I have a 2 piece air filter. Night before the last glamis trip i ran out of oil. Only had enough for the inner filter. But i got to thinking how much sand sticks to the outer filter instead of just bouncing off. Instead of scoring more oil from a vendor in G i just ran the outer filter dry. Went on a few good rides, im usually in the very back so im not always in fresh clean air. The air filter looks super clean, hope the inner filter is handling the small dust particles.

Just brainstorming...there is less air restriction so the bike might run a little leaner. I up the main jet for G anyway. Do you guys think this is a bad idea? Was about to clean my filter and get new oil but im thinking of running it like this another trip.

The pic shows how clean the filter still is. Its usually caked with sand after a glamis trip.

Uhh.. Errm.. Never tried this.. I have however experienced the catastrophic failure that occurs if you don’t run Oil and a Grease seal.

Is this a joke??
Legit Duner
Get an outerwares prefilter..

haha Krusty whats up is it a bad idea? Was thinking an outerwears would be cool too. Just sew in a nylon cord or use a big asparagus rubber band to seal it up.

Trying to figure out why they use 2 different densities. The outer is for large particles, but the inner more dense filter blocks large particles anyway.

Maybe separating the thin particles from the large helps the filter breath better as it gets used and more dirty. Or maybe a filter that was entirely made up of dense foam would not flow air efficiently enough.

Im not worried about dirt getting in the motor. But i wonder if using no filter oil on the outer filter is too free flowing. Its on a 250 stroke. They sort of need that resistance to keep the pulsating rhythm in balance.

Check out filterskins.

Your filter will clog faster with this dry outer filter, You might as well not use the outer filter, foam filters need oil to trap things, otherwise the dirt and dust will pass right through, so all the dirt you had on the outside of the filter before is now inside the filter. Having the outer filter oiled greatly increases the overall surface area that the filter has available to catch contaminants, and will flow more air for a longer period of time than a dry outer filter.

Right on man. Maybe a filter skin but dont oil it. Outerwears would work better though cause its slicker than the filter skin fabric.

Sand seems to act different than regular dust. It sticks to the filter oil and gets really dirty very fast. Faster than a dusty hardpack trip or the track. But wonder if a dry outer filter just bounces sand away. I should prolly take it apart and see if the sand made it through to the inner filter.

I really had plans to get FFT at gilmore. But one quick ride led into the entire weekend haha. Now i might run it like this at glamis for new years. Need to check out k&n website and score a preFilter.

Like Krusty said Filterskins . They come in 3 packs . oil lightly and then I changed the skins daily .

For future reference, you can use clean motor oil in a pinch. It isn't as tacky as filter oil but works almost as good. Dirt will easily stick to motor oiled foam.

As to the dry outer filter? You got me. I don't think it means your sucking dirt but I don't think it filters as good as a completely oiled filter either.

cant say i agree with your theory...

I would easily sacrifice the .1 horse you add for increased engine protection, especially riding in the back of the pack.

You are probably right it must not filter as well. Took it apart the inside filter looks clean. But then again it always does and still lets out tons of sand with soapy water in the sink after a quick kerosene soak. I had a few squirts of oil i put on the outer filter. YOu can see how caked up it gets where the oil is. The outer filter was dirty on the outside but the inside was clean looking too.

Sky was purdy tonight anyone catch that..?

..........Torx i hear ya man. Engine protection is very important to me. I need to score some keresene from lowes and clean the sucker. Then oil it right. Would like to try the Outerwear idea. Or some stockings like i used to bust on my duel weber VW haha.
