i live near richmond va and im driving my f 350 with a 20 ft trailor and 6 atvs and 2 dirt bikes all the way to glamis to ride in the best looking dunes in the country. ive never been before and have only seen videos on youtube but it looks awsome. i need to know everything i need to bring and do to prep for this trip i dont want to get there and find out i cant ride my quads. all the bikes and atvs im bringing are motorcross race bikes and i dont know what californias rules on race fuels and exaust systems are. i also need to know were i can stay are there hotels around or am i camping in my trailor or a tent. and are there public showers near by and places to eat. thanks for any help i hope i didnt leave anything out looking foward to seeing all yall out there soon
ONE-A-DAY
Wow, Virginia, thats hard core. No issues with what fuel you burn. When you get there you can buy a non-resident sticker for your bikes, and camping pass for the week. From there its just find a nice spot and set up camp. The only showers are at the Glamis Beach Store.
evile1003
how much is that non resident sticker, do i need to bring a hundred gallons of race fuel with me or do any local shops cell vp c12 if so about how much does it run.. and im assuming i wont have problems with my exaust on my bikes there all aftermarket ... loudest one is 104 db's and no spark arrestors for 2 of them.
mike g
We sell C12,$65 for a 5 gallon can, its a little cheaper in town if you put it in your own can. You could run into a little trouble with the bikes with no spark arestors. The nearest town is Brawley,30 miles, they have rooms there.
evile1003
so in other words i should buy a pipe with a spark arrestor.... wich is all good because im sure ill have to reprogram my efi on my kfx 450 when i get there anyways. awsome on the rooms i cant wait to come im heading that way in july it cant come soon enough ive wanted to go to glamis all my life now. better be all i expect it to be and maybe more its gunna cost about 8,000:))) stopping in vegas on the way back:))
mike g
Good news and bad news. Good news, you will have the dunes to your self in July. Bad news, 112-118 degress in the day(135-145 on the sand) but it does cool off at night 95 -110.

You won't have to worry about a spark arrestor in July as there will be no LEO's out there, way too hot. It is the season right now and through pretty much April, which starts to get warm. Not too many people brave the dunes in mid summer, it is VERY hot and for someone who is inexperienced in the dunes I would strongly discourage you doing so. Not trying to rain on your parade, but you should definitely plan your trip earlier in the year (later in the season for us).
evile1003
i would be happy to change it i havnt set anything in stone yet so you guys till me the best time to head out there and that when ill come.. i just know im going to be at the dunes for 4 days if its goin to be over 100 im not interested in coming that time of year. i will say that i know i cant come for the next couple months so will it be better for me to come next year... this is prolly a once in a lifetime thing cant just pack up and drive 3000 miles every year so i want to have a good time on this trip:)

Life has taken me to many different parts of the U.S., but I've always been able to find my way back to Glamis. Its worth the drive. If you know that you are not going to be able to make it this season, you need to just plan on next season. Having lived not far from the dunes, it is not a fun place to be in the summer. The heat kills many each year.
ONE-A-DAY
Its less than a 100 in July............just after midnight.
AZSandAddict
don't worry about the spark arrestors. do not come in July. you need to come now. or wait till after summer. nobody goes there in the summer unless you want to fry.

10-4 there. Good time is usually Halloween to Easter. Some people go a little earlier and later depending on the Heat

Thanksgiving and Presidents weekends are usually the busiest times. In the past when the economy was nicer, you'd see over 100,000 people on those weekends. Most weekends between the above dates have a fair amount of people, but if I was making that haul, I would want to see it at its best....or worst...depending on what you like to see. The only downside as far as riding on those weekends is how rough the dunes get with that many people riding around. As long as you ride away from the major hangouts you usually dont get too close to people. There something like 60,000 acres to ride in between the North and South Ends.

The nearest town is about a half hour away with full amenities. Bike shops etc will sell C-15, there's at least 2. Hotels and food all over the place in town. On the busier weekends you can get munchies in Glamis in the vendor area and maybe even C-15...I think.

If you are dead set on the Summer, then my advise to you is watch the threads in the summer. There's usually a group of die-hards who go on full moon weekends. They ride at dusk, dawn and night when its cooler, but unless you are a good rider in the sand, I wouldn't make my first time there at night. Its pretty technical your first time.

Don't waste your time with the spark arrestors. Nobody is going to stop you for that. Just make sure you have a whip....that's a ticket for sure.

In the end...you seriously need to do it....there is nothing like it. The videos you see do not come close to telling the full story.

best time to go to Glamis is from sept. The weather is nice and warm during the day and cool at night but the winds can sometimes be a bit on the high side. Season ends around april and its warm again. I would not worry to much on the spark arrestor. Leos are not normally looking for them unless you are effing up and get pulled over for some dumb arss stuff. If you want to see all the crazy stuff go on a big weekend (ie. halloween, thanksgiving, new years, presidents weekend). You want to see the top $$$ stuff stay on Gecko road. I camp there just so I can droll over all the nice cars and there are outhouses all over the place. Bring plenty of Firewood, beer and foot. I would camp there vs going into town and staying in a hotel. the town is a little on the run down and have heard of peoples stuff getting broken into during the night and Hell part of the fun about Mother G is nightfall. The camp fire, beer, music and stars. You can get race gas in own at some of the gas station.
ces63ss
oh yeah, bring the camera. Take plenty of pictures for all the great memories.

trust me your first ride in glamis will be the ride of your lifetime!!. but make sure you hook up with someone that knows the place first before going out. not knowing the place can get you very hurt or worse, so be careful. as you have never been to glamis pic a weekend that is some what busy. if you go the week of thanksgiving you can be there all week with a good group (rec. planing and watching on here for people to camp and ride with). then its not really busy till after T-day. then you can also see all the high end cars and all the crazy stuff that goes on and still get some good dune rides in with out the dunes all torn up before T-day.

plan it like that and you will have a great time trust me.

evile1003
thanks for all the info guys im thinkin the best time for me to go would be this comming christmas week. will anybody be there on christmas day.... i think it would be bored if it were just me and my friends and nobody else.. of course im going to drive around and learn the area first like i said i race motorcross... never go out and jump everything the first lap on your sure to get messed up... unless your travis pastrana or james stuart. im most definatly bringing cameras with me i dont have alot of money and the economys not helping so this could be the only time i come with my own bikes. whats the temp average in dec im sure its not teens and 20's like it is here but how cold does it get.. i asume by what taco means by whip is the flag.... can i buy one there or do i have to buy one online we dont have them here and the only sand we have to ride in nc doesnt require one. just want yall to know im way more excited about going to glamis than stoping in vegas on the way back thats why glamis is getting 4 days and vegas is getting 3:)
evile1003
if it were up to me id stay in glamis for 6 days and vegas one... but the female already doesnt really want to play in the sand that wouldnt go over good:)

If you want to make the most of your trip, bring enough of everything you will need, for the entire four days. (Gas, food, water...etc.) Time in Glamis is prescious, you wont want to waste it travelling to town for supplies. The temps during the day around christmas is usually anywhere between 65 and 75, and gets down to the high 20's to mid 30's at night. There were people in glamis on christmas, and probably started getting crowded the day after, until new years. There are portable bathrooms, and showers at the Glamis Beach Store (you have to pay for them) Have fun, and be safe!

X-Mas week is good as well as Thanksgiving Week . For a first timer I would recomend the Thanksgiving just so you can experiance the crazy's at least once. Also if you ride MX and make the trip all the way across country I think I would have to make a side trip for the day to Glen Helen.
Thanksgiving might be better also so you have at least a bette chance of getting better weather across the country would suck to spend a extra 2-3 on the roads because of a blizzard.

Summer Time . . . . . Were living is easy. 1dude.gif

heres the deal ive talked this over with all my friends and most have plans for this thanksgiving so we will be in town nov 21st through nov 25th 2011. so far i have 16 people that are definately on board i think that number is goin to grow. i look foward to seeing all of you and i will be posting a message on this bored when im comming so i expect to see everyone out there. thanks glamis people rock headbang.gif headbang.gif since i have to wait almost 2 yrs is there any cheap way to build a sand rail. im a technician so you can use big automotive words
mynameislos
If your looking to go cheap for a sandrail, VW powered is the way to go. I dont know if I would have the patience to wait 2 years lol. Theres quite a bit going on even on off weekends. Any big holiday would be a good one you dont have to wait for a thanksgiving specifically. halloween, thanksgiving, new years, presidents weekend.

If you're coming for the over the top party scene, come during a holiday. If you're coming for amazing dunes, come on an off week. There will still be plenty of people around. Glamis during holidays gives me anxiety. Way too many people along it's fringes.

i suggest you call one of the local rv trailer rental shops and rent a trailer for the days you are out there they will deliver and set it up for you and haul it away for you when you leave, then you can go into town and buy food. then if you need it there are services that come to your camp site and pump the tanks and give you more water for a fee. but do it early to ensure a rental

How much are these?

And I assume "when you get there you can buy a sticker" means these can be bought at the ranger station.

Id hit up Idaho. Glamis is cool, but Idaho has the BEST pure riding dunes..
AZAMG
Glamis is a must see for people watching and the overall experience. +1 on the trailer rental...you will have waaay more fun staying in the dunes vs packing up every night and heading into town.... I would recommend camp n' style for the trailer rental...nice people and like someone already mentioned, they will deliver the trailer and pick it up when you are done...doesn't get much better than that. Then you have showers/kitchen/crapper/ect. You can even have it pumped and watered....every few days if needed.

If you want to head to Vegas, you can hit Dumont Dunes and if you go further north St Anthony's in Idaho is the biggest and baddest dunes I have ever seen. Not nearly as much of a scene, but BIG dunes!

You will get pulled over in Glamis if you don't have a flag...IMO the best way to mount a flag on a dirt bike is about 6 inches behind your seat...drill a hole through your fender and use large fender washers and a whip mount. Oh yeah, if you go this route you will want to shorten the flag as well...I think they are supposed to be 8 feet overall. Also...no glass containers and bring lots of firewood and food. If you are on bikes/quads bring Camelback's and I would also suggest desert tanks if you don't want to stress on gas. The Glamis store has quite a bit of food and supplies but IMO is a bit overpriced. Try to bring everything you will need. Blythe is your last town of any size before you get there.
You may also want to take a morning run down sand highway to Gordon's....fun fast ride (approx 20 mi give or take each way) and there is a store / restaurant & bar you can eat / drink at before the ride back. You could hit Patton mid day on the way back and don't forget the sand drags in the eve before sunset...a must see for first timers.
Have fun-
