What's the points gap on an ATC 70? ........ 1985

Do I need a puller to get to them??

Have fun. I just replaced the points on a '83. It now runs after 3 years. It didnt help that I left gas in the carb rolleyes.gif Goodluck, take your time beer.gif and it will be running in no time.

While your in there, it never hurts to adjust the valves, replace the plug and clean the stock fuel filter and place another external filter on the fuel line,(two-reserve also) And very important is the chain tensioner, often WAY over looked on them. Just tighten the snot out of it, they always come loose and need to be adjusted. I think the two biggest problems are points and chain tension! Oh, and nobody ever changes the oil rolleyes.gif I do the oil two or three times a year, cheap, easy, and great insurance on the longevity of a 70. Don't get to caught up on the filter aspect, unless you think the old oil has issues. Its a pain to remove and clean, hence the many oil changes.

I always neglect the air filter cleaning, not sure why, but I'm a slacker on that part.

It was running before, I just wanted to tear it completely down for some serious cleaning and have some fun with it. It's down to the bare frame right now with $300 worth of parts to be replaced sitting next to it. icon_biggrin.gif I figured if I was going that far the points and condenser should be replaced as well

Things to do...........
carb rebuild
beer.gif
check and seal tank
beer.gif
paint

things being replaced........
chain & sprockets
brakes
all cables
ignition switch (on throttle)
grips
tires
points and condenser
and a completely NEW "OEM" air filter assembly (that little guy was a Bengi all by it's self)shock.gif

so far the bearings all look and feel good.

Is there anything I'm overlooking??

Sandho if I remember correctly there is a mark on the fly wheel where the points are suppose to open. Line up the marks and put your VOM on both side of the points. Then turn the adjuster until they break the ohms and they should be set. Turn the flywheel a couple of times to make sure they are close to the mark when they open. If I can find my old Honda books from the 70's I will verify this.

Actually you don't need a puller to adjust the points.
You would of course if your going to replace them.

Article on setting the points

This is on a CT70 but same principle and same point gap... .4mm or .012 in.
