool and Jacuzzi. We were the only two RV's in the park, so it was like a private resort for the weekend.
We are going to get one more trip in at the Blu-In before it gets "Way too hot."
The sites were huge 70'x30' so plenty of room for everything along with Full hook-ups Elect, Water, and sewer on every site. www.bluinrvpark.com
Now as nice as it was I might have made a mistake...because the girls liked it so much...I wonder how much of a fight it will be to get them to agree to dry camp next season???

It was right around $125 for the weeeked including the extra vechicle, people, and a dog. Worth every penny!
East of the Pool area they had 3 or 4 big fire pits, but I didn't ask if we could use a fire pit in our site...since it was so warm.

We've been waiting 2 years for Blu-Inn to open (or re-open?). We stayed at Leapin Lizard 3 years ago but couldn't get enough reservations for Thanksgiving for the last 2 years. Can't wait to get back out to Ocotillo!

My girl and I stayed there this weekend based on this thread and the desire to do something different. The wind was blowing pretty good but still an awesome weekend. The park host, Jeff, was really accomadating and even let us stay late Sunday to enjoy an afternoon ride and a dip in the pool afterword. Clean showers and bathrooms as well. Looking forward to going back!

Nov. 7th is going to be a fun weekend at the campground. We made reservations because of the Lost lizard fun run and the owner said there would be live music and group rides for people from the campground who would like to go.

I usualy go the same way with a 34' triple axle bumper pull without any problems. It gets narrow as you drop down into the desert but just watch for the rocks on your way back up the hill when your leaving. Some of them are right on the white line and I've seen a few trailers having to get help home because they ripped out an axle.
If you like the long way, head toward El Centro, and head north when you get to forester road (I think) Then when you get to the next little town and hiway, turn left and it fallows the bottom of saltin sea. You'll get to a border patrol check point that is at your next turn. That campsite is on your left side about 15 min.
It takes about an hour longer than the than going through Ramona, but my bestfriend HATES curves (not in his buggy) and goes this way. It takes a little over an hour once you get to ocotillo and superstision.
But do not take Banner grade from Julian, I tried that years ago with just a little 16' car hauler and it was a hard way to go. Your gps will send you that way. Turn at dudleys barkery for sure!
Good luck, sorry I dont pay attention to the hiway names, I'm just used to diving them. But I'm sure someone on here would love to give you better instrutions with road names.

Out of San Diego
Short Version.
67 to Romona, 67 turns into 78 in Romona. Then it is 78 to 79 to S2 back on to 78.
Long version.
67 out of San Diego all the way to Romona. 67 turns into 78 as you go straight thru Romona. Take that to St Ysabel (sp?) and turn left onto 79 (this is the turn at Dudley's). Follow that until you reach S2 and turn right (big power distribution staion on the corner). Follow S2 until until it ends. This will be the 78 again. Turn left. Follow that until you reach OW. It is that "Standard" way for people to get out to OW.
As for going the Banner grade. I have taken two with my 33" FW. Was'n't to bad. You just couldn't go 50. There are a couple of tight turns in there but nothing horrible. Just no straight aways that you can maintain any speed in. Good like and safe riding.

This place looks great. Never been to Occotillo before but we are making our first trip out for Halloween this year. Setting up camp with full hookups while the weather is still pretty toastie looks like the way to go. A dip in the pool after a nice long day of riding would be pretty tough to beat. I saw that this park is offroad friendly but is it within a reasonable riding distance of all the sights we'd like to see in Ocotillo?
BGYHLR
Oct 20 2009, 08:58 PM
Yes it is within reasonable distance from all the sites in Ocotillo Wells. We make the trip to the Blue-Inn regularly for the kids ice cream and the fries. The Blue-Inn is actually pretty central to all of the major spots in OW. Been going out there for 24 years so I know the place pretty well.
