I got to ride a whole whoppin 5 mins on a fresh top end, till the bike just plain shut down (yes the switch was on, yes there is fuel, etc). Did the spark test with the 'ol screwdriver in the cap.......nothing. My question is, how do you test the stator or the coil or ??without kicking it over? I dont want to waste the money on the process of elimination thing. Any suggestions? BTW its a '95 Banshee, I dont know how long the electrical generally lasts.

Follow the cables coming out of the stator. They usually run towards the back of the quad. Take a regular voltage tester (the one that looks like an ice pick).

Test the red wire. If you see voltage or light on the tester, the stator is good.

At that time, I will very strongly suspect the main switch is bad. Or the ignition module is dead.

Take the main switch apart. Or follow the the black and black/white wires from the main switch. Bridge these 2 wires. There should be spark if the stator is good and the ignition module is good.

And the bike should run.

Sometimes the on/off switch in the left side of handle bars go bad too, but usually the main switch goes bad.

This same stuff just happened to my buddy this weekend.

Good Luck!!

Make sure you check all the wires, sometimes they can get too close to the hot pipes

dude...same thing last trip for my crew. the stator in my buddy's 97 shee DIED. we swapped all my parts(97 also) to his bike etc. last thing was a stator swap and that was the problem. good luck dude, peace
SHOCKER
Yeha check all the wires, that happened to me on my old bike

My Vote is for the main switich. The contacts wear out. A quick fix is to add solder to the contacts. Good Luck.

the main swith was already bad, it would not turn the bike off, maybe now it wont let it start!!!

I have power to the red. I bridged the black and the black/white. Still no spark to the plug wires. Does this mean the ign module is bad?

According to all the tests Yamaha instructed, it is either the coil or the cdi. Any one happen to have a spare????
Sandpusher
Check to see if there is power going to the coil (orange cable?) I reallu don't remember if it is orange or white or black. Anyhow, test all those.

If there is power, the coil is bad. Time to surf Ebay.com

Or go to the local bike wrecking yards, those things are in abundance.

The coil needs to have between 1.44 ohms thru 1.76 ohms, well mine has .5, everything else had all the ohm numbers within specs. I am going to try the coil first, since it is a small fraction of the cost of the CDI.
Sandpusher
Yep, it all points to the coil.

If you know someone with a Banshee you should borrow the coil just to test if that's the problem.

I've stuff before thinking that would solve the problem and, well, not really.

If you buy the coil new, ask the dealer if you can return it if that's not the problem.
Some dealers are pretty good, but this being an electric part, I am not so sure they will let you bring it back for a refund.

I have 2 87 banshee's and every time that has happendto me its been the cdi box borrow sombody's and try it. icon_biggrin.gif

I checked on ebay today for coils and cdi boxes.
There are at least 10 of each. Some auctions will be done as soon as tomorrow, and there isn't a single bid on them.

Your chances of buying your parts there are pretty good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
