Full Version: Family Camping At Gw

My family has been going to glamis for years and had not ventured any farther South then Patton Valley until last year when my wife, friends and I camped at GW. We felt it was much more family oriented compared to where we normally camp, except for the camp ground racers (which was probably my fault, as it was late when we got in the first time, and we set up camp too close to the first dunes). Problem being that it seemed that everyone heading out on rides that weekend felt they needed to be in 5th gear pinned, 20' from our camp.

We will be headed out there again for Thanksgiving this year and I will be the first of our group to arrive so my question is, where should I camp to get away from "traffic"? I know I probably should have spent some more time cruising to check out camp spots when I was there last, but the dunes were too good that trip. I have been familiarizing myself with the "baseball diamond" google map that I found on here last week. I don't remember who labled it all out, but its really cool.

Thanks in advance.

Along the canal on the west side would be the first pick...

There really isn't any place in GW that doesn't have camp racers...

I tend to camp around 2 miles north of the ranger station and its nice, though you have a whole lot of people buzzing your camp unless you sit closer to the canal.

This is why I asked, because I would have natually gone the other way towards 3rd base and that kiddie track.

Don't get me wrong, we normally camp off Gecko so we are used to noise. But where we were at GW people were so close it seemed the whole weekend that my 6 month old son didn't get much sleep.

I'm again, going off of memory, but where is the Ranger station at GW?

I went to GW last year for the first time ever (been camping in glamis since 92'). I was appauled at how many cops were there. Our group alone got harassed 5 different times (all for BS stuff) in one weekend. I will personally never go back there

That's where he's talking about, the canal on the west side IS the 3rd base line. You definately won't get as much traffic along that canal but beware of the soft spots.

Just curious. If you had such a horrible experience and you'll never go back why do you read the "Gordons" forum? Don't get me wrong, I hate when the fuzz is is everywhere too.

If they were racing that close to camp you need to let someone know.
I only see the occasional racer through there, usually someone that just got there and wants to stretch their toys legs really quick.
We have found it pretty peaceful all the way in the back around shortstop, second base.
If you want alot of peace and quiet, go down to the next exit and camp at Ogilby, we may be going back there just to get away from the Rangers.

The Ranger station is at the very front, right where you come in over the bridge.

I usually camp way north about halfway to 5 mile drop, if you use the baseball diamond analogy I would be past the warning track way out in left field. There is very little dust but you have people hauling (_|_) through the camp areas on their way to Patton Valley.

SANDFANATIC
Look at the area as a baseball field. The bathrooms are home plate and the canals are the foul ball lines.....

Your best bet to avoid all this is to get out to Left field. Get passed that kiddy track and all. That canal is the quitest and the further north you get the less traffic you'll get.

The first base line is where the vendors are and there will be a butt load of traffic on that side.

As for camp racers.....Sorry....GW seems to be filled with people who don't know how to dune and need to show off thier riding ability in the camp area. Don't get me wrong...I love GW and camped there for 33 years but, that's my honest observation. I seem to see way more of it there than I do anywhere else.

Thank you all for the responses, can't wait to get back out there and just ride.

Dune safe!

Along the canal on the west side is where I've had the worst times camping at GW....it was only twice.
First time was some yehooo in a Hummer that thought the enbankment for the canal was his personal playground.
Second time was a bunch of kids in long travel ford rangers that would rip up and down the canal road.
Yea no thanks. I'll take a nice spot out in left/center field.

Home Team's Bull pen. go past 5 mile drop to the next drop head west towards the berm. Quiet as a church on Monday Morning.

This area that you speek of, can MOHO's make it or is it too soft ?

We did spend a week last easter, along 3rd base line almost home, it was great, but at the same time it was pretty much empty, until the thursday before easter sunday, then we felt like sardines......
