How often should I be inspecting and re- greaseing my cvs?

I do mine every off season unless one of my boots get a hole or tear. Works out good for me.

You may want to pull the boots back every other trip and squirt some more grease in to the CV with a needle. Some of the grease that is used likes to make its way into your boot instead of the CV.

Depends of how hard you drive and car weight IMO. I 'try' to do mine every summer but I usually end up doing them at the dunes once or twice in addition to the summer inspection.

As they said, really depends and car weight, tranny, driving style, etc. IMO it's a whole lot easier an cheaper to service CV's than replace them. I check mine every other trip to add grease. Also consider the grease you're using... if it has a low Drop Point or not. You might also look at the grease deal Mike (Ahipara) has going. He's on the board here.

Like every one said about every year depending on how much you run.
If you’re going to do it yourself I would suggest a rain slicker, its one hell of a mess and grease will get every ware no matter how hard you try not to.

Hey Man, When it comes to CV's I think that you can't check them enough. I inspect mine about every 2 trips, I also check my CV bolts as well, 90 FT.LBS. on 930's. I guess it depends on how well you want to maintain your car.

I think most of us are talking about actual disassembling of the CV's, cleaning and inspecting them. I assume you are talking about pulling the boot back and giving a visual inspection (not much can be seen by doing that unless it is major damage). Are you sure about 90 Ft lbs for 930's?? I safety wire my CV bolts and haven't had any problems.

I must agree with N2Deep you have to get in there, tear them down, clean'm and look for any pits, cracks or excessive worn spots. Regrease and reassemble.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought torque for 930 CV bolts is around 45 to 50 ft lbs. 90 seems high to me? I'll have to go back to outfronts tech page to recheck torque settings

I torque mine to 55 ft lbs and then saftey wire.

Were do you find the needle for your grease gun. I use the bell ray and it comes in a caulking tube so just put it in your caulking gun but the tip is a bit large to get in the cvs. Also it is $40 a tube and I hate spending that much on a stupid tube a grease.

90 lbs is more than a head bolt on a small block chevy. You will break a bolt or strip threads at that torque. I have always done 45 lbs with the thick lock washers and red loctite. Take the corner of a paper towel and it pulls through each hole nicely to remove the grease and then lacquer thinner on paper towel to clean the threads.

I bought a long needle at NAPA and then drilled the end slightly bigger so the thick grease would come out.
Edited to add:
Take a piece of heater hose and two clamps so the needle doesnt pop off.

You can pick up a grease needle at any checker, autozone, napa etc...

A small block chevy rod bolt is similar in size. Head bolts are larger and not even close to 90 lbs. Must be a typo on the gear one web site. I am surprised you have not pulled some threads out.

Here's a pic of the tip of the Napa version. The more needle like versions tend to blow off the base of their connector.
P.S. I have been torquing my 930 bolts in the 70+ range an use red locktite. With me switching to the 'over the CV boots' I will need to buy some special lock washers to space them out. Anyone every seen them? I got a few from EZrider few years back and would like to buy a box. They are lock washers but double the thickness.

My NAPA needle with the end drilled larger and a hose and clamps so it does not come off. Works great.

High Collar lock washers Mine are black and I bought them from Copperstate nut and bolt. They are thicker and smaller diameter
