I bought my boy a Raptor 80 and it does not do very well in the sand. Craps out like its hitting the rev limiter, but we have removed all the limiters. Its been to the dealer a few times because the stator died and it wasnt running well just bogs down. Dealer replaced the muffler and charged me $120 for a valve adjustment. This bike is brand new and has only been to the dunes 3 times!
What does everybody elses kid ride in the dunes? Please keep in mind hes not going to race the hill, Id just like him to be able to go on runs through the smaller stuff without getting stuck on every little ant hill. He is about 100 lbs by the way and a new rider, so Im not really comfortable putting him on a larger bike.
Thanks for your suggestions!

The Honda 250X might be a good bike for him. 250 4 stroke so it's not gonna be amazing speed. But it's fast enough to dune and play around with.

Raptor 80s are crap. my bud got one for his kid and all it does is run on the limiter. We asked yamanaha about this and they said yup thats what it does. I had sold him a Honda 90 last year ( he has 2 young ones) and it still runs great. The only reason I sold it was my youngest one was ready to move up!
Get rid of the Yamanaha and get a Honda 90!!
Good luck

I would steer anyone clear of the predator 90's. They run great so far and have plenty of power. Both 90's that my best friend and his brother bought for their kids have several brackets that have broken though and they now rattle like paint cans. The bikes were purchased for Christmas and have been to the dunes three times.

If the kid is 100lbs I'd stay away from anything in the double digits. Not sure what other sizes are made but I'd definitely be looking at the bigger (physically) bikes. I don't think you could go wrong with the 250EX. I think a Blaster would also be good except it might be a little too much with the 2 stroke power band.
Check on the 250 4 strokes. Should work out great.

The Honda 90 is a pretty good bike!! (It dunes pretty good, and is pretty sturdy can beat the Crap outta it and it still runs good) only thing I think it is a Pull Start.
Once he gets the hang of it though then gunna be to small I think Just my 2 cents.

I say get him a 70. If he can master a 70, you won't really have to worry about him later on.
Whatever you do, don't get him a Crf50.

I used to ride this in the little dunes when I was a kid...
Never once did I hurt myself on it... okay... once

For someone that's 100 lbs I would look at something like a Yamaha breeze. In the sand it's all about speed and momentum when taking on any size hill, the little double digit bike just don't have it.

I still think the 250ex is the best bet, or the z-250 same as the 250ex

Ditto what ShockMaster said, when my son outgrows his LT80 (It runs in the sand awsome by the way) we will go with the Z250, I think it is a better bike than the 250EX. I took one look at the front no-suspension of the Raptor 80 and knew it was not the bike for us.

What age is the kid? My son is 100 lbs, but he is only 7, he is about 4 1/2 ft tall also. Just a big kid all the way around.
He rides an lt80, still with the exhaust restriction in place, it runs great in the sand on the smaller stuff. I just run the stock tires for now, and it seems to do fine. He only gets stuck when he stops at the bottom of a hill. Otherwise he does fine with it.
When he is ready to move up it will be a z250 or 250ex, not sure which yet and hopefully I have some time still.

My son has a Dinli 90 which is the same as a Kasea 90.
It is stock with paddles and he rides it in the small dunes all the time. He is 8 and weighs almost 100lbs. and is about 41/2 ft. tall.
The bike is very dependable and has stayed together well also.
There is a place in Az. that sells them and makes hop up parts also.
Eastside motorsports in Mesa Az.
His next bike will probably be a 300 ex or something similar, since he is growing so fast.
