So I have a 1985 CR500 that im getting ready for the dunes... pulled the right side cover and its so corroded I cant get a new water pump seal in it. The previous owner epoxied up the whole dang thing and now its junked...

Soooooo........ Im wondering if anybody on here might have one laying around that they would be willing to sell?

Im trying to get out to the dunes with it Wednesday so I can pay whatever and pick up or pay for shipping.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!! (FYI - I already checked the ussual places Ebay/Craigs List/CR500Riders and so on.)

you can try bannedcr500riders.com but the cure for that is to put the newer outer case on. Its not magnesium.. plus you get the bigger clutch housing.

The corrosion in the water pump area was very common on that vintage Honda. If you did happen to find a used one, I would bet that it has suffered some corrosion. Maybe not as bad as what you have, but i would make sure that a seal will fit before you fork over any cash. I'd spring for a new one and save myself some grief.

Thanks for all the replies.... Been out of town since Wednesday. Ya Im thinking I may just have buck up and buy a new side cover. The only problem I have is nobody can tell me if a newer year will work and Honda only goes back to 1990 for parts?!

Sooooooo....... Does anybody know if the newer years will fit?

And ya... I think this thing is gonna prolly kick my azz. I cant wait to try it out though! BooYah!!!!!! 500 Power BayBay!!!

EDIT - Been on CR500Riders.com but will try the other one tonight. - Thanks!!!

yeah far as i know those things are pretty much the same almost all the way through

I had an 85 and it had the same problem. This was back before the internet and of course ebay and CL so finding used parts was difficult as you had to do it the old fashioned way. Salvage yards knew what those parts were worth and weren't ashamed of saying so. The cure as noted is to put a newer cover on and I believe it was 89 when they went away from mag, so look for an 89 and up cover. If you do find an 85 cover there is a fix for it. What I did with mine was grind all the corrosion out, then filled it with epoxy, ground it back out, and then drilled a new hole at the lowest point. In this I installed a zinc annode. What happens then is the annode takes all the corrosion and saves your case because it is the weaker metal. You will have to replace it about once a year, but after I did that, I never had another issue with the water pump.

If you decide to part with that bike, let me know, i wouldn't mind having another 85 again. that bike was wicked. My 84 has much the same manners and I love it for it's simplicity, but there is something to be said for water cooling. Anyway, hope the above helps.

Cool, let me know if you decide you want to get rid of it later on. I may be interested in having an 85 again and selling my 84. Been toying with the idea of an AF 500 too.

Go for it on the AF 500. I have had 2 of them and some of the most fun riding I have ever had.
