So I just found out that my good friend that was camping with us on New Years got a ticket WHILE LEAVING GLAMIS on Sunday about 3:00 PM. Maybe they just figured there running out of people to give tickets to, since the weekend was over?????????

Ready for this crap........ He was driving down the new Wash road right by wash 1 or 2 (where ever the BLM check point is) heading to the main highway, PULLING his Brand New Enclosed trailer (first trip) and a BLM officer told him to stop and pull over to the side.

He gave him a ticket for NO FRONT LICENSE PLATE !

His truck is a 2004 Lifted 2500GMC crew cab.

Our other friend in camp got a ticket for having rear passengers in his rhino (in seats and wearing seatbelts) even though the driver and Front Passenger weren't wearing seatbelts (no tickets for that).
So the driver got a ticket for " UNSAFE CARGO" WTF ??

Was the truck registered in AZ?

Not only that, but who really gives a rats arse that someone got a ticket for no front plate! The law requires it, if you don't want to run one, then you take the "CHANCE" that you might get a ticket for it. BFD
Double G
I would have an issue about the front plates if it were an AZ registered truck (they only give us 1 plate for the back). If it's a CA truck then no mercy from me, they require 2 plates...

BLM does traffic stops?

I can understand the Sheriff, but BLM?
richard cheese
no front plate in CA is treated like front tint.....they can get you for that if they want....

I agree with the unsafe cargo...the MFG's of sxs's strongly recommend no one sitting in the rear, i think we should follow that

That's what makes me not go back, i can get those tickets in the city!
mellen_mpz
I had an LEO on Gecko Rd look at the lack of front plate on my truck. She held her hand up and said "STOP YOUR VEHICLE" (I was passing the permit checkpoint), walked around back and saw that I'm from AZ. It was funny because you could tell she was mad cuz she couldnt give me a ticket. Why do these people get off on giving tickets? Is it really that big of a "high five" moment for them? Do they go back and brag to their friends about how many peoples day they ruined? What gives??? Who is hiring these people???

What was the Ranger's reason for stopping you? If I get pulled (really for any reason) but especially if I'm not aware of any violations that had occurred, thats the first question even before the officer gets a chance to "greet you professionally". I'd be very curious what the PC was for the stop.

What was your cite for? Was it something that could have been noted by the officer prior to the stop? (like a taillight out) Or was it something that the officer had to see up close in order to cite you for? (i.e. open container in a cup holder)

you can get away with it if your car or truck doesnt have factory license brackets or it takes away from the value of the vehicle (only on classic cars)

BLM is like the ATF. They have more Juice than anyone else. They have full federal backing. If you throw a cigarette on the ground on BLM property, they can impound your car and trailer and you don't get them back. I found this out the hard way when they nailed me last year for pouring a little gas on a Christmas tree to get the thing lit. $125. The real Bit@h of it all was they just sat in the dark and waited until the crime was committed and then rolled into our camp like FBI on Jeffrey Daumer's trailer. Bottom line is that our goverment believes it is a privilage they allow up to use this land so it is on there terms we get to use it. They are the law and can do as they please, it just seams like in Glamis they hire only BLM officers that where never liked much as kids, no what I meam...

Tow-In permits aren't required, they're recommended. What is the section he cited you for?

I hear of people being stopped for no apparent reason every time I go out there... if they are truly stopping people without PC then they WILL NOT stop until people start questioning them as to their probable cause.

So I'm trying to figure this out...

They'll impound your car and trailer if you throw a cigarette on the ground, and you found this out because you got a 125 dollar fine for lighting a tree with some gas?

knowing I was already goingto be nailed I played cool with the officer, we engaged in a conversation and he explained that the BLM has full authority and he recommended that I read all the laws and regulations of Use of Public Lands. It is easier to read and understand a chemistry book and I can't even spell it. I forgot to mention, my tree lighting ceramony gave them full reign to to write a ticket to onther freind in our camp holding a Glass bottle beer $125, three more for no current reg papers on their quads even though they had papers in the trailer, still it wasnt on the quads. I now, along with having the green stickers present, I keep a copy of all reg in a ziplock taped under each seat. And lastly, they gave a ticket to another friend for littering because the trash can he had by his trailer had fallen over and there where a couple of items that fell out. All in All they left our came issuing a total of 6 tickets for over $500. yeap, dont F with the BLM they will pull the book out on you and you wont win. We want to play there, its on their terms.

Over New Years got caught lighting off a fireworks (actually the first one of the night as a teaser for the kids) well as soon as I light it off and the kids get all excited I pick up the launcher off the ground with the lighter still in my hand and turn around to go back to the trailer and here comes 2 BLM/LEO and I just start laughing and say to them "you so caught me" well the male officer was actually really cool about everything and I think he would have let me go with just taking the rest of the fireworks but the female officer was a real ball buster and demanded my license and has to say "you're gettin a ticket" I tell her no problem you caught me etc. and the male officer kind of looks at me and rolls his eyes about his partners attitude. So to make a long story short $125.00 ticket and a box of mortars takin but they didn't bother to look in the big red bag right in front of them with all the rest of the fireworks in it........

FYI: the one officer mentioned that if it had been the Sheriff that he could of sited me with a $1,000 hazardous removal fee......ouch!

If you received this citation crossing the I-8 bridge or in the dunes please fill out the ASA LEO contact questionnaire using the following link.

Link to ASA LEO Contact form

The “towed-in” permit is really only to allow passage over the I-8 bridge for vehicles that have been towed in and are operated in the dunes. This permit is to allow a towed in vehicle to reenter the recreation area from the other side of the recreation area and does not permit the travel on any roads other than the bridge connecting the area south of I-8 with the area north of I-8. Any vehicle that is towed in and then used on the road needs to have a valid Special Recreation Permit the same as any other street licensed vehicle. If this citation was issued for crossing I-8 and returning to the dunes than it was issued in error.

Looks like your going to have to have a judge figure this out and you are going to remember that they are going to ask you to drive out to probaly ElCentro on a weekday meaning missing a day of work and they might end up rescheduling because you actuly showed up meaning another day off work. You might win and they are wrong but you will loose in the long run.

I hate to burst your bubble...

But if:

  1. you towed it in
  2. and you were on wash road, the 78 or on gecko

Your blazer just became a primary vehicle and must have a pass displayed as no OHV's are allowed on wash road.

you're not gonna win this one based on what you're sayin.

When a street legal vehicle is towed into the ISDRA, the owner can ask either BLM or the fee permit staff for a "Towed in" permit at no cost. Here are the conditions:

1. Must be issued upon entry to prove the vehicle is indeed towed in.

2. Available free of charge from either the Cahuilla or Buttercup Ranger Stations, as well as from the fee permit staff.

3. Allows the vehicle to be driven off-highway in the ISDRA.

4. Allows the vehicle to be driven across the Herman Schneider Memorial Bridge/Dune Buggy Flats fee checkpoint.

5. Does not allow the vehicle to be driven on any of the other access roads, or through any other fee check points, without a weekly or seasonal permit.

6. Does not allow the vehicle to exit and then re-enter the recreation area without a weekly or seasonal permit.

Best overall advice when obtaining a "Towed in" permit: Keep it in the sand!

i checked my ticket and its 75.00 bucks i have to pay but its weird its supposed to be sent to the "central violations bureau" in north carolina, the offense description the leo put down "no use fee permit" ................. um I PAID 90 BUCKS FOR A SEASON PASS! so wtf if i call this place and try to explain my situation will they even know what the fk glamis or a season permit is??????????

If this citation was issued for crossing I-8 and returning to the dunes than it was issued in error.

i was pulled over on wash road by wash 1, i was only using my truck in the dunes , thank you for the link

Unfortunately for you the new wash road has been designated for street licensed vehicles only and as such any street licensed vehicle using this road requires a valid Special Recreation Permit (SRP).

As I said in my previous note the towed in permit only applies to the I-8 over crossing so your citation should have been for not having a valid SRP if you were on the new wash road.

Currently every street licensed vehicle not in the dunes requires an SRP whenever they are on a road in the ISDRA that has been designated for street licensed vehicles only

I hate to burst your bubble...
But if:

  1. you towed it in
  2. and you were on wash road, the 78 or on gecko

Your blazer just became a primary vehicle and must have a pass displayed as no OHV's are allowed on wash road.

you're not gonna win this one based on what you're sayin.

aw chit that makes sense....... fk man so if i want to use my truck on the road and in the dunes i have to buy another permit cuz the tow in permit is only valid off road? man this is some lame chit.......

Or stay off the roads... But either one would keep you legal.

I'd rather get contacted for a citation, violation than get shot at with Pepper Balls and then try to deny it happened,........oh, that never happens in G.......RIIGHT

As I've posted, if you're stuff is squared away, demand a supervisor and have a micro audio cassette recorder handy with your spouse, significant other to record the contact. They can't order you to stop recording as there is no officer safety issue with a micro audio recorder as they could claim with a video recorder.

It's time to keep these fed. agents in check with what is legal/reasonable in Ca. Many of them come from other states during holiday weekends and are doing things that are not legal in Ca., but may be where they normally work.

I actually had a run in with a LEO at Gecko loop this weekend and he was REALLY COOL! It was about 11:00 PM and we had our music kind of loud but we were just by the fire. As soon as the Ranger pulled up I kindly greeted him and he asked if we could turn the music down and no matter how stupid it was he had to stick to the noise ordinance due to a complaint. I turned it down, thanked him and pointed him over to some A$$ dumping black water. He thanked us and was on his way. This guy must have actually had friends growing up because he didnt have an attitude at all.

why are these type of storys always about a friend?

Because GD.com'ers know how to follow rules more so than the general attendance.

These 'petty' appearance tickets do always seem to happen to the other guy, or a friend of a friend.

Honestly, even when I deserved a ticket (and didnt get it), all of my interaction with the BLM LEO's has been positive.

On Gecko, New Years, I asked a LEO if I was ok away from the road (at 8ft from the edge) he said, "Oh yeah you are good... look at everyone else". I replied smiling " I dont care about anyone else's ticket officer, I want to know if I am good." He just gave the thumbs up as he drove on.

Good point.

While some of the LEO's may follow the "Zero Tolerance" mantra.

I know of some that take attitude in to account. Be respectful, get a warning.
Be a jerk, get a ticket.
when the story is about a friend, or a friend of a friend, we have no way to find out about the attitude.

Got a question for you guys since it seems we have a lot of know it alls here smile.gif
I usually drive my street truck down to watch the drags because I don't ever air down and it's much faster from the wash roads.
When I came back I get on the main highway but here's my question. I have a GREEN LED Live Wire whip on my truck and I was wondering if I would get a ticket for having this whip light on while driving on the high way??
Headinjury
I just dont get it. Ive been going to the ISDRA since 1999 and I have never been hasseled by any LEO what so ever. It is all about attitude. I did get a ticket one time on Gecko Loop for riding an ATC 70 without a helmet. It was $25. That was about 5 years ago.

Yes, the vehicle code allows for only red or amber light to the rear of the vehicle and only white or amber to the front. So if you are on the highway, it is a legitamate stop and cite.

Was the truck registered in AZ?

The truck is a CA licensed truck and YES it is against the law to not have a front plate. Actually my "Friend" was not upset about it. He flat out told me "well it is against the law and I'm not pissed, just real suprised that they would write him up for it in the desert"" He just lost his front plate during his move into a new home and never bothered ordering another one.
I guess he will now.

I know this friend for 16 years now and he's also a co-worker, I know for a FACT that this guy wouldn't give attitude to the cops. It was just him, his wife and there 14 month old baby girl in the truck.

Kind of had a feeling it would be a ticket waiting to happen. Guess I'll make sure to unplug it before the drive on the highway.
Wonder if that would be the same going down the new wash road??

Funny thing about posts like this...

...all the leo's sit in there little offices and jerk-off to them!

Nothing gets them more excited.

Ever since we invited them to save us from ourselves, and they did. Now 99% of the "element" is long gone, so the only thing left are the sheep.

We are the sheep. Yes, even the do-gooders are sheep.

My understanding as it was explained to me by a Ranger, is that every street legal vehicle, that is used in the dunes (like jeeps / baja bugs) exclusively requires this tow in permit in order to avoid paying for an additional seasonal permit. It doesn't matter if it crosses a bridge. If they come into your camp to check passes and your street legal jeep that you towed in doesn't have a tow permit, or pass, you can be cited. They almost cited my parents for their street legal jeep that was just unloaded from their toyhauler for not having a seasonal pass.
