Guys, damn near anything 03 and after will be red stickered, four stroke or not. Very few bikes qualify for the green sticker. Anything 02 and earlier will be green stickered.

Heres what I hear the deal is. It appears the manufacter produce bikes with intent to go to california and therefore get the dreaded c or 9 in the 9th digit of the vin. However, dealers get bikes from all over the place. The bikes on the showroom floor could be either. I bought my YFZ and it was green. I went to look at a LE YFZ this weekend and the according to the vin number it will be red. The DMV doesnt look at what quad it is, they only look at the vin #. SOOOO its a crap shoot.

No, the vin is determined by the emissions testing the bike undergoes. If it passes, as very few do, it gets a green sticker. Most of the companies know the bikes won't pass and don't even try, the result a red sticker. Only affects people in CA so they don't want to spend the cash and try to make them pass. If you notice all the bikes that get the green sticker are way choked down.

When I called the dealer today he said something about a 3 or c in the 8th digit on the VIN, double check, the demand is so high for those bikes you could have gotten one meant for AZ or ?? and it made it to CA. or a DMV mistake, dont freak out, it should be green, my yami is green and the 2 bikes are similar, so it should be green as well, the only difference is that red stickers have limited time use, something like only can be ridden between the months of sept thru april or something like that, as long as you arent riding double with no helmets and whips you should be ok, my warrior had a red sticker when I bought it (out of state bike) the next year the DMV sent me a green so who knows what they are thinking, if they even do

Just register the toys in AZ, get a license plate for them and be done with it! Not that I would do something like that or anything.

I'm sure that doesn't help anyone but, just thought I'd throw that in the mix. And for the record, my Z400 is registered in AZ (for street use too) and has a license plate, AND I also pay the money each year for a green sticker. The (Ca.) DMV told me I didn't have to but I thought it couldn't hurt. I actually don't run the license plate in the dunes so I don't confuse the rangers. Heaven knows what type of ticket they may try to muster up if they saw both the AZ plate AND the Ca Green Sticker.

Both my Yam 450s came in as Green stickers.
The Honda has a 0 in the 8th digit and a 1 in the 9th digit. But the sticker is still RED.

Hi everyone... I live in oregon. In the state of oregon all you need is a Oregon Drivers license and a vin # in order to get an OHV permit. You walk into your local bike dealer, hand them your ID, and give them a vin #, and 2 minutes later they hand you a permit!! The cost for one of these permits is $11. You do not even have to be the registered owner of the bike in order to get a permit!!! When I got the permit for my bike I did not have my ID on me, so a friend of mine did it for me!! I am not telling anyone to break the law in any way, but if you know anyone in oregon.......

If the 8th digit is a Y then it's a green sticker.
If you have a mistake, get an appointment with DMV and get it exchanged.

there was a change in the emission laws that made that happen, not sure of the full story but, I know that some were red stickered under an old emission law, it got changed, so now more bikes are able to get green stickers.

If the 8th digit is a Y then you should have a green sticker. If not, make an appointment at the DMV and get it corrected.

I'm still pretty sure the bike has to be a compliant bike to get a green sticker. Some bikes were not produced to be sold in CA and are not legal to own and register here. I would be wary about telling the DMV they screwed up. If the bike was never meant to be in CA they could end up really screwing you. I would check with the Honda, or Yamaha and see if they had the bike certified for a green sticker before I went in and pissed of the Civil Servants. Just my .02

According to my dealer, it is supposed to be Green and they will do whatever to correct it, I have to bring the paperwork to them today. They also said Honda only has one version of the 450, so there isn't a special one for CA - according to the dealer.
Will post as I find out more info.

I bought an XR100 off a guy here in NV, and tried to register it in CA the other day. The damn lady was pissing me off. "Nooo, it's out of state! Nooo, it's a motorcycle! Nooo, it's offroad! Nooo, I have to verify the VIN! I have to go outside!!! You better know where the VIN and engine numbers are!" goddamn civil servants. so freaking lame. At least she got me a green...
