I saw this product at the SSSS last September and liked it. I finally decided last week to buy 3 Clickwhips for my trip to Dumont last weekend.

I contacted Clickwhip via email asking where they were located so I could pick them up on my drive out. Don Bauman, the owner responded that he was in Redlands and could meet me at Ontario Mills mall on my way out. The timing wasn't working for us. He went out of his way and found a place he could leave the whips for me. He then changed the place to another so that it was easier for me to get in and out with my RV & trailer. I was really impressed with this type of customer service. icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

We showed up at the pickup location and my whips were there as promise.

I installed one on my bike and one on Bill's (bcubed) bike. Riding at Dumont, the whips performed as advertised and were very nice. On Saturday, Bill, rolled his bike at a slow speed breaking the whip. We went to put it back on and discovered that it broke the fitting as opposed to the whip shaft. Went back to camp, swapped out whips and took digital pictures of the damaged whip.

I sent Don an email on Monday with the pictures. Below are his responses (posted with permission).

Perry,

I have had 6 out of 2500 this year break at the threads. It is no problem I will send you a replacement disconnect. I will need your address and I will send it out no charge.

I do not know why 6 have broken there instead of the shaft breaking 1st as all the others do. The shaft should break first, however I assume that given the right circumstances and the way the bike rolls, (how fast, what angle it hits at, the surface, etc.) the force at the fitting can be more than at the shaft. Everyone that has broke one there has said that it was a slow rollover, (what is slow) so I suggest that from now on when your going to roll the bike do it right and roll over faster.  (just kidding)

From the pictures, it does not look like I put the shaft in as far into the fitting as it will go, so maybe that had something to do with it. Your pictures are the first to show me the shaft position.

Are you able to get the shaft out of the bullet compression fitting?

As soon as I get your address I will send it out to you.

Donald Bauman

I responded to this with my address and informed Don that I knew how to roll correctly, always at a fast speed, hence my cracked ribs..... That it was my buddy who broke the whip.

His next response was

Perry,

I will send you a new bullet just in case you cannot get it off. I will send both out today.

Thank You,

Don

P.S. Normally there is no warranty when it is on a buddies bike as you can never tell what they will do with anything that is not theirs (or so it seems when they are my buddies) Hope you told him that since it was on loan to him that he had to pay for the replacement, you can tell him the new fitting is $26.00 and you expect payment before he can borrow anything else. {:-)

Bill you owe me $26.00 tongue.gif laughing.gif tongue.gif laughing.gif Actually Bill offered to pay to fix it right away. He is a stand up guy.

Man I wish all businesses where like this. I highly recommend doing business with Don. Go here to check out their products: Clickwhips

why pay 26 bucks... i paid ummm NOTHING... and mine is just as good as any... basically chopped the threads off the male coupler welded the compression nut right to the male end... and then bolted the female portion of the couple to my bike... and walla...

I made 2 mounts and 5 flags out of air compressor fittings at Dixieline for less than $15...plus whatever I originally paid for the broken whips that were sitting around my garage. Great idea though, I was going to start making/selling my cheapies myself...glad to hear about someone who stands by their product and provides the customer service you should be able to expect out of any business. icon_smile.gif Wish every business handled their clients this way...

I didn't pay the $26.00 Don is replacing the broken parts. He is standing behind his product.

That is what I am trying to say about the man and his company. Class act.

Dave understands.

Because I don't have the time nor the inclination to make one myself.

It would require me to learn what parts to use, how to put them together, etc. My skills are not in manufacturing.

It was much cheaper for me to pay $45.00 on each whip than to spend the time it would take me to figure out how to build it.

Not all of us have the experience to do these things.

neither do i... just fiddlin with some couplers and realized that hey this one fits here and this one will fit here... HOLY CRAP... i got a click whip and it cost me spare change...

Nick, your coupler, while the same principle, is a different design. You may run into problems with sand packing into yours and gumming up the works and after several months use, it will start to weaken. Don has machined a stronger design for the clickwhip on his CNC machine. I'll show you mine and we can compare next time we see each other.

While it seems Perry broke his in a very rare issue, Don has started making stronger pieces out of I believe carbon steel to address the issue. I will be picking up some for my clickwhips in the future even though I haven't had any problems. Don knew I was an aggressive rider and emailed me about the new pieces and will supply them for free.

I made some out of air fittings and they didn't last very long. My bro has the click whip and they are more sturdy.
