I just got back today from buying a quad, I am the proud new owner of a 1986 Trx250r. This bike is immaculate!! I knew who owned it and how it's been ridden (he hasn't rode it at ALL this season, and only once last season.)

Here's whats been done/on it.

- Fully drag ported motor (stock cylinder bored .080 over)
- cool head with custom dome
- Fmf gold series fatty pipe/ silencer
- Fmf gold series pipe (signature series??)
- paul turner adjustable pipe
- stock pipe w/ gaurd
- +6 durablue axle
- chromed stock swingarm
- chromed stock front arms
- aftermarket polished radiator shrouds
- race cut stock plastics
- polished jug and side cases
- 39mm keinen carburator
- after market handlebars (look like pro tapers)
- teather kill switch
- Nerf bars
- BRAND new 22x11x10 paddle Skat-trak extremes (never touched sand yet)
- new douglas blue label rims for above tires
- razor front tires
- new douglas blue label rims for above tires
- stock tires front/rear with stock rims front/rear in almost new shape
- new hole shot rear tires
- new douglas rims for above tires
- front dirt tires (fast trekker?)
- dico rims for above tires
- aftermarket front bumper
- extra stock parts for bike (brake light, dust covers, etc etc)
- braided coolant lines

I know who owned this bike and he kept it in VERY good condition, the new topend w/ portjob only has 5-6 rides on it. He has replaced EVERY bearing in the bike when he tore it apart. He also told me how to maintain it and keep it clean, he gave me polish to keep it looking nice. I received a bag of jets and pipe springs, a extra sprocket, and a box of stuff.. This bike is truly very nice. It's more than I expected and wow.. it's the best thing icon_biggrin.gif He ran 50/50 92 octane with race gas.. but I am going to put a stock head gasket back on and run 92 octane with octane booster like my neighbor does. The plastics have no cracks in them and the seat is the original with no tears or cracks in it. The stickers are a little torn but its ok. Light works perfect, not sure about brake light. He even threw in some brackets for flat track racing to lower the bike. I'm so excited, I bought it for 5k cash. I'm only 15 and this is my first quad. I've ridden 3-wheelers/dirtbikes/sandrails all my life though.. Did I get a good deal?? Even if people don't think so I know I did.. I will get pictures up soon!
RRon3
Sounds pretty sweet, the best quad ever made icon_biggrin.gif

I would stay away from the octane boosters though, they don't really do much for a 2 stroke. I would stick with the 50/50 mix.

It sounds like a nice bike with lots of work done to it. It will do you good to learn young that as long as you feel you got a good value for your money, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.....enjoy, I hope this brings you many happy hours of riding fun..icon_smile.gif
Sm0k3d
Well you see, I don't have the money for the race gas (very expensive right now!!) my neighbor runs 92 on octane booster and his bike runs faster than the one I bought (same motor) The extra weight is the big difference.. Well I have pictures.. Here ya go!! this were tooken tonight when I went to buy it. icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

Last of all, The guy used to own another 250r before this that was completly stock that he raced.. He was very good (has these small trophies and then 3 larger ones, 2 first, 1 second.)

Sm0k3d
big trohpies.

Sweet bike, looks like mine did before I went crazy with it.

Don't run octane boost in it, that stuff doesn't do anything. Like RRon 3 said run 50/50 and you will get better performance out of it. Don't say you can afford the race gas you bought a bike that needs it so do the right thing and you won't be sorry.

I have had my 86 250R sense 87 and have never had any problems with it because I take care of it. You have a bike that will last another 20 years as long as you treat it right.

Clean it and detail it after every ride, doing this will help you spot any problem that may start to show also you will notice any nuts or bolts that are starting to come loose.

You didn't just buy yourself a bike you bought a very clean classic and like any classic car you see they take a lot of TLC.

Congrate on the new quad and hope to see you in the dunes.... icon_wink.gif

Now I’ll get off my soapbox....

Smok3d, First of all, nice bike. Second, I see that your from Vancouver. This is the same Shane0 from over on deepsand(the one from Oregon). You might wanna check out this site http://www.sandlakeduners.com It has alot of peeps from your same area and alot of cool local info. In fact, there is a couple from Orting that ride Honda's exclusively. Good luck with your new quad and enjoy!

Nice 250R!

I wouldn't worry about how much you spent... like stated above... if you got the money and it made you happy... then it's a good deal. It sounds like there's a good amount of money in it and he gave you some extra stuff... plus it looks like it was well taken care of. 86 TRX's in good condition are going to be about that much... I just hope my 88 is still waiting for me to pick it up at the end of the season... icon_biggrin.gif ... for about the same price.

Don't worry if you negative feedback from people... I paid $2300 for my '85 250R- I knew the owner ( a Chevrolet Master mechanic) since I was 11, he had it since then and took real good care of it. As time went by, I watched him do everything to it (everything I wanted in a 250R) and went on a couple of Glamis trips with it (it was my friends dad's bike, we both had '84 200x's). Then one day he had an accident where he fell down his driveway, hit his head and was never the same. So, for TWO YEARS I begeed, pleaded, kissed ass, whatever it took to get that bike. I knew what it was worth, so I offered him 2 g's for it, "NOPE" was the answer. Another few months later, threw the number of $2300 at him and he agreed! A month later I took delivery of this baby...

Also, like these guys said, don't use octane booster... try to get race gas in there. Before I forget, why are you planning on changing the head gasket? Unless the head is milled a lot, you could get away with using a CR gasket to raise the compression a bit... make sure you find out about the head though.

Good luck!

Thats a sweet trike TC.. Still have it?
Sm0k3d
Right now it has a cr250 head gasket (they split apart and this is only the metal shim part..) The bike has a 15:1 compression ratio, starts first kick EVERY time. We just hooked up the kill switches that he had disconnected (from racing) and also checked the anti-freeze and every thing, I'm going to put on my flag and I also put stock honda gromets for the seat (he only had some tape for some stupid reason) I Suppose I can get away with having my parents buy me fuel for that much, who knows.. Maybe some av gas will do it good. The crunch on the head is also lowered, trust me this is one of the fastest 250r's out there (on stock jug and 4-wheeler).
Bansh88
Sounds like a sweet deal to me. What's up with the +6 axle and stock A-arms though?? Doesn't it look a bit off with the wide rear end?
PimpShackDave
Clean bike. icon_biggrin.gif Yours too, TC. icon_biggrin.gif Like everyone else says, stick with the race gas, the octane boosters just aren't the same. And I think a classic like that, in that condition, is well worth 5 grand...

sm0k3d, you DO need a haircut. Looks like you have a serious case of helmet hair. You're not from the 909 are you? icon_wink.gif
SHOCKER
sweet, hope you like it alot

My piped '88 250R ran perfect on 92 pump gas + Trick additive (and it was fast).
Sm0k3d
Ya I talked to my neighbor about the gas, he said octane booster doesn't increase performance for the bike, it just raises the octane for the compression. So the bike doesn't ping and pre-detenation happens. Also the owner said when he ran 92 with octane booster the bike ran a little better cause it was cleaning out better and ran a little hotter than the race gas does. Tommorrow I am hooking up the stock kill switch (tether was hooked up today), and Also I am cutting the end of the nerf bars a little and putting stainless steel caps on the ends so the paddles will miss them when they expand. I am going to either sandlake or Florence for spring break (probably both) On April 5-10th so ya.. Hope Some people can come down! My neighbor is looking for some banshee's ass to kick laughing.gif

Yours too, TC.

Thanks guys... icon_biggrin.gif not trying to hijack this kids thread but...

Still have the bike but, I plan on buying a TRX250R or a new TRX450R at the end of the season to keep the knee safe for awhile. I'll still ride the 85, just not as much.
Sm0k3d
Ahh your not highjacking my thread! Good to hear you still have the bike, I have to admit.. atc's are fun, i've ridden them all my life and thats all, I'm just ready for a little more stable bike with more power and better suspension so I went with this.

But, other than that.. does any one know what gearing i Should be running?? Currently i have a 14t front sprocket and im unsure about the rear, Its dark so ill check tommorrow.. and I will be running 22x11.00-10 paddle skat-trak extremes. My neighbor said I should atleast drop it to 12 on the front and leave the rear alone. btw also the motor is a .080 fully drag ported (by craig michaels; any one heard of him??) with the crunch lowered and a cool head that has a custom shaped dome running 15:1 compression. Looks like all I have to do is find 1 nut for a motor mount, re-hook one of the kill switches up (before april) and cut the nerf's a little bit for the paddles.. hrm.. then I have to go back to the guy's house and he is giving me two tool boxes more of parts for the bike and some other parts for it (he said he will keep looking for the next few weeks for extra stuff that he finds in his garage/trailer.) So tommorrow I will go pick that up, and a new flag for it. Might as well pick up the head gasket I need, and i have to register the bike in my name rollsmile.gif

Congrats - sweet looking ride.

Can't wait for spring break!! April 3-11 icon_biggrin.gif We are going to Sand lake to kick some banshee arse!!
Sm0k3d
Right now the shocks are very plush and feels nice, I haven't rode it hard yet, only in my nieghbors field and i couldn't pass 2nd gear, couldn't get any grip. This bike is FAST!! Any one heard of Craig Michaels??

But other than that, I have no more money for shocks and stuff.. How much are they?? maybe for christmas I can try to save up and have my parents buy me some shocks and I'll sell my 80 and buy some extended a-arms.
Jumpnbean
NICE BIKE .
86
When you get ready to do your shocks and a-arms go to the Cannon-dale web sites and buy yourself some used arms off of a Moto or Blaze with the 19 inch Ohlines. These A=arms will go right on your quad and you will love them, also this way you get a great deal. You might also want to look for a Scotts steering stabilizer their too. Good luck and nice quad....86
