Camped on the canal at Glamis this weekend... found a cool pet.
I spotted him crawling across the sand near my trailer, so I nudged him into a bucket for the weekend. I wanted to hold onto him so everyone in camp could appreciate him. At the end of the weekend, I let him go close to where I found him.
We dropped a stinkbug in the bucket so he could have a nice little Thanksgiving feast... Sure enough it was eaten by morning.
He had a body of about 3 inches long, and was easily the size of the palm of my hand.

My mom used to tell me stories about when she was a kid they would go out and try and catch these things and they would spring up/jump at them...
I don't try and pick them up.

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

I haven't seen a tarantula in G before. Cool find! They are very docile if you are slow and steady around them and can be picked up carefully. If they wave their forelegs in the air, they feel threatened and you should back away. They can bite.

I saw one over Vets weekend. And we used to see them all the time on the other side of the canal.

Saw several crossing San Felipe Wash in Ocotillo Wells earlier this season (October or so). Had a bunch of kids following me, so we made a quick u-turn and held a field class for them - talk about EXCITED! Played crossing guard for the little critters (the spiders) until they got to the other side of the wash and didn't get squashed by a passing truck/buggy/quad/bike. Definitely cool.

Im not big fan of spiders, but i can respect them. Im very glad i didnt see any critters when I camped in a tent at Glamis a few years ago. I would have never been able to sleep!
