What is the main differance from the 480c and the 540c in function? are they about the same, which has more to offer?

They are the same size. The 540 is a newer model with a few more functions. I believe they made some changes to the antenna on the newer units also. They are all now discontinued with the intro of the HD series. You can still find some at various retailers though. I am putting an Eagle in my truggy. I am currently working to supply 3 very well known builders with Eagle and Garmin because customers don't want to pay the extra $$$ for the Lowrance HD. I can however supply Lowrance also....
