My son is 5 and rides a LT50. He is not old enough to take this course correct? That being the case do I take the "observer" course and then I am covered?

I'm also confused because we are getting two different rulings:

QUOTE
When operating an ATV on public land, California state law currently requires that all ATV riders under 18 years of age must possess an ATV Safety Certificate or be supervised by an adult possessing the Certificate. All ATV riders under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult.

QUOTE
PARENTAL SUPERVISION. No person under the age of 14 shall operate an all-terrain vehicle unless that person satisfies the requirements of 38503 C.V.C. (safety certification) and in addition, is accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. (38504 C.V.C.). Neither a parent or guardian of a child who is under 14 years of age, nor an adult who is authorized by the parent or guardian to supervise that child shall grant permission to, or knowingly allow, that child to operate an ATV in a manner that violates Section 38504. (C.V.C. 38504.1)

REQUIRED RIDER SAFETY TRAINING. No person under the age of 18 shall operate an all-terrain vehicle(ATV) unless he/she has received the safety course in this state or another state or is under the direct supervision of an adult who has the appropriate safety certification in his/her possession (38503 C.V.C.) For ATV certification information, please contact the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) at 949-727-3727.

Just got off the phone!

6 yrs old or older can take this training class.

Some questions answered.....

Age: 6 year old to 17 year old riders are Required to have Certification or be under direct supervision of an Adult with Certification.

Loaner ATVs: Some locations do have loaner ATVs for use of children - FREE.

Locations: There are MANY locations across many states, use the below link to find the one nearest you. Click on your State, Enter your Zip and follow the instructions. It will give you allot of info including how many spots are still open in each class.

http://www.atvsafety.org/onlineEnroll.cfm

Under 6 Riders: By Mfg. Age requirements, they are not supposed to be riding. I agree this is BS, but its the current law. My little ones under the age of 6 will simply ride ATC70's that do not have an Mfg Age Requirement. They will be under my direct supervision and I plan to get Certified myself this year. It's the only loop I see for this scenario.

Special GD.com Training: YES! This is still in the works and will happen, details to follow. If you're worried and have trips planned REAL soon...just get it done. Your kids will still be invited and recognized at the event.

That seems like a lot of $$$, but the way I look at it, get your kids certified for free, then they are legal, you only need to be certified to supervise them if they are not certified, right? No need for the adults to get certified if the kids have the cert.

Am I correct?

Yes, that is correct.

A couple of questions.............

If the quad isn't green stickered, can you take the class?

You have to be 6yr old to take the class?

I believe......An adult needs to watching any child under 14 yrs old riding at any time.........so if the kids take this class, is this still true?

Why isn't this class also open to SxS, and motorcycles? Just wondering.............

The funding for this comes from grants from our Green Sticker fees, right?

I am happy for this program, a bunch of us were trying to get this done 5 years ago

A couple of questions.............

If the quad isn't green stickered, can you take the class? Per ASI it must have a Registered VIN#, it does not specify Green or Red.

You have to be 6yr old to take the class? Yes.

Why isn't this class also open to SxS, and motorcycles? Just wondering.....Motorcycle are not as regulated as ATV's. What is the Mfg. Age recomendation for a SxS? dunno.gif

I just called and got signed up. Classes for 6-11 year olds are limited, as they have a different cirriculum for them. The guy suggested that I just take the class and my son just "observe". This makes it easier to get into a class and give him all the same priveleges as if he actually participated in the class. I'm doing the October 18th one in Colton, so he will be all legal before the first family trip.

Just wondering why the ATV Safety Institute has the online course as an option? Is there anything that says this is not appropriate training? I took the test, got the cert and will use it until I can get my kid certified. I don't mind having her take the physical course to get the cert, but why offer the e-course and cert if it's not appropriate training? I figure I can at least buy some time this way until I can get my kid certified for real...
Bustin-bs
Halloween weekend the "Dune Tour" they offer safety training by atv safety, classes are legnthy roughly 3 to 4 hours long. best part of this weekend is you leave the kids with the instructor and walk the "Dune Tour" area...

As for my kids both of them are certified, and it does eas the mind...

The on-line "E-Course" is for a refresher or introductory on some of the items covered in the Rider Course.

Only Participants or Observers who pass the Rider Course will receive the Certification that meets the Law.

I have already signed my daughter up for the class on the 22nd. I called to verify that they would have a loaner quad for her and they could not verify that one would be available. Any way to verify that one will be available?

Also, I asked about signing myself up as an "observer" to avoid having to pay the $150 and still get certified. They said that only "observers" under the age of 15 will get a certificate for observing. I'm going to try and get in at no charge since I purchased a new quad a few years ago, they don't have it in their system, but they said to call back with the vin and purchase info and they could probably get me in the class at no charge, so we'll see.

Anymore info on the GD.com classes?
