Nice golf cart, but I rode one with a stock seat and it sucked so bad I was walking funny.(yes it was the seat) Other than that it is a very nice bike.

Well i have about 5 hours on it now and alls well, and the power is unbelievable. I haven't really cracked it wide open, the manuel says 2-3 seconds of full throttle is ok, but i've givin her little bursts. WOW!!!
As for the seat....i haven't riden "faithfully" for about 3 years now and my butt is just fine. I'm gonna give 10 hours of sticking to the "break-in" then thats it...oil change and it's go time
The header glowing red saterday night freaked me out a little so i'm gonna bump the jet up to a 45 (as per advice from Raptorgirl i rode with yesterday) She says with everything stock it actually makes a big difference.
5 more hours of break in and hopefully the pipe, that's on back order, will be in and i can put that on.

I orders GYT-R al pipe....
Everything is stock right now, haven't touched a thing. It's the header pipe that's glowing red hot. About 8" of it, it stops right around the rad hose. Shannon (raptorgirl) has a YFZ and says hers did it and still does it....suppos to be normal.

From my understanding Shovel, YFZ engines from brand new are very tight. Therefore they build up alot of heat. As per the dealer and a few people i have spoke to...this is normal. For every punch of the throttle you're to slow down and let the engine dispurse it's heat build up. Riding now for 5 hours i have noticed things loosen up and she's running alittle better. Still a slight noise coming from the engine area when i'm cruising at low rpms that's still bugging me a bit, but it's all good!!
Shovel, have you bought the YFZ yet???

To sum it all up.....i didn't spend 10K buying one of these things without doing my research first. As you can see, i'm not worried about it letting me down or being a big headache maintaining.

so people say its just normal, BTW, OMG ITS A BEAUTY!, it doesnt burn your leg, or get REALLY hot down their...its just like wat the pipe is made out of??? hmmmm??? would a aftermarket pipe do the same thing?
Bronc-O-Boy11
Apr 5 2004, 11:31 AM
Nothing too hot, mind you it's still only +5 here.
I guess it's just what the pipe is made of and it's jetted lean from the factory.
I'm not sure about the aftermarket pipe yet as it's on back order from GYT-R.

A few things to help out with here. The glowing red headpipe is normal, and will do it no matter what pipe, jetting combo you have on it. It is just a characteristic of these engines. The yz guys have been talking about it for years. It is more noticable when at idle, or when stock. As you jet it richer, it will not glow as much, but it will always do it to some extent. I have had jets in my bike from the stock main (152) all the way up to 180 so far. It glows red with all of them. As for the 45 jet she is talking about, that is your pilot jet. Stock is a 42. Most people go to a 45, or 48. I wouldn't do that until you have done some mods though. If you pull the baffle out of the stock pipe, and the airbox lid off, you will gain a decent amount of power, and then you should rejet. I would start at a 45 pilot, and 165 main with that. Also, you should pick up a yz dirtbike needle for the carb. It is called the NCVQ needle. Go to the dealer and get that, so when you start jetting, you can throw it in. Keep in mind, you need to be 2 slots down with the clip when you compar that needle to the stock one. So, if someone tells you to go 5th clip on the stock needle, you will want to be at the 3rd clip on the NCVQ. If I have confused you, or you have any questions, ask away. My e-mail is listed here, and you are more than welcome to PM me anytime. I have played with my bike quite a bit since getting it last december. And, lastly, congrats on the new bike, you will love it.

Here's more info on the headpipe. It is COMPLETELY normal as previously mentioned. It is not due to the engine design, however. It is because the pipe is made from stainless. Here's just a quick list of bikes that do it: TRX400EX, TRX450R, YFZ450, XR400, XR250, TRX250EX, etc. You can affect it slightly with jetting but you're wasting your time if all you're trying to do is stop the pipe from glowing. Just ride it. It's NORMAL!!
