X2. I sure hope we get this figured out before xmas/NY's. It's a long drive to find out there is no place to park.

I've never seen a problem with people crossing the road, at glamis, gordons, or ocotillo wells. If you drive down the road or next to the road I've seen it. They even started letting people cross the overpass (over 8) to get from buttercup to gordons and back. This was a few year ago, I'm not sure now.

we camped on the other side of the tracks and across the street from the store. We saw the police siting there at that tracks but as long as you " cross" the road and dont drive down it there where no problems. Saw two people get tickets but they were both driving down the hwy...

Looks like they are targeting people crossing the tracks to get to Boardmanville.

It is not illegal to cross the road at a 90 degree angle. It is only a violation if you drive along side it, like on the shoulder. If you drove on the road/shoulder and then crossed the track, that would be illegal. Pretty shady ticket if you ask me, but it is their choice.

You have to drive down the road 2-300 feet to cross the tracks. A 90 degree angle cross isnt going to do you any good going to the dunes from Jackass flats.

This situation is not good. I can see " jumping the tracks" , as a means to avoid a ticket, as an alternative that is gonna result in something very bad.

Besides buggy - cant you just get off, push it across the tracks, and then get back on?

We crossed right in front of them on Halloween weekend without incident, but I was a bit nervous about it.

This situation was a LONG time coming and due to the work of a small number of very dedicated individuals, most notably Herman Schneider for whom the bridge over the all american canal was named. The planning and attempts to get all required approvals go back to before 2000. It also did not come without a cost. In exchange for getting the bridge over the AAC and getting the I-8 bridge declared dual use (making it legal for OHV's to use) the BLM agreed to close camping west of the canal at Gordon's well and put stricter limits on use in that area as well.
This is a long term project and most of the agreements and compromises for it were made long before there were any dune centric user organizations out there to represent duners. Herman Schneider was a BLM employee who saw the need for a safe way to cross between Gordon's and Buttercup and took up the fight himself on behalf of duners.

yes there have been tickets for crossing the road and track, our group has had 2 of them since new years, and the fine is based upon your previous driving record.
