Mendeola, or anyone else that has done this,

I need to reverse my 2D. It was in a rear engine car and now it’s going in a mid engine. I understand that I need to reverse the ring and pinion, is that all? I also understand that I need to set the bronze set screw on the other side. What is the trick to setting the depth correctly?

Thanks in advance...

You need to swap the ring & pinion to the other side, check the back lash for the R &P, and re-set the load bolt.
This may take removing the shims under the differential carrier bearing races which are in the side covers. the load bolt goes in till it touches and back a half turn.
You are welcome to call me and I will walk you through it.

Thanks for the quick response, How much backlash should there be?

Thanks, I’ll be in touch if I run into problems...

Also, thanks for your contingency support in the VORRA series. I won $600 from you guys this last season. And it is one of the main reason I am staying with Mendeola... thumb.gif

Thank you this year will be the same contingency support.

I'm to the point where i need to move some shims from one cover to the other so that i can get the backlash right. I need to remove the outer races and i think there might be a tool or a trick to it. Anyone know?

yes, to remove the races this will take some heat.
1. remove drive stubs this makes it easier to work on.
2.try flipping the side covers to opposite sides.
3. if this doesnt work get a torch*, or oven* warm the side cover in the area that is opposite the brg. race till spit hot.(like you would test a clothes iron)
4. once hot with heat proof gloves grab the side cover and smack against table to dislodge brg race.
or use a flat head screw driver go side to side under the brg. race in grove made in side cover
* torch neutral oxy / accetaline flame or with the oven ask the wife it may smell up the house so clean as much as posible & place on a cookie sheet. set to 350 deg. for 2 min. and test with spit. every oven is different.
I dont want a call from some wife how I told there husband to use the oven plese ask first-dont use microwave
disclaimer is over

That’s the story of my life, tearing into uncharted territory… The tans looks good. Remember, I put a new ring and pinion in it less than a year ago, so I didn’t expect it to look too bad. The bender is working out great! Thanks for helping me out with that!

So, I went ahead and put it together without changing the shims. It is hard to tell the actual backlash, because the pinion moves fairly easy. It seemed to have plenty of backlash as I has tightening up the side covers. I had the ring side side cover tight and the opposite side cover all but about .005 tight and I had about .015 backlash. Then I tightened it the rest of the way and it’s just hard to tell what I got. I can grab both stub shafts and turn the gears, so I think it’s not too tight, but I just don’t feel comfortable.

Is it typical that a guy would have to change the shims? Or are these boxes machined to a tight enough tolerance as to eliminate this action?

Can you7 tell me the relationship of the shim size to backlash distance? Would .005 shim move the backlash out .003, for example?

put the box in 3rd gear and feel the lash rotate 90 deg. and check again look for tight spots by rolling r & p all the way through.
it is typical to have to move shims. a .005 will move .005 if possible use a dial indicator
Sick Dayz
Cool, i'll get back into it this afternoon.
Sick Dayz
OK, I pulled the back plate off, so I could see the ring and pinion. I put it in third gear. Not sure that helped at all, the pinion still moves very easy.

I put the dial indicator on and had the wife keep an eye on the numbers as I moved the ring back and forth. We came up with an average movement of .005 in any position. I’m going to run it. I feel a little better about the numbers now. I didn't have to move any of the shims. Thanks for your help!

I'm glad you posted this info. I'll be doing the same thing to my 2d very soon so it can go a mid engine car. Thanks.
