I’m looking to see what the interest would be for my turbo 2332 VW turnkey motor. I am looking to get something like a subie that I can run pump gas in. I looked on the samba and a couple other websites and most normally aspirated 2332 motors are anywhere from 2500 bucks to 4500 bucks.
I don’t know much about it. It’s a single carb, with an adjustable boost setup and a garret turbo, the guy that built it is here in AZ. People call him turbo Mike I guess he only builds VW motors. That’s all I know about him. It runs great, starts easy and is pretty fast.
You guys have any suggestions on what I should try and find out to make this thing more appealing? I have never sold an engine.
Thanks!

Just to give you something to go off of. I sold my 2332 motor for $3600 on The Samba early this year. Had CnC ported heads etc, but was not Turbo. It took me a good few months before a buyer committed. I also know others that had a 2332 that let theres go for $2500 and $3000. All of which were not turbo. I would think you should be able to get atleast $4500. Just depends if you are willing to wait it out for a buyer or if you need a quicker sale. Hope this helps.

Curious question:
Why are you switching to Suby?
Wouldn't the potential buyer of your VW also want to go with SUBI (it is similar price range and HP)?
I know that the turbo VW is slightly lighter than the turbo Subi, but really, why would anyone go VW these days?
Just asking...

I have a buddy that just had a VW motor built because he didn't want to go through all the work to change( Fuel pump, motor mounts, engine cage, radiator, air filter ect) to a water pumper. Aperently VW's arn't cheap to build anymore$$$.

You're right about that. Over in my part of the country, you can plan on spending around 6K for a new 2332 non turbo. I'm sure it can be had cheaper than that, but you have to be careful who you buy from. I was watching a used 2275 turbo and 2332 turbo when I was building my car and prices were averaging $3500 for a used one. I think the 2275 turbo may have sold for 3K, but I'm not sure.

I want to go to a subie for better fuel milage, its a quiter motor, I can run 91 instead of expensive race fuel.
Someone that has a vw bug might want a vw motor to bolt in or someone that doesn't want to deal with a raiator, parts are cheap, its a light motor, tuning a computer, adapter plates things like that. A vw is just allot more simple overall than a subi. That's why I think someone would use a vw motor in a rail.

Thanks for the help guys.
Here is the catch. I can only spend what I get from the sale of my current motor. So I have to get as much as poosible for it and buy for as cheap as I can. But thats the general idea of selling and buying anything I guess.
Do you think its possible?

Same deal here i wanted to do an ecotec but after adding up all cost(me doing the labor too)It was easier to pull my 1914 and make a strong well built 2275 cost me about 900 -1000 buying new h beams, cam, lifters, pistons, crank and i already had the stroker case, ported heads and all the other goodies.

I found a guy on craigslist here that has ready to run turbo 2.5's with an adaperter plate, and computer for 3500 bucks so I figure I need to get 4 grand for my motor so I can still buy a radiator and some other stuff.
Anyone think I can find one cheaper?

This is a list I compiled for another subi conversion thread. I've added some info.
Here's what I have into my 2.5l subaru doing all the work myself including building the computer and wiring harness. Most of the parts came from Outfront, Jeremy has been a big help. I cut down the stock pan myself and cut a new bottom, and turbo drain.
2.0l twin turbo JDM, $850, had rust in the cylinders, the twin turbo has bigger injectors and the same hydraulic lifters as a 2.5. I didn't get this from Outfront. Had I paid a little more and went with Outfront it would have had good plastic and guaranteed to run.
2.5l short block JDM, $300, someone upgraded to an STI block
Stock IHI turbo from a JDM2.0L Subaru, $100, couldn't use the stock twins because of stock exhaust clearance issues
2.0 Inner Timing Covers $60, Every piece of plastic on the motor I got was broke.
2.5 Timing Covers, $90
Timing Cover Rubber, $12
Coils, $40, ebay, two of the stock coil on plug coils were broken. Only two of the set of 4 I bought were good. Ended up with a Dodge Neon coil pack and plug wires. It has more voltage then the stock Subaru coil pack, and defiantly more then the coil on plug coils.
Outerwear, $17
Air Inlet Flange, $35
Air Filter, $45
Shipping, $17
Waste Gate Gasket, $5
Breather Cap, $ 15
Intake Gasket, $5
Water Cross Over o-ring, $2.5
Throttle Body Gasket, $ 1
Exhaust Gasket, $12
Throttle Arm, $ 20
IHI Turbo Flange, $15 made an adapter to t-3 exhaust flange for future upgrades
T3 Flange, $15
Exhaust System, $400
Waste Gate Block Off, $ 8
T3 Gasket, $12
IHI Gasket, $10
Restrictor Plate, $7
Timing Belt, $70
Spark Plug, $12
Shipping, $18
2.5 Head Gasket, $35
Cam Seal, $7
Crank Seal, $7
Shipping, $12
Oil Plug, $2.99
IHI Tail Pipe Flange, $15
Shipping, $12
Water Pump, $54.99, The 2.5 water pump outlet is on the bottom so the inlet can be turned backwards
Water Cross Over o-ring, $25
Water cross over, modified to point backwards, polished, e-bay, $30
Chrome breather covers, $28
Turbo AN oil lines and adapters, ~$100
Turbo AN water Lines, ~$100, went with brass an end and regular rubber hose. much cheaper, but doesn't look that great.
J-tube, $80, stock intercooler was missing some parts that may have worked.
Megasquirt computer, $300, had to modify the crank gear to make the computer work.
Relays, fuse block, wiring, etc, ~$120
Radiator, $439, ebay, aluminum with spal fans and shroud
Adapter $440
Clutch, 4 puck from back yard.
Pressure plate, throw out bearing, $141
Total was about ~$4000. Nothing is chrome or polished yet, except for the water cross over.

It didn't say above, but I shortened my own oil pan. Add about $270 from Outfront.
If that $3,500 engine is truly ready to run then its a good deal. But if its the one I'm thinking of (I looked again this morning and couldn't find it) but it was a JDM engine, adapter and computer. You would still have to get an exhaust ($400) and shorten the pan ($270) at a minimum.

I just sold my 2332 N/A motor for 2800 bucks so I could go subaru. I went with a factory twin turbo 2.0. I just got the subie running and it was about 4 grand total. That was with an EMS stinger ecu and a brand new wiring harness. of course I had to do the work myself and I had to fab up the exhaust. I got everything from metric motors in centerville utah. Give then a call. Awesome to work with. Here is their number: 801-295-6969. Ask for Chris and tell him that Duane sent you.

just like anything else- not all vw engines are built equal. The poor sap who paid for the motor in my rail spent well over 10K. Its probubly worth 6.

Sep 26 2009, 05:48 PM
10k for a vw is stupid. You can buy a Mendi .............AND............ an iron LS v8 or Honda v6 for that price and both motors will out last the frame.

Well, after meeting with steinberg55 (thanks for your time and help Ricky) and reading allot of posts and articles I don’t think I am going to be able to get enough money from selling my current motor to go to the engine that I want/need. I really appreciate all the time you guys put in to help me and answer my questions. I guess I will just have to make do with what I got for the time being.
Anyone ever add EFI to a turbo VW?

My brother has EFI along with a Link system for his vw motor. All I can say is he has major problems keeping his injectors in. If you can find a way to fabricate a bracket to insure that your injectors will not come loose then that might be ok. He hates his though. If you have any questions about that system look him up on here. JMGracing
