Hey all,
Just a heads up. I got pulled over in Coachella on Tuesday 11-23-09. All CHP wanted was to measure OAL. They thought I was too long. I know there are a lot of folks out there that are over length. Just a heads up to all those who travel that way. They are looking and measuring. Fortunately, as I expected I was measured at 62' (3' short of the legal limit) and was not issued a citation. Happy Wheeling!!!

What were you driving? Did they check weight or license?

2008 Allergro FRED 35QBA pulling a 22'(27' OAL) enclosed trailer.
Did not check weight (would have passed also, I think)
Checked my License, Registration and Insurance. I have a class "A" so that was not even an issue with me.
Just said it looked too long

Is there any legal way to go over 65 ft. I have read stuff here before but after reading the charts in the DMV link below I don't understand how to solve the problem. Maybe somebody knows how to interpret this chart.

the answer is no, a big rig can go to 70 foot IF he is pulling doubles and they are 28 foot trailers or a 53 foot trailer and thats on federal hwy. only. hwy 111 and 86 are Cali. roads still 65 foot
Sanddoc
Glad you passed. Where abouts were you when pull over? On the 10 or 86?

I was on 86s just out of South of I-10 a couple of miles.

It was around 1pm.

I was headed to Ocotillo. Had a great trip Turkey on Thanksgiving and then kids got sick with the Flu. 1 from each of the families with us, so we headed home early.

I have a really good friend who has a 75' Racecar Hauler and rolls the scales without issue. There are exemptions for Interstate travel for motorsports. They are Commercial Vehicles on Federal Highways. As stated earlier 86s and 86 are Cali roads. How else would all of those NASCAR and NHRA guys get around they are all 75'.

I can say that the statment was clearly made by CHP when I was pulled over that "The Legal Limit is 65' I just need to measure"

A chp passed me, and pulled over my neighbor and measured a couple of years ago. I'm 68.5, and his rig was only 63. His stripes made his look longer.

It is a raw deal to limit people to 65 feet! In AZ I believe it is 75 feet, so if someone has a rig that lives in AZ, goes to Glamis once or twice a year, how is he supposed to shrink his rig 10 feet? rainbow.gif

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it is 65' here in AZ. Nevada is 75' That is IF I'm remembering well...

On Edit, this was taken off the AZ Legislature webpage.

4. If the length of a semitrailer is more than fifty-three feet, the overall length of a truck tractor-semitrailer combination shall not exceed sixty-five feet on all highways, except for the national intercity truck route network designated by the United States secretary of transportation as required by the surface transportation assistance act of 1982 or on a system of highways that is designated by a local authority.

My bad!

Here is a great link! http://www.towingworld.com/articles/TowingLaws.htm

So let me re-phrase, if I was was visiting from ID to Glamis, and I was legal @ 75 feet for ID, and come down to commie-fornia, how is it fair that I get a ticket? Just tossing out my .02. icon_biggrin.gif
