I'm to the point where i need to move some shims from one cover to the other so that i can get the backlash right. I need to remove the outer races and i think there might be a tool or a trick to it. Anyone know?
Nice show of Balls to tear into the uncharted territory of the MYTHICAL TRANSAXLE. How did that beast look inside after thrashing on it for 2 seasons?????? Hows the bender????? Joe
That’s the story of my life, tearing into uncharted territory… The tans looks good. Remember, I put a new ring and pinion in it less than a year ago, so I didn’t expect it to look too bad. The bender is working out great! Thanks for helping me out with that!

yes, to remove the races this will take some heat.
1. remove drive stubs this makes it easier to work on.
2.try flipping the side covers to opposite sides.
3. if this doesnt work get a torch*, or oven* warm the side cover in the area that is opposite the brg. race till spit hot.(like you would test a clothes iron)
4. once hot with heat proof gloves grab the side cover and smack against table to dislodge brg race.
or use a flat head screw driver go side to side under the brg. race in grove made in side cover
* torch neutral oxy / accetaline flame or with the oven ask the wife it may smell up the house so clean as much as posible & place on a cookie sheet. set to 350 deg. for 2 min. and test with spit. every oven is different.
I dont want a call from some wife how I told there husband to use the oven plese ask first-dont use microwave
disclaimer is over So, I went ahead and put it together without changing the shims. It is hard to tell the actual backlash, because the pinion moves fairly easy. It seemed to have plenty of backlash as I has tightening up the side covers. I had the ring side side cover tight and the opposite side cover all but about .005 tight and I had about .015 backlash. Then I tightened it the rest of the way and it’s just hard to tell what I got. I can grab both stub shafts and turn the gears, so I think it’s not too tight, but I just don’t feel comfortable.
Is it typical that a guy would have to change the shims? Or are these boxes machined to a tight enough tolerance as to eliminate this action?
Can you7 tell me the relationship of the shim size to backlash distance? Would .005 shim move the backlash out .003, for example?
