Full Version: To Buy Race Fuel Or Not?

I have a 2004 Predator that was absolutely stock and I was feeling really dork*y as I had no idea what kind of power a hopped up 2-stroke quad can have.

Took it out for real for the first time to Glamis over PD weekend. Got SMOKED by my die-hard highly modified Banshee riding cousins! I also ran out of premium fuel for it and began to run regular. It knocked the sh!t out of the motor. Hope I didn't mess it up too bad.

With a resolve to be able to keep up with these kick starting maniacs I have begun the process of modifying my ride. Obviously I started with a new exhaust system; an E Series White Brothers. I replaced the old air filter in the box with a K&N in the stock box. A twist throttle as I am a life long Harley rider and have a weak thumb. Stupid thumb throttles.....

I am getting it jetted for the pipe this week and am contemplating an airbox mod by cutting a hole in the back side with a dust pre-filter before getting it jetted.

Has anyone out there done this airbox mod? Was there a noticable difference? I have been told by the shop that the Predator breathes well without another hole in the airbox but it has a pretty big lung and I figure the more air the better. Any comments?

Now, down to my original question: I have been told that It would serve me well to mix 50/50 racing fuel with premium. Is this worth it? Will I notice a difference compared to just premium? Is it okay to run this fuel with my quad/setup?

Is there anything else I can to SMOKE these noisy bumblebee sounding 2 stroking cousins of mine that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg?

Any advice would be appreciated EXCEPT from those of you who swarm around hives like my cousins. Their advice is to buy a Banshee F**k that!

Im not running an airbox and have a clamp on k&n directly onto my Edelbrock carb on my Pred and it runs great. The airbox mods do help a bit. Taking the little snorkel off the front of the airbox will help out as well.

lots of good info on predator owners site. seems that getting as much air as possible is one of the biggest thiunbgs you can do. the exhaust seems to flow extremely well, you only need a slip on. nothing has been made yet to out pewrform the stock head pipe. i usually run straight race fuel n my predator, but have run super unleaded a couple times and it detonated a little, so im sticking with straight race fuel. you will not beat a highly modified banshee with this bike. a banshee with pipes and k&n's yes you can with min or no mods to your bike.

I don't see that you have done anything to require the use of racing fuel. A pipe and air filter with a little jetting isn't a sufficient enough of a engine mod to justify 4.50 a gal for race gas. I would just run premium gas in it.

If you want to race the big boys then buy a big boy toy...

actually i asked this questions over the pers. weekend and i did try a 50/50 race fuel to premium. i have a banshee with stock motor w/ pipes, air filter, and boost bottle. (just a few little mods) and i honestly did NOT see a big diffrence in my performance of my bike. the only thing that seemes better is it ran cleaner than normal. not as much smoke when i first started in the morning to clear the carbs out.

it wont win you races but if you want to try it once then do it. but its not gonna be a "holly crap its a beast now" type of feeling. but if you have bigger motor mods (which it doesn sound like you do) dont worry about it.

tell your cousin youll race him long distance. let him run out of gas first then you can beat him. icon_biggrin.gif

Cant do that Dune. The air is sucked in from the top of the airbox lid. YOu could however probably get away with cutting the BOTTOM of the airbox. Just screw cutting holes into and take off the snorkel in FRONT of the airbox next to the big tube that goes to the carb. If you do plan on cutting a hole in the airbox go buy some UNI airbox vents and put them in place. That should do it.

You don't need to run race gas or a blend of race/pump gas unless you start raising the compression. The higher the octane the slower the fuel burns. If you're running higher than necessary octane you'll actually give up power instead of gain it. Now, if you want to get serious about trying to beat your cousin's Banshee then you should consider raising the compression. Then you will need to run higher octane fuel. Good luck! beer.gif

Your going to have to do some serious work to the bike to beat even lightly modded banshee's. That's the trade off between two and four stroke engines. Pipes, air filter set-ups, and other bolt ons will help you but high compression, lumpy cams, and big valves are where the real power is. There is power to be had but as with anything you modify, reliability will be compromised. Maybe not alot but depending on what you do and who does the engine work, you could end up with a time bomb for an engine. Race gas will have to be used at three times what pump gas goes for and top ends will be more frequent.

If it was me, I would definitely keep it as close to stock as possible. My banshee is stock except for the pipes and jets and it has ran for 7 years.

My suggestion, if you are running hard and hear pinging, time to try a 50/50 mix. I run it in my Yam 450s when I know I will be running them hard or racing up a hill. I don't think it adds anything to the hp, or if it does I don't notice it, but it does stop the pinging, and perhaps will run a little cooler.

It won't help trying to beat a piped and properly jetted 350 two stroke twin up a hill. Before you race your friend, disconnect one of his plug wires, then quickly challenge him to a run up the hill.... icon_biggrin.gif

What if I just cut a hole in the bottom of the air box? Will I have to re-jet and would I have to put in a prefilter?

I think I'll try the pull-1-spark-plug idea. Bet I could beat him then......

Fu**in' Banshees anyways......

I would probably put a prefilter on there for sure. i dont think its a great idea to have a big hole on the bottom without anything to stop s*** from gettin it there

if you ride in anyhting other than sand, i wouldnt open the airbox up top much unless you put some type of prefilter on it, either outwares, or somthing. those 1 in diam filtered air box vents would work well.
