Well took the quads out for thier first real dune experience down in mexico. All in all things went well nothing broke(I think) and both did farely well. Now I have some questions. My wifes quad (the 93) seemed to bog down at WOT the engine would start surging and then loosing power very quickly, only noticed it at WOT and usually hill climbing. Does the bike have a rev limiter or govenor on it or is it a carb problem.
Second My bike a 97 warrior ran very strong without signs of the limiter but I did have problems down shifting while climbing, mainly that my bike would shift to nuetral while trying to shift from 3rd to 2nd. is this a problem thats common if not down shifting with enough force or am I looking at possible gear issues.
Lastly I was fairly pleased with how these bikes performed in the sand but I would be lying if I said I was thrilled I want more power, what mods should I look into?? What gives my the most bang for my buck, changing sprockets, exhausts, jet kits??? Newbie here in need of help

#1. I would definately change the sprocket, I went down a tooth in the front, which is the same as going up about 2.5 in the rear, it gives you more torque, but does take away top end and pretty much makes first gear useless (too low), I went smaller in the front because I can just adjust the chain without adding more links which would need to be done if you went bigger in the rear.
#2. Get a pipe, air filter and jet kit for it, I threw a pipe kit from Alba on mine and it gave it a little more umph, I think total price for the entire kit was right around $425. came complete with everything needed, and was fairly simple to install, I never put a pipe on, or jetted anything before and I figured it out.
My Warrior is an '01 so I dont know about the rev limiter or govenor, mine doesnt seem to have one, is the throttle screw backed out all the way? its the little screw on the thumb control box on the handlebars, when I got mine home after I bought it, took it for a quick spin, and thought this thing sucks, later to find out the screw was half way in, unscrewed it, and that was more like it.
Hope this all helped a bit, by the way I have mine for sale if anyone is interested,

A definite cheap and quick gain would be 12T front sprockets. They are less than $10.00 each and easy to change out. Wont need a new chain unless yours is already stretched so bad you need a new one anyways. You should try it, they only cost $6.95 on the internet, and like $9.95 at the stealer. If you dont like it you can always go back to the 13T and you are only out $10.00 and about an hour of your life.
I have a 2003 so I dont know if it is the same as yours, but as far as the cutting out, the only rev limiter is the parking brake/reverse switches. It is possible to bypass these to see if it is your problem. Possibly you could have a short at high vibrations that engages the limiter.
It may also be your carb, your airbox/filter, fouled plugs, or some other electrical problem and possibly even a stator.

Addressing the down shifting from 3rd to 2nd and finding nuetral. This is common on many bikes. Instead of trying to press harder, push longer. Keep pressure on the shifter for a longer amount of time, letting the gears mesh properly.
Power: Warriors are not known for their high performance, They are reliable and a proven design that works well for what it is. If you are already needing more power, it is the best time to decide whether you want to put alot of money into both bikes (Pipes, filters, jetting, gearing) or upgrade to a bike that has the power you need. I think the warrior is a great bike for many things. It does lack power for dunes though. It might be better to cut your losses on the bikes now instead of waiting till you spend $800 - $1,000 on mods and then deciding they still don't have the power you want. You might not want to hear it but that's the long and short of it.

I didnt want to say it, because I know the price you paid for both bikes, and I would not have past it up, but warriors although good bikes, cannot compete with the honda 400 or the suzuki 400, but for 2 of those bikes you are looking at $11,000 for both new, wish I had more help for ya, but the only thing that matters is that you are having fun, who cares how fast stuff is, my bike is not the fastest, and I have a killer time on it.

I really appreciate the help, I know that this bike will be a limited time bike maybe a year or two. the only hills I really struggled with were really steep and chewed to hell. I was also running skat trak V paddles, my wifes bike has the skat trak haulers and they seemed to lock up better(I think I will be changing to better paddles later). I have seen a lot of talk about changing the front sprocket and I think I will be giving that a try. I loved the bike for its low end torque and face it this is the first bike I have been on in 8 years(last was a honda 200 ATC so I am loving it. I do have CC envy though when I see a new Yami 450 fly by me going up the Machoro(Golfo's equivilant to Comp hill) I think I can sell this bike for 3 grand give or take alittle and now I only need to come up with another 2 and I have a killer bike. But I need to get a lot better at wrenching on this bike(I am still afraid to take off the carbs from the bikes) and alittle more comfortable with these power bands then I will consider a true dune bike. As for trail riding this bike was great and on flat ground I could dust my cousins 1650CC(I think) VW powered rail.
Another note: This site is terrific I love the information and everyone is really forgiving when it comes to dumbshit questions( I know I will have a lot of them) I truly appreciate all the help

The rev limiter kicks in when you are over revving, do the warriors have reverse? if it does have a reverse if you iht the throttle in reverse you will hear the rev limiter kick in, it kind of sounds like its sputters, i wouod definently get the alba kit, and that sprocket sounds like its pretty good, do you like to hit top speed on your warrior?

Something to check out.
Make sure all your electrical connections are clean and tight, especially on the reverse selector. If those get dirty, you will have a sputtering problem. Happens with the 300EX also. Seen a lot of Warriors have this problem and it clears right up and costs nothing to repair.

I will be sure to check those connections ASAP, thanks for the suggestion.
Dont worry about hijacking the post, My wifes grandfather has a beach house in Golfo de Santa Clara. About an hour south of San Luis. Most of the riding is on the beach with a couple of killer hills right there. This was the first trip we actually explored into the back country alittle and there were some killer looking dunes but not being familiar with them we only ventured a bit before deciding to head back. For the hard core rider this would probably not be that much fun but for the weekend warrior nothings better that drag racing up the hill for a while, while the wife and kids played in the ocean. Finishing up and going two minutes to the local bar El Capitan which sits right on the beach and enjoying some nice refreshing drinks.

Rocky Point has great dunes. They are about 10 miles out of town, back towards the border. You can see them in the distance on the west side of the road. then take the dirt road about 5 miles in. Not one person there and all the duning you can take! Been out there 4 times. It makes a good daytrip then back to the beach at night.
